The Topic of Cancer
the cancer epidemic continues to grow. some of the ‘conventional’ treatments do have a good success rate for some kinds of cancer but in other cases prolong life at the expense of making the patient feel permamently dreadful.
some ‘alternative’ treatments may or may not work. there are certainly a lot of charlatans out there tho, giving false hopes.
i think making the changes in the toxicity of the environment (leading to toxicity in food, water etc) could be the key to prevention of many of these cancers.
p.s. i am joining you on the front page of opednews right now…
http://tinyurl.com/yqo8t9Posted by michael on from scotland 10/05 at 09:31 AMI’m with Michael on overall toxicity being the culprit. A radio station in Providence, RI, is now doing a fundraiser for breast cancer, with the tag that “North American women have the highest rates of breast cancer in the world.” Mass consumption and contempt for the environment weren’t mentioned. Hmmmm.
Dozens of successful alternative therapies are constantly dragged through the mud, with the heavyweight title-holder being cannabis. Conversely, there are widely-used prescription drugs that have undergone poor safety testing, and long-term use bears unknown hazards (they are very profitable, however).
Harris Coulter’s “Divided Legacy” is a solid history of the divide between traditional homeopathy and moneymaking medicine. I didn’t realize the fourth volume, covering the 20th century, was in print.
Another gem is William Dufty’s “Sugar Blues.” Sweets are a constant battle for me, but when I first kicked back in 2004 I lost 15 pounds in six weeks. Where the hell is my commercial?! “7% of my body weight disappeared because I stopped stuffing myself with sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. Thanks, um...er...basic literacy and the public library sytem!”

Posted by Richie on from N FT MYERS FL ------ HURRICANE COUNTRY ***** 10/05 at 10:28 AMI have to agree with you on Dufty’s Sugar Blues Zen; I read it for the first time about twenty years ago and to me it rings true that sugar is a major contributor to cancer as well as just about all of the refined flours and chemicals we call “food” these days. Trying to stay off or at least minimize my consumption of this addictive drug has been a struggle for me most of my life and I’m sure it will eventually kill me some day--unless of course the garbage in the air, water and soil doesn’t do it first…
Posted by Buddhamonkeydevil on from USSA 10/05 at 10:28 AMI still don’t know what to say or think about conventional vs. alternative treatments for cancer or for other ailments… my mother had chemo for her short bout of breast cancer, and I’m glad she did, considering how well it went and how effective it was for her. And like Richie says, he takes both the amoxicylin AND pursues holistic treaments.
Richie, I’ve been so worried and had so many questions for you, so I’ll be writing to Richiedeadhead a little later today… so the James you see there will be me. And I’m really glad to hear that you have the support you need both with Barby and your doctors and everything else.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 10/05 at 10:57 AMHello Expendables. Another unseasonably warm day in NYC.
Congrats on the article, Michael.
As for my article, re-read the last paragraph (of the article itself). I’m not blindly supporting anything except awareness and prevention.

PLease feel free to check out Johanna Budwig approach to cancer...let me know what you think...on the other hand, don’t check this out...(-:
Posted by joe maine on from 10/05 at 11:28 AMForgot to ask...what causes cancer? Could it be living in a miserable society, eating poorly, no humanity, depression, little exercise and happiness, living up to lies, etc...manifested by body becoming unhealthy, weaker areas of body developing what doctors for dollars call cancer. This statement can be debated...I won’t participate in debate for we don’t know what it is to have healthy society to live in...statistics from other cultures, indigenous and dictatorial, different wealther climates, etc.

Posted by Richie on from THE NORTHSIDE OF FT MYERS --- EDISON'S RETREAT### 10/05 at 12:13 PMGot to start by backing up Michael’s post that Hitchen’s is a complete c**k. He’s now almost the archetypal British commissar.
As for cancer. Both my parents went from cancer. I remember clearly though, seeing Kevin from Backstreet Boys on TV talking about how everyone now at least knows someone who had cancer. I remember thinking if it was even coming through from Boy Bands on their primetime slots it must be getting out of hand.
Posted by Andy on from Shanghai 10/05 at 08:54 PMHey, hey, hey...the only thing allowed “offshore” on, in, about, or near, America is corporate profits hidden “offshore” in the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands.
Mickey is the title of your article a take on Henry Miller’s book’s title, the only letter of which you’re missing is “r”? - a book on my list of the top five most hilarious books? It was unseasonable hot and humid in Chicago today, had to be above 90 in October, I’d bet a record high! Glad global warming isn’t a problem. What can I do about the horror I feel for the ever increasing number of SUVs I see on the roadways today, not to speak of the long lines of cars idling at traffic lights?
Joe #9; I think you are right about those causes of cancer. Would that there were some homeopathic medication that could address those conditions of stress you mention.
Posted by Tracy McLellan on from Chicago 10/06 at 01:01 AM13, Tracy...I don’t know if there’s any kind of medication that would cure or even compensate for an oppressive society that causes so much internal strife...leading to dis-ease of so many types.
Our ‘adaptability’ is as much a negative as it is the virtue that so many people boasts it is. Normalizing a sick society can only make us ill to some degree...I think. How can we internalize so much madness, pollution, live like automatons, be disconnected from the rest of nature and be healthy?
Posted by joe maine on from 10/06 at 06:20 AMHello again, everyone. Yeah, Tracy, I was riffing off Miller’s book.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/06 at 07:01 AMSomeone very smart and in the medical research community once warned me that the ubiquity of plastic in everything we touch including the containers for food and drinks is going to be discovered as the cause of a health crisis much as lead was for the Romans. I avoid the stuff at all costs and especially anything stored in plastic containers including bottles, styrofoam cups, plastic takeout trays, etc.
Posted by matt on from new york city 10/06 at 08:00 AMI agree, Matt. If viewed objectively, collective human behavior appears like mass suicide.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/06 at 08:55 AMIs this what will build a healthy society???
The Department of Homeland Security is currently sponsoring an event in Huntsville, AL where children have the opportunity to participate in a mock martial law oriented disaster exercise. The event called the Be Ready Camp is being held in two sessions as part of the government’s National Preparedness Month initiative. Run under the guise of disaster preparedness, the Be Ready Camp is a program clearly designed to indoctrinate the youth of our country into the culture of fear and hysteria that the government has surrounded us with since the attacks of 9/11. This program is also designed to desensitize children in order for them to accept and serve the future government control grid that will surround them when they become adults.
Posted by joe maine on from 10/06 at 11:51 AMSome people have health insurance and others have none. Kenneth Walker stated he refused to buy life insurance because he felt, it being based on death, he would not participate.
How do other cultures describe, what are their words for, -Have and Have Nots-?
Posted by joe maine on from 10/06 at 06:29 PMEvening all.
You can’t possibly be referring to ‘class’ Joe. How tedious, unsexy and unamerican! Other cultures I don’t know, but there are plenty of good english words, some of them very enjoyable, for the haves.
I’ve always found it odd and strangely brazen how americans refer to class in that A-E, 1-5, primary school grading system way. E for effort, must try harder. Its been lovely weather here in southern England the last few days Mickey, warm and with skies the ancient greeks would have called bronze. Less happily, yet another birch in my lane has been butchered. Growing up, this lane was locally famous for its beautiful mature silver birches, now its looking more and more like a street in anytown anywhere in Britain. Could I tell you the name of the ‘neighbour’ who cut it down? Nope, and thats probably the problem right there.
Still reeling drunkenly from England’s astonishing win against Australia in the Rugby world cup, not a nationalist bone in my body but its feels very good indeed to beat those cocky convicts. I’m almost glad Helga isn’t around these days, as I’d feel extra obnoxious then.
