Summer re-runs, Part III
hello everyone. did i miss anything at the weekend? i have been out and about again.
i have recently become aware of a certain mr kent hovind.
GET THIS MAN AN AGENT…
Posted by michael on from scotland 07/17 at 09:21 AMMICKEY—Do you ever ponder where your knack for wordsmithing “actually” began?? Was it in 4th grade grammar, when Sister Conchita made you stand at the board after class and write—59 times—“I am not perfect - I repent for all my TrAnSgReSsIoNs” .. or was it when Mr Scolari—said—“ Michael - say hello to mama and papa - eh - and be a good boy and take the lamb chops right home—no stoppin in the street for stickball - this time—papa s’ gonna be hungry!” .. You pondered old man Scolari’s words as you ate the “baby ruth” he always put in the sack to thank u’ for being a good son.. Or == was it getting ready to go on stage in that smokey Brooklyn Club—just one more night—just one more buck—tonite “The Man” is stoppin by—to check us out and maybe give us a record deal!! Me thinks it has something to do with the Love-Sonnets you use to craft out on the fire-escape—waiting for “the love-of-your-life” to call or stop by after work --- Mmmmm—wherever - whenever - however - whyever—it’s in your fabric—and I / WE—love visiting .. and PoNdErINg—with you as well --- THANK YOU SISTER CONCHITA --WHEREVER YOU ARE!!—Mickey Z turned out OK after all == smile == how bout a lil’ Blake Lewis doin’ the Zombies “TIME OF THE SEASON”
Posted by Richie on from st cloud / n ft myers 07/17 at 09:41 AMWow...you do leave some crazy comments Richie. Did you and Mick grow up together? I thought I read that here before, but I wasn’t sure.
Morning michael...I don’t have sound at work, so I can’t hear how good or bad Kent is.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 07/17 at 10:02 AMJOS, the mr hovind in question is a lunatic creationist type.
the link is just to a song someone had done about him
Posted by michael on from scotland 07/17 at 10:42 AMmichael #1...yes, you missed the plan to take over the world.
Hi richie and JOS...How’s it going?
Mickey...thanks for the link. Your article is one that should be read every day.
Zen...Great movie review! The right wing media is really beating up on Mike Moore. No surprise there - they like Wall Street running the health care industry.Looks like we only have 90 days to get a new trial for Troy Davis - but he is still alive.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/17 at 12:43 PMHello Expendables...from muggy, humid Astoria.
Michael: Good to have you back. Now where’s Keir and Frances and Helga and Amelopsis and ... ?
JOS: I only know Rich from here...when he showed up on my blog-step.
Rich: My older sister taight me to read when I was 4. I guess that got me started on wanting to write.Hello there, RMJ…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/17 at 01:22 PMHello to all the Expendables from a humid Massachusetts.
My short review of “Sicko” is at the end of yesterday’s posts (July 16).
Michael, I think the spellings of “Hovind” and “hominid” are too close for comfort. His performance bits on YouTube look like they were lifted from the film “Jesus Camp.” Kent scored himself a ten-spot in the can, so we won’t be hearing from him for a while.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 07/17 at 02:43 PMThis came to mind recently:

John Lydon and Afrika Bambaata. 1984 was a great year.
Posted by James on from work 07/17 at 04:20 PM“the only viable context for future survival seems to be the universe or, more immediately, the planet Earth and its integral functioning as the controlling referent. Only such a referent to the Earth itself, beyond all the various nations of the planet, can evoke a sense of common future. There needs to be a realization that no nation has a future if the planet does not have a future. Any nation that plunders its own resources for economic gain, to the detriment of the larger context of the geological or biological systems of the Earth, is endangering all the nations, including itself.”...Thomas Berry.
Let’s give a standing ovation to the deciders and the destroyers. Let’s rejoice in knowing the deciders understand the interrelatedness of all things, that they have the well being of all life forms as their primary concerns.
So the man replied, “you’re lucky you don’t live in another country”. I said, “well, if it’s worst than here, you’re damn right I’m lucky!” There appears to be so many diversions from any truth, excuses, scapegoating, denying. How can we tell someone the truth while we’re lying to ourselves?
The doctor responded to the article on windmills and alternative energy. There was no mention to the accompanied article on wide spread poverty in the land owned and ruled by the deciders and the destroyers.
Have you ever lived in another country, he asked?
Let’s focus on another country so we don’t have to deal with marching in place...in quicksand......Posted by joe of maine on from 07/17 at 06:50 PMSummer re-runs. Mickey I miss your articles. Here is a challenge to you: take 4 hours a day off blogging, go off-line and write a real essay-article every month. Everyone likes your blogging but we don’t get so many articles. People must love dipping in to your blog for all your creative ideas but keep some ideas for you and then write an article. Recently you discussed the Zinn article. Why didn’t you do an essay discussing that article instead of blogging about it? Don’t just hand over your ideas for others. Be the big man. Keep up your essays. Give yourself 4 hours a day off the net and show us how cool you are. Stop writing about “Why should I write” and write. OK, one essay a month or every 2 months atleast and then get bloggers to discuss it. Go boy. I say this because I want to see articles and not only blogging.
Posted by Alison on from Toronto 07/17 at 07:59 PMThanks, Alison...but let me one thing perfectly clear: I don’t spend “hours” each day blogging. I create a post, put it up, and whenever someone comments, I get an e-mail. In other words, blogging does nothing to prevent me from writing articles.
Still, having said that, I am doing some writing now. I am starting a new column with Veg News soon, I’m again submitting editorials to Metro here in NYC, I have some short fiction due to go online very soon, and I just started a freelance ghostwriting gig (so it’s not my writing but it is writing). Besides that, I’m about to take two trips to Texas to help my mom and I might begin a slow transition from training early morning clients to working something like a “real” job. I have to earn more money.
So, while I appreciate you missing my articles (you’re only third or fourth person to even notice I stopped, btw), I have to wonder what purpose it’d serve for me to go back to churning out essays for Counterpunch.
That’s my story, sad but true…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/17 at 08:15 PMThanks for your long reply Mickey. I do genuinely like your writing. You have a creative, fresh energy which I like, and can relate to. I did notice you stopped writing and I’m not advocating you write for CounterPunch. I find it a bit much when they (CP)ask for donations and rarely pay their writers and then an editor writes about his overseas trips. I think it’d be better to work for Wal Mart, as they atleast pay minimum wages… I’m sure that point won’t please someone. I just noticed an essay written last week which tied in with your Zinn comments and I thought Mickey should put things into essay form and not let others take his energy and thoughts and re-process them. Often it is the genuine hearted people who give up. And it is often the other people seeking cash and fame who keep going with their thick skin, and keep writing. It is the others who are genuine and should not give up, and that is why I wrote that. I wanted to encourage you, and say “look after yourself”. I agree that you should not work for free, but maybe if you write essays, write them as an essay on your blog. Also, write drafts on a different computer to the one connected to the net. My net got spyware on it via spam mail, and my typing was transmitted to another computer. I was so angry and found my work in someone else’s work. Not happy. Advice to all creative people: do drafts on a different computer that is never connected to the net. When you finish a draft and are ready to send it off, then and only then take a floppy and copy it to the internet connected computer. There are brain dead writers out there who steal ideas through spyware. Never do drafts on a net connected computer. I learnt the hard way. Take care Mickey. I meant well. I agree with you. I just sense the “give up” and “confused” factor and I’m often there in my own mind, so I want to encourage you.
Posted by Alison on from Toronto 07/17 at 08:53 PMThanks again, Alison. I truly appreciate you taking so much time to offer your feedback. Do I know you? Also, I’d love to see that essay that commented on Zinn. Do you have a link?
Anyway, I’m obviously at a crossroads of sorts and all such input is useful and welcome. I do hope you’ll stay in touch and join in the discussions here again.
Captcha sez: “bed” and that’s where I’m headed now.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/17 at 09:00 PMSleep well. I won’t get myself into hot water by sending a link re Zinn article. Just trust me that my advice is well intentioned. And please all writers, don’t use the same computer for doing drafts and using email. Use 2 if you can afford it. I think we all go through these crossroads, Mickey. Life is always like that if you are genuine about what you do. There’s something wrong if you don’t question these things. I look forward to you publishing some proper essays on your site, or mini essays. I think putting them on your own blog is as good as putting them anywhere else. Atleast you are writing and owning your own thoughts. Bed time here too. Sweet dreams.
