Frances - that canyon trip sounds amazing.
In case anyone didnt get them off the link, here are my 8…
1. I once microwaved my mobile phone to stop an argument at a party. I had tried reasoning with them but it wasn’t working, I microwaved the phone, end of argument.
2. I was nearly ejected from the houses of parliament for mentioning some of the nastier things about Winston Churchill as the guided tour went by his statue. Every other time I have been there before or since I have been protesting outside.
3. The last time I had to have stitches was when I managed to hit myself on the head with an iron bar.
4. I once drunkenly fell alseep between two parked cars in Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea. I was woken up a little later, covered in snow, by the somewhat bemused owner of one of the cars. The same weekend I also fell asleep in the only gay bar in Seoul (but I am not gay).

Posted by michael on from scotland 07/06 at 11:41 AMI was the best friend of the guy getting the “make over”...they may still air it, but as of now the show might have been cancelled.
Spinal Tap is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 07/06 at 01:47 PMHello Expendables...from humid, humid Astoria. Great stuff today. A nice chance to learn a little more about my fellow peons.
Michael, I have indeed seen This is Spinal Tap. Why do you ask?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/06 at 01:55 PMit is one of my favourite movies too. it is also the best attempt at english accents by american actors in any film (van dyke in mary poppins is appalling - robin williams trying scottish in his stand up is rubbish too as is mel gibson in braveheart)
anyhoo, i asked because i didnt know you managed a band and the manager in spinal tap has the best line..
“i am not co-managing this band with any woman, especially not one that dresses like an australians nightmare” (sorry helga, its a funny line is all)
and if you want to try a scottish accent then…
“what are you doing?” should be said in this way.. don’t try an accent, just say it phonetically and it will work..
“wit yeh day-in?”
but that would be spelt
whit ye daein?
actually, try this, he is a wee bit nauseating but slightly funny too. he is also from edinburgh and there is more than one accent in scotland but some of his points stand....
Posted by michael on from scotland 07/06 at 02:20 PMthere is actually a wee rumour about a spinwatch podcast starting so you might get the chance to hear my dulcet tones!
Posted by michael on from scotland 07/06 at 02:25 PMEight Facts:
1) I once met Antonin Scalia in a 12-student, one hour seminar. He’s a fuckin’ hack.2) I have driven across the US, from Boston to Seattle and back. This includes coasting for 23 miles down the west slope of the continental divide (with astonishing scenery and the road to myself), an emergency stop in Wyoming for about 25 wild turkeys crossing the road, seeing a cow at full gallop, having no heat while driving through the aftermath of a Minnesota blizzard, all while driving a Mazda B2000 pickup that had a crack in the engine block and never gave me a bit of trouble (I thought the occasional bit of blue smoke on start-up was a loose valve).
3) I have caught a trophy largemouth bass, which was released.
4) It took me 20 years to complete a bachelor’s degree. These include the dean’s list, three semesters lost to illness, five schools in two states, one A+ paper, over $30K in debt, and four battles with administrative morons (3-0-1).
5) I have never broken a bone, but I carried a friend’s pack (and served as his crutch until we got to the treeline) for six miles out of the Sierra Nevada when he sprained his ankle. I then drove the 7.5 hours back to LA to get him to hospital… that was a 23 hour day.
6) Controlled Substances: I first smoked pot at age 12 and never wanted to try anything else except peyote (accomplished at two medicine ceremonies), I’ve never liked alcohol or cigarettes (though I smoke cigars when fishing to keep the skeeters away), am biased in favor of natural substances, my favorite place to visit is Amsterdam.
7)I have obedience-trained three cats, one of which understood ten words.
8) Rock Music: The drummer from Rush, Neil Peart, once sent me a postcard after I sent a letter backstage (letter Feb 4, 1992… postcard Nov 22, 1992). I lost the bloody thing, but still have copies of each. I’ve also seen Spinal Tap live, which was the most fun out of all the shows I’ve been to.
Favorite Line: Ian, about his cricket bat: “Well, I suppose it is a totemistic sort of thing ... in the in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is often useful.” (cut to TV being smashed) [Tony Hendra was also editor of the late, great SPY magazine.]

and some of those things are pretty wild
Posted by michael on from scotland 07/06 at 03:57 PMOkay, let me see, without letting myself think about it too much or I’ll never…
1- I have three cats and three huge hanging philodendrons in my medium sort of sized Manhattan apt. It can kinda feel like a jungle safari in there sometimes.
2- I’ve rarely traveled outside of New York City, and the thought of living elsewhere for very long gives me a lot of anxiety. I get curious about life in Copenhagen, but that’s about it.
3- I’ve been pretty good with being vegan for the past decade or so, but I drink a lot of soda, no matter the horrible things I hear about Coke as a corporate monstrosity. I keep telling myself that after I write this or that chapter of this or that novel, I’ll break the aspartame addiction.
4- I have a hard time keeping up with modern pop music-- last concert I saw was the English Beat, just last week at BB King’s Bar and Grill.
5. I formed the Existentialism Book Club last year, but I’m starting to get kinda bored of Kierkegaard and Sartre and all the rest.
6. I was engaged to a woman who broke it off and moved to Canada after 9/11. Yeah, the terrorists won, though now that I think about it, they did me a favor. As far as she’s concerned, I mean.
7. I have the best man at my best friend from high school’s wedding. I was so excited, I dressed up fancier than the groom. After he went back to Oregon with his wife, none of my friends or I heard from him again. When I called him up about it a year later, his only response was, oh, sorry I’m just not good with keeping in touch.
8. I’ve been dating the same woman for about 3.5 months now, now one of my top five longest relationships. And hey Ritchie, she has MS too, been diagnosed for about a year. Early on, not tooo many symptoms, but man… hm. How’s it going with you lately besides your vision if you don’t mind my asking?
Posted by James on from work 07/06 at 04:36 PMHi, Mickey and Michael, Joe of Maine, JOS, frances, Zen Prole, Richie and James from a very wet and cool Daylesford down under. My two-day stay in Melbourne was successful in that I was able to buy a few books and CD’s which just cannot be bought in a place of a mere 4,000 ‘souls’ or so.
Here are eight facts about me:
1) I was born in Germany but have been an Australian citizen since 1987.
2) Like the overwhelming majority of Germans, I went to public schools, i.e. government-run schools.
3) I worked in the Australian public service for 17 years.
4) My favourite writers are almost all American: Richard Ford, Edmund White, Joan Didion, Jim Thompson, etc. Make of that what you want.
5) My favourite composers are Handel and Purcell.
6) I am retired but help out at the local museum in Daylesford a few hours a week.
7) Mr Helga is a self-employed tradesman and an excellent cook. He is also a Spanish Civil War ‘aficionado’.
8) I would like to meet at least one or two expendables in the years to come. I have always wanted to go to Scotland - that’s for Michael.Captcha ‘group’: I am so glad to be a member of the expendables group.
Have a good weekend!
All best,

Posted by Fiona on from Orange County 07/06 at 11:34 PMMichael #17, give me Scotland over Australia in its present state any day - you probably know that our PM Howard is one of the closest chums of GWB and recently said that Australian troops would stay in Iraq ‘indefinitely’. IOW: I can fully understand your Aussie friend wanting to stay in Scotland. Unfortunately I only ever made it to Coventry on my visits to the UK and never any further north. I have been discussing with Mr Helga how good it would be to hire a car in London and then drive up to Scotland on our next (and probably last) overseas trip which should only be 4 1/2 years or so away. Sigh ... Until then, it’s ‘Taggart’ which we both enjoy watching. Oh, and I don’t think I have mentioned that one of my favourite authors is - A L Kennedy. If you haven’t read anything by her, I can’t recommend her highly enough.
Be well in Glasgow!Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 07/08 at 06:43 PM1) I read this blog all the time, including the comments, but very rarely do I comment.
2) I am from the UK, but live in Thailand at the moment.
3) I am Straight Edge.
4) I used to be in a hardcore band, run a label and promote hardcore shows.
5) I was once thrown over the counter of a kebab shop by 4 nazi skinheads
6) I think religion is fundementally good, but it has been ruined by idiots.
7) I admit to liking and reading Harry Potter.
8) I can’t spell to save my life.
