The Return of Hammer Time

  1. instead of the hammer and the nail what about a missile? it doesnt matter if you are the missile, the building or the person inside the building - everybody gets it.

  2. Hey Michael. I was sort of thinking like this: The hammer is the power elite (corporate leaders, military, gov’t, etc.). The nail is us: the privileged West. The wood is the Third World, the environment, etc. So, we are used to smash those lower than us, but we feel pain, too. I dunno...maybe I should flesh it out into an article

  5. Mickey 2...Hammers, nails, pain...???

Dr. Damasio sez, that ‘Mind’ functions by way of a network of neural synapses in the brain that become literally ‘destroyed’ - when confronted by new ‘knowledge’ - They have to be literally broken to bits and rebuilt - and this ‘destruction’ causes actual physical pain to the individual.

We — as a society — now have become ‘pain-adverse’ — to the point that we would rather actually ‘die’ than ‘learn’ something new — and endure the actual ‘pain’ of new learning — therefore we are now at absolute mortal risk because of our inability to make life saving ‘painful’ judgments.

So what the hell does this mean? We’ll only get dumber? Or...find courage to deal with what’s painful in our personal lives????

  9. Good question Joe.  I bet if he lived today he might be-- or maybe boxing the components in China.

    I just got home.

Earlier, I stopped off at a Jack-In-The-Box.  I haven’t been to fast food places in awhile.

As I waited for my burger (I know… I know), I watched the employees hustling behind the counter.  The place was stifling-- there was no adequate ventilation and it was hot.  I insisted on extra packets of everything-- hoping to take some home with me-- and I greedily grabbed as many napkins as I could.

I was impressed by the workers’ earnestness to do their jobs correctly-- and I couldn’t help but find it thoroughly remarkable.  I can’t believe they are adequately rewarded in this expensive city. I watched the customers patiently waiting-- no doubt coming in from jobs little better.

To wait-- what a luxurious tax.

A mother yelled at her 4 or 5 year old boy to behave without ever ungluing her eyes from one of these little portable Nintendo boxes which she held with both hands in front of her face the entire time they were there.  The little boy dutifully obeyed within the limits of his attention span-- or until the mother’s boyfriend, uncomfortable from being ignored, playfully sparred with the child.  The boyfriend and child left while she lingered.  I told her as she rose to go catch up with them, “What a beautiful boy you have!”

    She beamed with deep pride.

A lone Chinese woman with dark skin and a bulldog face had a holly clasp in her hair.  I watched her play with the pages of a novel for awhile, then take an unwrapped CD out of her purse and stick a Christmas bow on it.  Expressionless, she rose, and stumbled off.

For awhile I forgot the encyclopedia of politically-correct troubles we have in the world as I pondered the meaning of the things I saw tonight.

What do we really know about what is important?

  10. Michael, I am in awe of your masochistic level of YouTube tolerance. But I’ll see your talking bollocks and raise you an idiotic American fundie bumper sticker: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4given

If there’s a hammer and nails joke in there, I’d set it in a Home Depot TV commercial. “You can do it. We can help.”

Here’s to finding new life forms with a butter knife and two slices of bread. (captcha sez ‘learned’ - I is!)

  11. Wasn’t Jesus just the *son* of a carpenter? I’m pretty sure he wasn’t an actual Carpenter:

  12. Good Morning everone...I received an email this morning from a woman who is at the receiving end of u.s. bombs...she asked me to pray for her and her family. I’m at work and still trying to hold back tears...perhaps we can at least think pleasant thoughts and direct them to her?

  13. As taxpayers, maybe we should all turn ourselves in as accomplices to the crime.

  14. Yep, as taxpayers, voters, and participants in the war economy, we are all complicit.
