Art imitates strife

  1. Police Terror #1: in my neck of the empire, traffic stops are now apparently made with two police cars (this may be a ‘two officers’ thing, as cars now only operate with one cop). I wonder why this is. Seeing two cars behind someone who likely did 45 in a 35 looks paranoid, though passersby do pay closer attention and this may curb spontaneous violence.

Police Terror #2: Have you seen the prices of the Police reunion tour tickets? They should break up with several US dates left, then gather themselves for a few Euro gigs. (Lookout, Keir! They’re coming to AmDam.)

In movie news, the PBS documentary “Jonestown” is now at Netflix. It was so powerful I wondered how it got on PBS.

My review of “Sicko” remains at the end of Monday’s posts.

  4. Good morning everyone...Art Imitates Strife…

I know people who say they like listening to ‘Blues’

Yet, they don’t want to hear an African American, crudely strumming an acoustic guitar and singing, crying over his life’s experience??? These same people feel Led Zeppelin does it better?

Some people would prefer a TV documentary about hunger over listening to their next door neighbor talk about their depression, hunger.

Art entertains some people, while others feel more deeply connected to the artist, feel and perhaps relate to the experience of the artist.

Is art that represents the plight of all life, the sadness, the joy, the beauty, is this objective art or does it really matter if it is or not?

I’m touched more by what is generally referred to as Nature more than most man created expressions, though I’m deeply moved by that which seems to touch on a universal theme. I think the varied art forms can have more or less impact on individuals...hearing, seeing, touching and the ways people sense and perceive their life experiences. Conscious or unconscious

  6. I wasn’t going to comment today because I don’t have anything profound to say, but reading the other comments about “art” made me think back to the very first time that I heard Erroll Garner. I had grown up in a rural coal mining area where there was very little exposure to “culture”. The only musical instrument anyone ever saw was an accordion. Shortly after I moved to Schenectady, while listening to the radio one night, I heard sounds unlike anything I had ever heard before. I was instantly hooked. No one here will understand this - but even now, many years later, every time that I (the sort-of-Agnostic) hear Garner play, it makes me believe in God. No one, especially one who never had any musical training could play like that unless there was Divine Intervention. Garner never had any musical training and never did learn to read or write music but he went on to compose some of the best.

  9. Hello everyone. Like the blog, guys and girls. The chat between Mickey and Alison was good yesterday. Creative people need all the encouragement they can get. My friend wrote an essay for Counterpunch and then was asked by the editor to put the essay in a book. The friend agreed and was told there would be payment later. The book sold okay on amazon sales rank but the friend never even got a ten dollars or more payment. She stopped contributing writing there. She didn’t want to make a fuss as she liked their politics and all. Alison’s joke about WalMart seems spot on. Hopefully the editors might start sending out ten dollar payments for stories published in book format. Then my friend could buy a CD or something. WOW!!!

  10. Hi Bob…

Mickey #8...my mother was a fan of your Art. She liked the part when he talked to children - “Kids say the darndest things”, I think it was called.

joe #7...Thank YOU, an atheist might say that art is the result of neurotransmitters, ahh but to a poet “art” is a lot more.

It’s so cold and dreary here and all of this talk about art is making want to read “The Raven”.
