Charles: Michele and I are hoping to stop by the post-parade stuff at Washington Square Park. Perhaps I’ll dress as an aging, obscure writer.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/16 at 04:17 AMHi Mickey, Charles, JOS…
richie ... I think about Kent State often. Those images are seared into my memory. It seemed so shocking at the time. I remember breaking down in tears when I first saw the news clips. Now so many have become desensitized.Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/16 at 03:53 PMI agree, RMJ. Today, Kent State would result in another yellow ribbon sticker being slapped onto the SUV to show support for the brave heroes who fought off the dangerous college evildoers.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/16 at 04:22 PMYep, Mickey. You are right. Yesterday C-span aired the Progressive Caucus Hearings on the war. Iraq Vets Against the War testified. If everyone could hear what they said, it would have an impact. The troops, some of them Marines, testified about how they killed civilians over and over again. The level of sadism was remarkable. Every parent should be aware of what they said about military training and how the taboo against killing is overcome so quickly -in a matter of days during basic training - exactly the way I remember it and the way that Tim McVey accurately described it in his book.

Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/16 at 05:16 PMEdgar L. Jones, a former US war correspondent in the Pacific during WWII, wrote in the Atlantic Monthly: “What kind of war do civilians suppose we fought anyway? We shot prisoners in cold blood, wiped out hospitals, strafed lifeboats, killed or mistreated enemy civilians, finished off the enemy wounded, tossed the dying into a hole with the dead, and in the Pacific boiled flesh off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts, or carved their bones into letter openers.”
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/16 at 05:18 PMMickey, some of the comments on the link in # 10 show what we have become, just as you describe in # 11. Reminds me of your front page here recently when you asked about being ashamed to be an American.

Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/16 at 05:26 PMOn the contrary, what we’re describing seems to make most Americans proud.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/16 at 05:53 PMI really like your poem, Mickey, but then I like everything I see on this site.
And thanks for reminding us of Kent State University in May 1970, Richie!
Hello to the other expendables JOS, Charles and Rosemarie - from a cool and wet Daylesford.
