The Vietnam War (in one sentence)
Good Morning Mickey and everyone in this world in turmoil...I like Malcolm X statement.
At some time during our maturing, character development, we acquire a social conscience. We understand as an individual, there are other people in this room, in this house, this world.
This growing process doesn’t seem to occur in america...why? Americans seem like the little child who wants both nipples and won’t, can’t, acknowledge their sibling...why?
The act of acquiring beyond what is necessary doens’t seem to be in our consciousness either.
We compete, argue, manipulate, lie, fight to get our way...we Need to have our way...our sister or brother doesn’t count. Who is responsible to help a child learn character development, which part of is understanding their relationship to other people? And who is responsible, to help the teacher of the child to become responsive to others?
So is there lack of knowing, understanding this control characteristic, greed, that is modeled for each new generation?
Posted by joe maine on from 09/30 at 09:39 AMSpeaking of Vietnam, I found Military History Quarterly while browsing in an out of town public library. There’s an article about an early battle of Hanoi, post-WWII, an effort to start shutting down the French occupation. Ho had recently discovered that all the democracy talk coming out of the West wasn’t intended for yellow people, and the battle was among the first to contest control of Hanoi.
I gathered it was before the US started sending boatloads of supplies to the French, as both sides were on a shoestring. The clarity of General Giap’s thinking under such constraints was impressive. Strategic thought is much the same thing across disciplines and venues and I couldn’t help comparing other pseudo-campaigners with the real thing; planning, goals, swift communication, shifting resources, and timing are the tools. Oh yeah, and the WILL TO PREVAIL. It’s a shame these ideas are too-often conceded to the political right (a notable exception is the Zapatistas).
