A question from The Clash

Posted by Mickey Z on 07/09 at 04:04 AM
  1. I don’t own a gun and there seems to be inconsistencies as to whether tomatoes are that healthful. Some sources say eat lots of tomatoes other’s say avoid tomatoes or at least eat them in moderation.

So if someone breaks through my front door, since I don’t have a gun, I could lecture them on the nutritional value of tomatoes.

As I divert their attention away from shooting me, I could further confuse them by getting naked and stating I would consider going either way if someone is willing to support me. If they are homophobic they might run screaming for their lives or they might torture me.

I might have to ponder the topics of breaking and entering and murder, which is what america does on a grand scale, globally and also study what foods I could eat with tomatoes to enable maximum nutrition without any side effects I might get from eating them.

    hi all
for anyone interested in the illegal aerial spraying
thats been going on here is a good report, coming out of the UK.
For some reason our area is subject to heavy spraying.  after several months of daily observation I can say that much of what passes for natural cloud over this part of the coast at this time of year, is actually cloud formed by jet trails. what starts out as a grid work of trails gets blown inland and takes on the appearance of a uniform glaring white to gray cloud with a quilted texture, often with odd linear indentations.

  4. I’d come back with the Four Horsemen of Washington Bullets out of a Tommy Gun, that’s what. (Then end up a Ghetto Defendant.) http://tinyurl.com/29qns2

Frances, maybe you’re the one who sent the link, but a scientist checked the skies after 9/11. With all aircraft grounded and the pollution abated for a few days, he found that sunlight was 30% stronger. I think there have been similar experiments in the Sinai.

MZ, the Red Sox have serious problems brewing. Terry Francona has probably screwed the pooch via indecision in the face of excellent options. Now there’s some injuries and uncertainty on top of that. They could have 10 or 12 more wins at this point, but that’s during the relatively breezy first half. If they don’t get their shit together pronto, it could be a rough ride to September 30th. I don’t think they can help but make the playoffs, but this season is already looking like a golden opportunity squandered. Detroit is picking up speed and looks like the team to beat in the AL.

  5. I’m trying to think of some clever reference to Lost in the Supermarket or the Magnificent Seven, but man those are both such awesome songs with smart and funny lyrics I don’t know what else to say. Except RIP Joe Strummer… man, when will men in their 50s stop dying of heart attacks? Is it true he died in his sleep? How odd is that.

  6. Hello Expendables...from a hot and humid Astoria. Zen, I like the Yanks’ chances of catching Boston. However, captcha sez: however.

  7. go Yanks…

Speaking of sports, here’s something on the new Zirin book:

  8. If anyone catches the Red Sox, which is doubtful despite their problems, between Toronto and NY it’s 6-5 and pick ‘em. Whoever gathers their pitching staff first might pull it off. (Is this off subject? We did start with The Clash...)

Has anyone read the new Zirin book? I have his first and it’s excellent. I think his columns are one of the genuine bright spots in journalism of any sort.

    JOS...How is everything????

James, Mickey, Zen, and joe...I was just talking about tomatoes today. I really miss the good old jersey beefstake tomatoes that we got a way back then.

Anybody hear Democracy Now today? Nader’s description of Hillary was right on.

Cindy might run against Polosi if Polosi does not start Impeachment pproceedings. What’s everybody’s view on that?

  11. Hey RMJ…

I forgot to let everyone here know that we found my cousin.  I guy named Ralston (an heir to the Ralston-Purina fortune who lost his son to a drowning accident and now dedicates 200 days of the year driving around the country with his own high-tech boat, side scan sonar and remote operating vehicle) finally made it up to Lake Harding, near Fairbanks.  My aunt, uncle and cousin were there when 4 or 5 hours into his search he found the missing boy who was with Kathy.  He found Kathy two days later at the bottom of the lake, 80 feet down.

My aunt and uncle had her cremated and brought her back home on Friday night.

We are glad that the wait is finally over...but now comes the hard part...going back to our daily lives, without her around.

All in all, the family is holding up well.  I appreciate all the kind words from the Expendables.

  12. Hello RMJ...I wonder how the the world’s people would respond, knowing americans wanted the war criminals prosecuted and not simply impeached, which would not necessarily mean they are removed from office?

Posted by joe of maine  on  from 07/09  at  03:57 PM
  13. JOS...I am very sorry to hear the news about your cousin. I will keep your family in my prayers. I would say that maybe now you have some “closure” but I have never been sure that there really is “closure” after something like that.

James...that’s an amazing view. Whenever I see something like that I try to imagine all of the people and what they are doing in all of those spaces.

joe...I agree with your point. I have had more arguments than I can remember about Impeachment vs Prosecution. I usually end up asking if they would have been satisfied if Hitler had been impeached.

  15. Hello again, everyone. It’s heat wave time in NYC.

JOS: I’m glad your family was given some sense of closure even as the heartache lingers. Thanks for sharing this news with us.

I love the photo idea but I don’t have anything recent to post. Here’s an older shot looking out my front door:

The neighborhood’s changed a bit since then.

  20. JOS, sorry to hear the news about Kathy (captcha sez ‘science’). I hope yr family recovers as time goes on.

I also hope Sheehan does run against Pelosi. I’ll collect tin cans so I can send her some money. The anti-sexist part is appealing; if a man stood on the hustings and called The Speaker a brainless, shallow servant of mediocrity, consumed in vanity while thousands die, there might be a backlash. My main concern is that Sheehan won’t have the constitution (rim shot, please) to thrash her opponent non-stop, which is both deserved and the winning strategy. Attempted sidetracks about God, country, and the flag must be dealt with promptly and harshly.

  26. James, if the US executed people for corruption, the population would likely drop by 30% overnight, leaving us with the perennial Mafia/CIA conundrum: where do we put the bodies?

Captcha sez “what”? I say “Don’t play dumb. You know what you did and why we came here.” (I crack myself up sometimes...)

  28. Hi James, Zen, JOS, richie, Mickey, joe, Helga, frances, Keir, Ehtesham, and all… How is everybody holding up today? My computer room is in the upstairs where it now is about 100* so I’ll be brief. I actually got out my electric fans, both of them, but they are not helping much.

Yep James, Bill Blum is a real gem of a writer and historian. He is also a great guy with a keen sence of humor and wit. Remember when Osama recommended Blum’s book? That proves that Osama has better reading habits than the average usa’r.

  29. Hello again, everyone. Today’s weather could best be described as “oppressive.” But rain is on the way.

Last year at this time, NYC was entering an extended triple-digit heat wave and my neighborhood was subject to an extended blackout.

Posted by Mickey Z.  on  from Astoria 07/10  at  06:29 PM
  30. Mickey, RMJ, the weather in Maine has been excellent. Cool..I sleep with a wool blanket..true.

I’m quite sure the heat wave will come North.
The weather seldom bothers me...it’s always the social climate I have problems with.

The Bay was calm and dead silent this morning at 6am. The water was like glass with a beautiful mist out by the islands. Only a few ducks occasionally interrupting the silence...frequently you can see Osprey diving for fish, quite a sight.
