Lab rats, corporate science, and the monsters we’ve all become

  1. Great article there, Mickey. It reminds me of the Colbert Report this morning. Stephen’s guest was an author who said that humans share 98%? of their DNA with apes.

Remembering Eddie....Today is the anniversary of the execution of Pvt. Eddie Slovik. Eddie was a 24 year old. His crime was that he refused to kill. The US Army executed him by firing squad in 1945.

    Brattleboro on
    the right track

Congratulations to Brattleboro for its historic stand. The petition calling for the indictment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney deserves support.

The only criticism should be that the petition does not go far enough. It should also call for the indictment of those members of Congress who voted to fund the war. Members of the Clinton administration are also complicit.

The U.S. bombing of Iraq has continued since 1991. It is estimated that more than two million innocent Iraqi civilians, many of them children, have been killed.

  3. Forgot to say that everyone should see “SICKO” - even those who already have the information that the film contains. It is a powerful emotional experience.

  4. Bravo, RMJ...excellent letter.

  5. Reading Vegan Freaks right now and I must admit it’s a very compelling book. I think I’m ready to wade into Vegan waters and articles like yours propel me even more to do so.

  6. That’s great news, David. If there’s anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to ask.

  7. Test Pattern: Exhibit B in animal testing is the prescription you may have gotten from the vet. Same antibiotic for pets, but costs a fraction as much because liability is limited to the replacement of the animal. (I’m still in favor of testing on lawyers; for morality and common sense, as well as drug toxicity.)

I need to have a look at Vegan Freaks. My diet’s become as flabby as our constitutional protections. (rim shot, please)

Animal Experimentation, Part 2: Canada Geese aren’t so bright, but are often large. While out walking, a dozen of them did a landing skid onto the frozen pond across the way. Never seen that before, and wondered if it hurt their feet (they probably ask similar questions about football). A few minutes later, another first sighting: a male Belted Kingfisher shopping for dinner along a creek. Handsome bird, and the head and beak are surprisingly large. Check out the sound link here: http://tinyurl.com/39pmgx

Great idea to have a Sicko screening. The same for direct action.

  8. Smells like bullshit to me as well, Mickey!  And that IS a great article and a great petition (Rosemarie #2).  Can’t remember how long ago I read that all the animal testing which is done is almost entirely useless because animals’ organisms react to drugs differently from human organisms.

Hi to Rosemarie, David and Zen Prole from a sunny, but not too warm (77F) Daylesford.

    Be well!

  11. Great line from Mick’s link:

“While Obama — apparently spooked back into say-no-evil “general election mode” by his New Hampshire ass-whippings — bared his vagina to the state of Nevada...”

  12. RMJ, 2, I agree...The system of expansionism by greed and war, the complete disregard for all life forms, the people who recite peace/Gandhi when speaking about wars elsewhere, who accept violence committed against them everyday, right here in america, the poisoning and torture of their fellow creature friends and food chain...the entire american political, economic system, with it’s huge stock of WMD’s should be prosecuted by the planet’s people. We have treated Earth like a shit-house!

  13. Zionist aggressions increased by 220% after Annapolis..."Uruknet"

Well, let have another round of applause for such success that comes from these kinds of meetings.

  14. Look, another great harm coming from animal agriculture: http://gothamist.com/2008/02/01/bagel_prices_ba.php

The price of wheat driving up bagel prices, likely as a result of increased meat consumption and the wheat needed to feed livestock! When will people learn? Don’t kill animals for food, and don’t get beteen a New Yorker and his bagel!

  15. I realize these figures might not be accurate enough for people, such as american stockbrokers, evening news anchormen, etc., but I’ll accept them as conservatively stated.

    2 MILLION WIDOWS
    - 47% of Iraqis live in ABJECT POVERTY.
    - 4 MILLION Iraqis are in urgent need of FOOD ASSISTANCE NOW
    - 2/3 of Iraqi children have NO ACCESS to DRINKING WATER

  16. I liked “a pair of superficial, posturing conservatives selling highly similar political packages using different emotional strategies” for its elegant description of the bloody obvious. Honestly though, I could do without the dick-thing posturing examplified in JOS’s chosen quote. Doesn’t that just perpetuate the bullshit the commentator is supposedly railing against?

I also appreciated your article Mickey, as someone who has some regard for science as a method of finding out about the universe it royally pisses me off that some experimenters/torturers get to pass off their ability to switch off their emotions (and logic!)as “science”.

Joe, its difficult to negotiate peace when the only party with any interest in a peace settlement is barred from attending your PR bash. Hamas’ last offer.

  17. Hey I couldn’t stomach watching any debates this week or reading much coverage about them, but I caught some headline to the effect that Billary and Barack were cordial with each other, yet drew sharp distinctions with each other.

Could that be true? I don’t mean the cordiality, I mean the sharp distinctions.

  18. And hello to JOS, Joe of Maine, James and Mew who have commented since I called in last.

Here is a very good article on Obama even if it is a year old:

We are having a pleasant summer day in Daylesford, and I hope all you expendables and the Cool Observer and Michele have a very good weekend - in spite of everything.

    Bye till Monday,
    Helga

  20. Mew (#16)...you’re right of course.  It’s a pretty sexist remark...what does it say about my own subconscious prejudices that I laughed out loud when reading it?  The basic point however is accurate...Obama will not be a champion of true change.
