sorry for the failed attempts above (delete if you want)Posted by michael on from scotland 05/26 at 08:20 AMMichael #1...I like your suggestion, “Friends Made”, I also like Michael #2, “ideas and outrage shared”...what time is it in Scotland?
Posted by joe of maine on from 05/26 at 09:46 AMHello Expendables. Another hot one in NYC.
I agree, of course, Michael (and Joe)...but that doesn’t void the implications of my original post. All of these choices can be accurate and probably are.
For the record, here’s a positive entry:

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/26 at 10:16 AMjoe, scotland is 5 hours ahead of new york but i am not sure how that plays out in the rest of america.
mickey, i agree with a lot the things you put in the post but there are positive aspects to what you have done here. true, we havent stopped the war or all the pointless cruelty that goes on (who has? ever?) but we have helped each other in our attempts to do so and occasionally inspired each other to redouble our efforts. that is something you should be happy about.
Posted by michael on from scotland 05/26 at 11:35 AMMichael #10...I don’t know much about Scotland but all of the u.s. is..quite...behind!
Posted by joe of maine on from 05/26 at 11:39 AMright, i am going out. advance warning - if i post again i will be drunk, hopefully that will be lucid drunk and not maniacal drunk

Posted by michael on from scotland 05/26 at 01:23 PMMickey-- I rather like the fact that blogs are becoming as ubiquitous and necessary as streetcorner barbers.
And everytime I get my hair cut, I praise my barber for being in an honest business that makes me feel good, gives him a living, and does not contribute to world suffering.
Of couse, I am referring to the better barbers (and blogs only).
Once I lived in a town with only two barbers. One was not great but it was always crowded. I couldn’t wait one day so I ran around the corner to the other. There was no one there: surely he could not do too much harm, I thought.
He had delirium tremens and cut me three times! Each time he cut me, I thought-- now he will be more careful. Ouch.
I learned something that day: Move to a better town with better barbers!
Always happy to return to your site Mickey.
Happy 3rd anniversary!
Posted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco, California 05/26 at 01:49 PMMickey #9...You are giving me premature separation anxiety. I have come to depend on this site. To me it is “family” - kind-of like the way Maine joe says that this is the way the world should work. Too many times in my life, every time that I found something that I really liked, it then soon became uninvented and disappeared.
This site is unique. I can’t think of many others that have attracted such a genuinely nice group of participants. In fact, the only other sites that even come close are ones owned by some of the Expendables. Here is an example, for the past few days I have been following the controversy that sort of started when Rosie O’Donnell said that 655,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed, so who are the terrorists. I have visited the ABC news blog and read some of the comments. The level of discussion would have been an embarrassment to anyone who can read.
I like the comments made by michael, Robert, and joe and all others here. I always notice how a difference of opinion never affects the humanity. That makes this place VERY special. We love you Mickey. Congratulations and thanks for ALL that you do.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/26 at 05:12 PMWith a nod to RMJ: Chagos Islanders get another court victory. This ruling explicitly censored the UK government for challenging the original ruling, which is nice. The Ministry for Lesser Breeds (to borrow The Curmudgeons brilliant name) can still challenge in the House of Lords.
And I think you put your finger on it Rosemarie. I quite often don’t agree with the particulars of what someone on CO says, but with the exception of the very occasional troll I’ve never had reason to doubt that an opinion was motivated by a good heart. If you are seriously thinking about packing it in, please hand over ownership to some expendables with web knowlege so we can keep this little corner of webland alive.
Posted by Mew on from round my mates 05/26 at 05:33 PMMew...Thanks for that. I received the court documents a couple of days ago but have not had time to digest them yet. I think that there are still a lot of problems. I am not sure, but I think that Diego Garcia was not affected by this court decision also the u$a still has not been prosecuted, as it should be. This represents just one, in a long list of U.S. crimes against Humanity, secret crimes that schools never teach about and the media talkers don’t know about.
Maine joe...Yesterday I worked outside all day. When I came inside last night I noticed a tick in my leg. I removed it myself. Do you have any “tick” stories to share?
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/26 at 05:53 PMGood evening RMJ...yeah, lime disease seems to be a real concern with many people around here. I don’t know if they are too sensitive or if the possibilities are that great. I guess use a very good natural insect repellent sparingly and if a tick bites you...just bite it right back, or kick it or something. I assume there are no rings around where the tick grabbed hold of you???
Posted by joe of maine on from 05/26 at 06:29 PMHello Expendables. I do plan to keep the blog going precisely for the reasons stated above and that explains some of the changes you’ve seen here recently. Since I’m not writing articles that might be posted here, my main posts have been sporadic and not necessarily geared toward luring in newcomers. Rather, I see this as a space for the amazing group of folks that typically gathers and if that results in newbies, so be it. If not, I’m fine with that, too.
So, as long as you all can deal with me not making daily posts (at least for now), CO will remain open for all to visit and share.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/26 at 06:46 PMjoe...thanks, I have no symptoms, just a tiny red spot. I think that it takes a while for symptoms to appear. I work outside a lot and this is my first tick bite. The little critter had a good hold on me but I won the tug-o-war contest. I always wear boots and long pants when I am working so I am not sure how this guy got on my leg. Today’s news reports that Congressman Schummer was treated today for a tick bite. Those guys in Congress have good health care insurance.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/26 at 06:46 PMThanks, Mickey. You had me worried for a moment there. I feel better now.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/26 at 06:49 PMRMJ # 14, You said.."You are giving me premature separation anxiety. I have come to depend on this site. To me it is “family” - kind-of like the way Maine joe says that this is the way the world should work. Too many times in my life, every time that I found something that I really liked, it then soon became uninvented and disappeared”...I can definitely empathize with you RMJ...whenever I meet someone I can connect with, they either move or die and when it’s shortly after I meet them...well, I almost start believing in VooDoo...! I can feel you kindness, RMJ in your words/choices and your pace. When I see Mickey’s smile when petting the cat...well, I see myself also. A cat was my best friend and therapist for my first 18 years on this planet…
Posted by joe of maine on from 05/26 at 07:11 PMStreetcorner barbers aren’t much use to guys like me and Mickey.
99 percent (or more) of blogs are outlets for rank narcissism and/or trick commerce (i.e. selling readers to advertisers). My own blog began as an email newsletter to sixty or so people in 2002. I had much more interaction with readers then than I do now that my blog potentially reaches millions.
I was born without a telephone number, credit card, email address or website. I hope I die that way too. Hope is a weak word in this context. It’s not hope but a little discipline and a sense of adventure is all it takes to find one’s way back to the non-virtual world. The constructs that trap us are of our own design. Perhaps.
There is a much better picutre of what I’m trying to explain at the conclusion of Nabokov’s Invitation to a Beheading. Great, liberating book.
Posted by Keir on from the hague 05/27 at 07:29 AMKeir #22...I’d like to follow you more on this one...could you say a bit more...I like looking into a newborn’s eyes and try to remember myself, when I was still conscious, before I became a citizen, with all the false messages and bad habits…

Keir #22… I have to check out that book and see what I am missing.
Mickey #24...I was going to say that I have spent the last half of my life trying to unlearn what was taught to me during the first half (but you and Buk say it better).Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/27 at 12:20 PMNice link, thanks Mr Livingtston. Maybe that’s where I went wrong. Sometimes I don’t show up any more.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/27 at 12:24 PMCongratulations on the blog’s third anniversay, Mickey. All the best.
Cheers.
Posted by Ehtesham on from Canada 05/27 at 01:40 PMMZ, congratulations on Year Three. I agree with RMJ’s #14.
I’ve been away ‘cause a good friend who just spent the academic year teaching English in Russia is in town. His visit is an oasis of political discussion and general enjoyment which the US specializes in denying the general public (serial solidarity will get you 3 to 5 in the slam).
The news from Over There is that many elements of the previous system are still intact, but under assault (one exception: health care has become atrocious). The WTO is waiting to get its hooks into Russia, and will do so soon. Until then, most people own their own apartments (no rent), many have some sort of dacha (cottage in the country), and most families are still intact. The generation now coming up is clueless about ownership and power, and will face the brunt of a changeover to a more profit-driven system. How the young mimic media imagery (esp. women, who “dress like prostitutes") is overwhelming to an outsider.
The good news is that he’s met a strong and sane woman there and will return to Eurasia soon. One more over the fence!
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 05/27 at 06:38 PMMickey...by the way...a few earlier posts talked about positive and negative remarks about your 3rd anniversary...well, the ‘Law of 3’ states there must be a positive, a negative, and a neutral combined for anything to happen. Neutral can be positive or negative...so what does all this mean????
Posted by joe of Maine on from 05/27 at 07:36 PMHappy 3rd Anniversary, Mickey! May your blog thrive for a long time. It’s become my favourite - great quotes, graphics and articles and much more, to say nothing about the family of ‘expendables’.
Am back from Melbourne where I spent quite some time at the main market aka ‘Queen Victoria Market’ where one can buy almost everything. I was really surprised by the fact that I loved strolling through the aisles with Alan’s sister-in-law. Info and photos here:

Posted by Tim on from LA,CA,USA 05/28 at 04:28 AMGood Morning everyone...I’m at work...didn’t march with Maine chapter of Veterans for Peace this year...??? Need to work, get the cotton in the barns...no time for parading, stirring up the war mongers on the sidelines, singing, ‘glory, glory, how they screw ya’...yeah just another day, another gallon burned, another billion for mobil/exxon, go to wal-mart to get out of the heat, buying large tupperware containers to store the kids in...wal-mart sells more tupperware containers than anything else...what is it about containers...is this an anal, control thing? Does anyone know why this occurs? Many people go to the gun department after they’ve chosen the correct plastic containers...lots of hunters in maine, probably some are getting ready for the crash...always prepared for hunting, defending oneself from the enemy and if the worst happens, take one’s life, already have tupperware for a cheap coffin...is there anything different about this day for you?
