Gandhi at the Beach
Ghandi’s always confused me, and yeah I agree, Kierkegaard is tough to understand, in fact he said early on that one of his goals was to make people’s lives more difficult, presumably in an attempt to encourage them to grow spiritually/religiously and intellectually.
Speaking of religious figures who encourages as much misunderstanding as possible, it stinks today, there’s nothing on NY1 news but pope coverage. How is this possible, I though he burst into flame if he was out in daylight for too long.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 04/16 at 11:35 AMHello Expendables. It’s getting sunnier and warmer with each passing day.
So, what’s with the dearth of action around here? I’ve seen some cameo appearances by James, Joe, Zen, and Helga...but what about RMJ, JOS, etc.?
Maybe captcha has the answer: tax
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/16 at 12:39 PMHi James, Mickey, and all… Sorry for the absence. Too much going on for me to keep up. Among other things - catching up on home repairs since the storm. This has involved a lot of heavy physical work. I had to hire help but did some things myself to keep the cost down. I think maybe I have been doing too much. Now I have a little bit of a medical situation. Yesterday I realized that my blood pressure which is always perfect, now is extremely low, shortness of breath, etc ??? No time to go to the doctor, so I will check Dr. Google.
On the brighter side - A civic group has organized a community-wide celebration honoring my Mother. She is the oldest resident in her area (in Pennsylvania). Her 97th birthday is nearly here, May 3rd.
Later.......Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/16 at 01:36 PMRMJ: I am doing a talk on May 3. It’s funny because I asked for May 2 and only reluctantly agreed to switch to the following day. Now, I realize what an honor it will be to stand up and speak my mind and heart on your Mom’s b’day.
Good luck with your repairs and your health…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/16 at 01:57 PMThank you for saying that, Mickey. My family is honored to have you as an “adopted” brother. Your May 3rd talk is sure to be just one, in a long stream of hits.
My previous info was wrong. The celebration will be on Friday. Below is part of the announcement that I received.
“...Mom has been selected by the Luzerne County Historical Society “as the oldest resident of your community”; she will be honored at the Historical Society’s 150th Annual meeting next Friday at the Westmoreland Club at 5:30 (dinner?) . She will he honored for “your life, memories, and experiences” and presented with a certificate. “...We proudly wish to recognize you that evening for your longevity and endurance in our community.”
Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/16 at 02:10 PMOkay, then I’ll just honor the whole weekend because Sunday, May 4 is my parents’ wedding anniversary. #51. The first on without my Mom around.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/16 at 02:45 PMSounds good, Mickey. We can designate the week-end of May 3-4 as official “Hug-a-parent-week-end”. For those who can’t hug their own parent, they can hug someone else’s.
Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/16 at 04:55 PMJust can’t understand why people have to litter everywhere - was my first thought when I laid eyes on your latest entry, Mickey!
And hi, James and Rosemarie (all best for you and for your Mum). The ‘hug-a-parent-week-end’ sounds like a good idea - my Mum is still alive after the severe stroke at the end of July 2007 but confined to her bed. My Dad is sharing a room with her at a very good home where they are both looked after 24/7.
It is a sunny autumn day and although the mornings are cold, a pleasant 72F are expected later today.
Take care, all of you!
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 04/16 at 07:49 PMI can’t post during the work day due to weird Internet protocol and such…
I missed today dearly because of the mention of BUK and the wonderful poems within the related link.
I wish RMJ had been around for the last few days to help me defend against the atheistic lambasting I have undergone without support.
Great poem Mick. Good night.
Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 04/16 at 10:34 PMLast post was about stray dogs, this one is about humanity being a sea of filth…
Here is a link to some bastard who starves stray dogs in public for fame and fortune. This scumbag’s name is Guillermo Vargas Habacuc. I want to not believe it’s true what he does…
Posted by Keir on from 04/17 at 07:52 AMKeir..10..You’re correct, he is a scumbag..he should be shot!
Posted by joe of maine on from 04/17 at 09:14 AMGo Forth ‘n’ Subdue The Earth Dept: The ocean used to be the symbol of limitlessness, something beyond the scope of the human mind to fully comprehend, let alone control. Now, it’s been brought to heel - fish almost gone, dead zones, trash everywhere - and h. sapiens still has a perception problem.
Seeing trash in the outdoors makes me wild.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 04/17 at 09:15 AMYes, I heard about that guy starving dogs mentioned in this one here about the guy who makes those metal sculptures in the subway who shot a dog 30 years ago and still pleads for the public’s forgiveness…

Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 04/17 at 11:36 AMHello Expendables. It almost feels like summer here today.
While the veracity of the starving dog story is not 100% determined, perhaps the greatest indictment of all is that I have no sense of shock when a human performs such a heinous act. It’s par for the course, as they say.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/17 at 11:41 AMWell also from Gothamist is stories like this:
http://gothamist.com/2008/04/17/the_city_birder.phpAnd then there’s people who can barely see what they’re typing for all the cat-sneeze mess on the computer screen and the dander lodged in between the keys. Need to go to Staples and get one of those keyboard dust-blower things. Also need a job.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 04/17 at 12:18 PMPrice of gasoline up 14 cents in 2 days, record oil profits and payoffs to stockholders, cost of living rising by the second...I think any day we can expect the latest book about How to Live on 49 cents a year. The author will be someone who never made less than a 6 digit salary, inherited 60 million bucks from his rich bi-sexual aunt and has apartments on 3 continents. I can’t wait to read his advice.
Posted by joe of maine on from 04/17 at 02:10 PMGreetings to everyone…
Glad to see Keir has returned.JOS...I am here and I did see your comment a while back. Don’t let the other guys get you down. You and I know that they can’t prove what they say but if we tell them that it will hurt their feelings. Some atheists tend to be very sensitive. It kind of reminds me of the way that the moderators managed last night’s debate. George and the other one focused on trivial nothingness, while ignoring issues of war, peace, economic survival, health care, etc. Did anyone else see the moderators making an issue of why Obama was not wearing a flag pin ! And about Obama’s use of the word “bitter” in reference to people in small towns in Pennsylvania. I am one of the “bitter” people from a small town in Pennsylvania. “Bitter” is too mild. I progressed from “bitter” to “mad-as-hell” a long time ago.
Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/17 at 03:57 PMMickey, thanks for that link (#14), and good point about shock. I have special and utter hatred for people who call art what is really open violence against animals. Even when it’s supposed to make some convoluted point. Makes me sick. I guess I have seen enough of it to believe this story, not that I want to.
But I always find this sort of thing shocking. It’s what keeps me young.
Hello to RMJ and all.
Posted by Keir on from 04/17 at 04:51 PMHmmm...I could sure use something to keep myself young.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/17 at 04:57 PMRMJ, Mickey...I felt young yesterday morning...I was standing at the edge of a field, where the field met the woods. Coming up the hill toward the field was a Fox. He was so involved with sniffing, hunting I guess, he was not aware of my presence. He came to within 60 feet of me, I coughed, he looked up and ran away. The fox was a golden color with a black face. Seeing this Fox, being a Fox helped me feel young. I don’t think the Fox ran away because of my appearance, I had a very nice coat on and apparently Fox didn’t smell my coffee and cigarette. I’m fortunate to have this kind of environment. So the message here is drink coffee, smoke and be young????
