Chomsky's job

  1. it is depressing but dirt is the solution.

and it is scottish election day and despite all the scaremongering
and a huge media drive to get us to think we should not have our own independence it is going to
be close between the pro-independence and the pro-union parties (thats pro-union with england, not pro trade union. typically the pro-english union parties are anti-trade union - at least since bLIAR took over labour)

i am not in favour of one party or another, but here is what i think. the poster is a ٨–¨–ion poster (scaremongering) which someone had a couple of words to add to…

  3. last point on that…

A PARCEL OF ROGUES IN A NATION - by ROBERT BURNS

    Original Scots (translation underneath)

    1.

Fareweel to a’ our Scottish fame,
    Fareweel our ancient glory!
Fareweel ev’n to the Scottish name.
    Sae famed in martial story!
Now Sark rins over Salway sands,
An’ Tweed rins to the ocean,
To mark where England’s province stands –
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
    2.
What force or guile could not subdue
    Thro’ many warlike ages
Is wrought now by a coward few
    For hireling traitor’s wages.
The English steel we could disdain,
    Secure in valour’s station;
But English gold has been our bane –
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
    3.
O, would, or I had seen the day
That Treason thus could sell us,
My auld grey head had lien in clay
    Wi’ Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour
    I’ll mak this declaration :-
‘We’re bought and sold for English gold’–
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

    Translation

Farewell to all our Scottish fame,
    Farewell our ancient glory!
Farewell even to the Scottish name.
    So famed in martial story!
Now Sark runs over Salway sands,
And Tweed runs to the ocean,
To mark where England’s province stands -
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

O, would, or I had seen the day
That Treason thus could sell us,
My old grey head had lain in clay (be buried)
    With Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour
I will make this declaration :-
‘We are bought and sold for English gold’-
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

  4. morning michael…

Yeah, Chomsky’s not spreading “The Good News.”

By the way, I watched Mean Streets all the way through for the first time last weekend, great movie.

  8. Hello Expendables...from a sunny, warm Astoria.

    Love the billboard, Michael.

JOS: I guess you now know what a “mook” is.

  15. my time was when daredevil came out and totally disappointed me.  after that, I lost all hope in comic book movies.  then, Sin City came out.  I never read the comics, but I loved most of that movie...it really gave me a comic book feel.  300, despite the racism, was another move that gave me a comic book feel.  If only those directors and technology people could redo daredevil, ghostrider, fantastic four and spiderman.

The new Batman is good...in my opinion.

  16. Did you really think SM 1 and 2 were so bad? I guess it depends how you look at it… they were still awesome compared to DD, FF let alone Hulk or Punisher, and well I wasn’t even motivated to see GR.

I’ll find out next week about SM3… and yeah, I have high hopes for the Batman sequel.

Man, Chomsky would SO not approve of this conversation.

  19. Depressing indeed, Mickey!  As is Chomsky’s book ‘Failed States’, but I enjoyed reading it nevertheless.

Hi, Michael (like both the ‘altered’ billboard and the poem), JOS, James (the Segolene/Sarkozy article cheers me up as well) and frances.  I tend to be slightly depressed at times, so I’ll click on the depression link next.

It is sunny and warm in Astoria but has been very wet in Daylesford and is still damp although the rain has stopped.

    Au revoir, mes chers expendables.

  24. as far as our election is going it is still very close but the two most interesting things going on are major ####-ups with the new voting system and the fact that a young independence activist is currently claiming he was punched by labour MSP (member of Scottish Parliament)

also, a guy stood behind our arse of a supposed leader with a “no trident replacement” sign which looked quite good. will post photos tomorrow if anyone is interested.

  25. and some guy smashed up some ballot boxes with a golf club.

if there are any nra people reading i would just like to say in solidarity that its not golf glubs that damage ballot boxes, its people

  26. depression waxing poetic:

On the Fortuitous Poverty of Memory
    By Renato Redentor Constantino

    An opening benediction:

    Hallowed Homeland, great Fatherland,
Bless the star-spangled armada massing today in the Persian Gulf.
    Bless the gallant, nuclear-powered cavalry.
They have come once more near the place of the malefactors called Iranians to punish purveyors of fell deeds.

    Glorious, indispensable nation,
Bless your cruisers, destroyers, and submarines.
Part the sea for the steel raiment of the USS Nimitz, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier battle groups.
Purify your soldiers so they may do the bidding of the red, white and Bush.
Bring them to temptation but lead them away from the epiphany of remembrance.
The men do not care to remember,
And the women would rather forget,
And the innocent bombs, they know not what they do.
