The Spirit of Radio

Posted by Mickey Z on 08/28 at 04:28 AM
  1. Good morning all...There are many good comments from the last day or two - I will add to them later when I get back....Noriega, EMFs, radioactive flatware...to much to consume all at once. I just want to say that when I was growing up, the main source of music in my home was a crank up Victrola in the attic and a radio in the kitchen. I wanted to fall asleep to music, so built a crystal set using the bed springs as an antenna. I got a little night music and a lot of static.

  2. Good morning, RMJ. I mailed your book yesterday.

  3. Good Morning Mickey and RMJ...too bad I have dial-up Rush is a great band. RMJ, my story’s the same but did not build a crystal set. I’m proud of you.

My first great audio system was a $10 sears AM only. I stole a speaker from a drive in theater, hooked it up to the AM, the illusion of stereo. I was as happy as a swordfish even with the static, never felt guilty for stealing the speaker. I was in ecstasy being able to adjust the volumn of both speakers independently. The only occupation that I gave thought to was an audio engineer...but then I would have been spending much time mixing horrible music!

  4. I don’t listen to NPR anymore.

  5. MZ, Rush could drop “Tom Sawyer” from their act (many wish they would) but they would be chased away if they dropped “The Spirit Of Radio.” When Geddy sings ‘concert hall’ in the last stanza, they always have banks of white lights shining out from the stage. Everyone’s hands go up and the cheering peaks. It’s always a high point.

I’ve come back again to Ice Cube’s “Death Certificate” (1991), which has the outstanding “I Wanna Kill Sam.” http://tinyurl.com/yoos8p
These lyrics don’t capture the voiceovers and other effects, but are worth a look.

Robert, NPR is a suitable tool for torture.

Joe, yesterday’s info on Noriega was great to read. I don’t see him being handed over to the French, but that lengthy Bush caper belongs on the political map. (see also ‘daddy dust,’ Operation Just Because)

  6. Zen: I’ve seen many, many of my favorite rock bands in concert but not Rush. One day, I hope to remedy that. As for Ice Cube, isn’t he the guy in Are We There Yet?

    Hello Joe and Robert.

  7. Hey Mickey, yes I believe he was. And in Ghosts of Mars. A fine up and coming young actor… reminiscent of that Bob Dylan guy, star of one of my favorite westerns, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. He had such promise; too bad his career just fell off the map. Unlike my favorite actor, Tom Waits, of Francis Coppola’s Dracula, and Robert Altman’s Short Cuts.

Maybe Geddy Lee will be in the next Harry Potter or something.

  8. Hi James...How’s work?
Thanks for mailing the book, Mickey. I will be watching for it.
Zen...news is reporting that Manuel will go to France???? Should be interesting. I think we should give him and all other political prisoners a “getting-out-of-jail” party.
joe...I admire your resourcefulness in making the midnight requisition.
    Robert #4...me too.

  9. RMJ, it’s okay, though I still can’t find my stapler… or afford all the dental work I need done.

Posted by James  on  from Hell's Kitchen 08/28  at  04:17 PM
  10. James, 9...I feel for you James. I recently had dental work due to a car accident. Short story, my dentist is at least a kind, calm, gentle lady.

This damn corporate dentistry is dehumanizing!

Posted by joe of maine  on  from 08/28  at  04:34 PM
  11. joe...you didn’t have to out of the country to find a dentist? I think I’ll move to Maine - you still have dentists there - amazing.

James...Don’t worry until they make you work in the basement and turn all of the lights off.

  12. Dentist? What’s a dentist?

Posted by Mickey Z.  on  from Astoria 08/28  at  04:42 PM
  13. Years ago, I worked in an O.R. as the Egor who brought the victims to the mad scientists. I was shocked, at that time, that pulling wisdom teeth had become oral surgeons bread and butter, displacing tonsils.

    The brutality of it all…

The first dentist I met in Maine, all of his walls were lined with photos of his yacht...that his patients paid for. He was a navy reserve lifer...I couldn’t stand to even listen to the critter.

Posted by joe of maine  on  from 08/28  at  05:16 PM
  14. Prosecute all dentists...and anyone who puts their hands in someone else’s mouth…

To a more pleasant thought...I like this paragraph from...’A Woman’s Creed’

Bread. A Clean Sky. Active peace. A woman’s voice singing somewhere, melody drifting like smoke from the cookfires. The army disbanded, the harvest abundant. The wound healed, the child wanted, the prisoner freed, the body’s integrity honored, the lover returned. The magical skill that reads marks into meaning. The labor equal, fair, and valued. Delight in the challenge for consensus to solve problems. No hand raised in any gesture but greeting. Secure interiors - of heart, home, land, - so firm as to make secure borders irrelevant at last. And everywhere laughter, care, celebration, dancing, contentment. A humble, early paradise, in the now.

  15. I suppose if most Americans can’t find Iraq on a map, there’s little chance of realizing if Mickey Z is a fake personality. You win, Alex. Be proud of yourself for your craft. I don’t respect it. Obviously you enjoy it. A lonely man needs to occupy himself somehow. Cheers.

  17. In the Limelight is another very nice Rush tune. Flows very well.

Three piece bands can do a lot. Years ago, 70’s, there was a trio from Poland. SBB...Search, Break, Build. I had a live recording from some club in Krakow. More a blues, jazzy metal. I think the group still exists and produces music.

I worked in a machine shop during the time, ‘Working Man’ was played regularly on FM stations. It felt right, while working under some lunatic who was a graduate from Notre Dame. He enjoyed treating people like shit but made it a point to visit the pope in Philadelphia. A natural succession. Has any pope spoken out about depleted uranium? I always thought pope’s did things like this. Perhaps the pope owns a facility that manufacturers depleted uranium for weapons. Along with the eating utensils, the pope could manufacture beads, all the beads these people wear while praying their hypocrisy will save the universe from their lies.

  18. joe, i refer you to bill hicks… the fac tat they have to have a popemobile so he doesn’t get shot - yeah, there is faith in action

in fact, even before that you have orwell

  19. I told a man that my car got great gas mileage. He said he is a minister and if I renewed my relationship with god, I would get greater gas mileage.

At one point in this conversation, he stated if we could find the correct map, specific geographic region would indicate hell. He wasn’t referring to the u.s. He was desperate to convert me. I didn’t ask to be converted. I let him know I was aware of these popular beliefs, however I didn’t agree. Stating I didn’t agree was like driving a stake through John Howard’s heart. It need not be a stake made from depleted uranium. It could be any decent grade of carbon steel, stainless steel, or any alloy. I found out this man who was trying to convert me is a cousin who I had never met. As I left, he warmly stated he would like to get together again. The conversation might have been a bit more energized had it not been for his 2 vulnerable young daughters, who were curious about me...I didn’t want to be their fathers devil.

  21. Mostly, these days, I have been listening to instrumental music.  Jazz, blues, techno trance.
But these guys are always good for a “pick me up” if I am feeling blue.  Gerome is a mean mouth harp player, probably the best I ever heard....but, then again I dont get out much.

  24. If you like Ice Cube you got to see Boyz in the Hood.  First-rate.

Nice poem Joe, by way of understatement.

Praise loneliness! The onesome and the twosome!

Great story Michael.  And Tony is exactly whom, and George?  In the context of Twain’s comment that Congress is the only truly criminal class in America, and Tony’s photo, could it be that Tony is not Prime Minister at all, but a US senator?  [And should he be tried at the World Court along with the war criminals Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, Perle, Abrams, Ledeen, Kristol, ad nauseum?]
