Sports fans of the world...uh, unite?

  1. Know ThySelf...I once struck out the first 9 batters on 28 pitches...they didn’t like me. I once struck out 4 times at bat...my team didn’t like me. I was told to know god...I said I don’t relate to the word god. A man said we have too many words and not enough sentences...he wore 6 pair of underbriefs, spoke 6 languages and was almost completely silent. The american pastime has always been hatred...have you driven a ford lately? Music for today...’fur Alina’ Arvo Part

  2. This is not related to Joe’s post or to any issues in the article. Just have a small story to tell.

I was stopping by my old school , where I managed for three years here, to get out of the hosue and stretch out my neck. My neck has been injured and needs exercise but not too hard and low impact.

So, I got up into the teachers room and I saw twofriends of mine who teach there who are also American. They tell me they are missing a fourth person for a two on two game of touch football in th park after their last class.

So, we went up there and threw some warm up passes and I felt pretty good. So we played a friendly game. About ten minutes in I caught a 40 yard pass (pretty much the whole legth of the playing area) over my shoulder at full run to score.

I’ve just come of 6 weeks of being practically immobilised. I’m f**king elated.

And what’s more it’s a friendly game so even the guys of the other duo congratulate you if you pull something good.

  3. I understand this is totally off topic and I apologize for that:

So the lesson of the past horrendous tragedies is what then?

  4. TO: Helga in Daylesford if you pop in today:

Wonderful radio interview link yesterday, a gem.

I adored what Vonnegut said about recognizing when one is happy:  “If this isn’t nice I don’t know what is.”

Or his comments about libraries, music and telephones.  And I agree with what he said about Karl Marx and why he is was a socialist… and about gratitude.

Or his laughter about Ned Kelly’s dying words.

    “Such is life.”

So long as millions of people still love Kurt Vonnegut and people like him I have hope that humanity can survive…

  5. Hello Expendables...from a rainy, rainy Astoria.

Nice mix of comments today but I thinking maybe the Germans are planning to invade America in the name of spreading democracy.

  6. Along the lines of racism...I watched a brilliant film last night called ‘The Tracker’. A good companion flick to ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’.
Helga, I too very much enjoyed listening to Kurt Vonnegut this morning.  Thank you.
Andy, I dont know what happened to immobilize you, but I am glad ‘you are back in the game’ and getting around again.
I have never owned a cell-phone but here is one more reason to get rid of them all together:

Have a grand day where ever you are folks.

  7. Hi Frances. I know Michael from Scotland loves Rabbit Proof Fence. If we ever get a DVD player, I’ll check it out.

And that cell phone link is crucial. I’ve long railed against all this extra electromagnetic radiation. I will be using that link again and again. Thanks.

  8. The techno crats are probably designing remote control pollinators even as we speak.  Anything not to have change or make ‘sacrifices’.
    AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a very good black and white photo/audio essay on Guantanamo:

It’s about ALL WARS, get it?

BTW, MZ, JOS-- any idea about next week?

  10. It’s a full day of news & comments at CO. Jackie Robinson, chess, more Vonngeut, and (of course) h. sapiens on the fast track to snuffing it.

Observance: Last I heard, everyone on the Dodgers was going to wear #42. I preferred the one-player-per-team option previously discussed, which could have been more creative and classy - different positions, player-spokesmen before games, etc. - and a little more respectful. There was only one Jackie Robinson, and he didn’t wear 25 jerseys at once. Of course I’m dissenting about MLB, which is only a little less twisted and corrupt than the NCAA.

The Missing Bees: thanks for the link, Frances, it’s been forwarded. The hypothesis seems to fit, which leaves people (including me) the choice of ‘turn them off or die.’ Judging from the immediate and ignored hazard of drivin’ ‘n’ talkin’, it’s not too hopeful.

Other News: Rush guitarist denied justice. This reminds me of an NBA announcer parody: “I guess when you get kicked in the nuts, it’s a foul on YOU.” http://tinyurl.com/2h2lw2 The good news is that at least a few of Our Enemies In Blue had to sweat it out; the suit accomplished that much. http://tinyurl.com/34r9cl

  11. I hadn’t even heard Lifeson had been arrested, Zen. And thanks for mentioning Jackie Robinson. I was beginning to wonder if anyone had bothered reading my original post.

James: I’m still not sure what next week holds. Sorry to be vague but you probably know to expect that from me by now, huh?

Frances: Thanks for the photo essay. Powerful.

    Btw, it’s fuckin’ pouring here.

  12. It’s okay, there’ll be plenty of food no matter what so you can just play it by ear and see how it goes… check back tomorrow!

Posted by James  on  from Hell's Kitchen 04/15  at  05:34 PM
  13. If I can make it, James, I certainly will bring food. It is a potluck, right? As or JOS, I guess he’ll be here tomrorow so we’ll find out his plans then.

Sudden break in the rain here...something tells me the worst is yet to come.

  14. This is completely off topic, but I’ve read much of Derrick Jensen’s work, including endgame.  While I think much of his what he’s written is insightful and thought provoking, I do find he sometimes gets a bit shrill for my tastes, perhaps overstating his case.  Then I read something like this and wonder if I’m the insane one for not being more worked up:

Oh my, this is not good.
