Al Capone sends his love...
The story goes that Bugs Moran over slept that morning 79 years ago or else he would have gotten it too...of course, Moran had been trying to kill Capone since 1925, so who can blame him for trying to return the favor?
Happy Valentine’s to all.
Posted by JOS on from a stone's through from Capone's old neighborhood 02/14 at 08:20 AMOh man I can’t wait-- http://www.whitecastle.com/valentinesday/
Well actually we’re both going to the dentist today.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 02/14 at 11:04 AMHey, every day is a massacre at White Castle.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/14 at 11:33 AMA candlelit dinner there would really touch out hearts… and our arteries.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 02/14 at 11:35 AMThat’s why I’ll bypass that option…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/14 at 11:36 AMOne of my grandmothers went on a blind date with Melvin Purvis the G-man. She said he was boring....
Happy Valentine’s Day… or Happy Aphrodite’s Day!

Gotta love it that Cinema Village East is screening Land of the Dead today:

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/14 at 12:35 PMGreat post today, MZ: the mob, balloon hats, a Ward interview, and my favorite Dylan tune (excellent production and it was timely).
Anniversary Massacre: ‘The Social History of the Machine Gun’ is a book that slipped through the doctrinal cracks. Well worth reading, especially on colonial power and the run-up to the carnage of WWI. http://tinyurl.com/3yvwxo There’s a chapter on SMG’s that includes Capone’s work.
Balloon Hats: Steve Martin’s “Born Standing Up” is a great one for comedy fans.
The Mob: sending soldiers back to France in barrels? Someone needs to tell the descendants of the Sicilians that nonviolence is the only thing that will make the French behave nine hundred years ago.
I haven’t had any slow loads of the page, MZ. Linux is a must for PC users, though I keep Windows in a partition ‘cause some places still only speak Microsoft (Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird are *required* to help avoid security issues with Windows). And Google is definitely a problem - try Scroogle instead http://scroogle.org/
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 02/14 at 12:47 PMThanks, Zen. On your recommendation, The Social History of the Machine Gun just shot to the top of my to-read list. First, I’m finishing a book about grief, dying, loss, love, and all that. Tough read but somewhat helpful.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/14 at 01:05 PMMickey,JOS,Zen,James,Robert, and all...hugs to you on this day.
Ahhh, hearts and flowers to you, Mickey for the Churchill masterpiece. It’s a good one. I would print it out and put it under my pillow tonight but my brand new printer does not work. I gives me the Blue Screen of Death and will not print. Something to do with a driver or installation glitch, maybe. HP should send me a big Valentine to compensate for the lousy products they sell. joe was right about HP printer installations.
Speaking about those who deviate from the normal legal/illegal activities. When I was a kid, I had a job in the garment industry. This was while I was going to college at night. One of my college friends was a reporter with the local paper. I was a VERY dedicated employee - always going beyond the call of duty. My friend and I worked together to do a BIG feature article about the company I worked for. When our masterpiece was finished, I went into work and told my boss. I expected congratulations and a raise in pay. Instead, my boss’s face turned white with fear. He told me to never mention my “big” story to anyone. I didn’t understand why. Seems that the president of the company was a Mr.Pomerantz. He seemed like a very nice man to me. Anybody remember Murder Inc.? How was I to know. My article was very complimentary and said only positive things. Seems that the mob did not want any publicity. I was just a kid and I didn’t know anything about mob connections to the garment industry.
Posted by RMJ on from Mickey Z 4 Prez Hdqts 02/14 at 05:09 PMTV notes...I didn’t watch the Grammys but did happen to see the few minutes that Herbie Hancock was playing Rhapsody in Blue. It was really amazing.
Also...I don’t know if dog shows are good for dogs. Somehow I think that the dogs are being exploited and should go on strike but the beagle that won sure was cute.
Also...Oprah did it again yesterday. She and Suzie Ormann did the whole program about a woman who only gets $2000/month for herself and her children. The program talked about the desperate situation the woman was in. Many families that I know live on much less than $2000/month. Oprah and Suzie need to get in touch with reality.Posted by RMJ on from Mickey Z 4 Prez Hdqts 02/14 at 05:33 PMAnybody want a job in Washington???????
WORK AT SOA WATCH: School of the Americas Watch is hiring for the Development & Operations Coordinator and Communications Coordinator positions to be based in Washington, DC. Salary is negotiable, and there are opportunities for skills development.Posted by RMJ on from Mickey Z 4 Prez Hdqts 02/14 at 05:48 PMHi RMJ. While I can’t offer any useful advice about your printer, I do know someone who might be interested in the SOA Watch gig. I’ll forward him the link ASAP. Thanks.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/14 at 06:06 PMHappy Valentine’s Day wherever you are, Mickey, JOS, James, Robert B. Livingston, Zen Prole, and Rosemarie - I believe there are still some four hours to go, whereas down under we are 16 hours ahead of the eastern US
And Mickey #11: ‘First, I’m finishing a book about grief, dying, loss, love, and all that. Tough read but somewhat helpful.’ I hope the book does help you. Am reading a great book about depression at the moment: ‘The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression’ by Andrew Solomon. That is quite helpful in my case.
Re Rosemarie’s #14: does the SOA need a watch!! Does it ever ..
Good afternoon/night!

Just want to share the e-mail that I received from HP Super techs. Notice that the HP Super techs are having tech problems themselves and need some tech support…
“Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
Rosemarie, I would like to acknowledge that this email is being sent to you later than we would have liked; we’ve had some technical difficulties that have slowed down our response time considerably. Most of the time we respond to emails within an hour or less, depending on the complexity of the problem. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by this delay.
I understand from your mail that you receive an BSOD error while installing the All-in-one software for your HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One and unable to print. I truly apologize for the inconvenience caused....”
