Independence Day, Land of the Free, and all that crap
Let me be the first to fully appreciate The Land Of The Free on CO. Today. Sorta.
Hatin’ on the History: the museum at Manzanar has a guest book, and next to the entries with a clue or some compassion were the Great Patriotic Haters, easily identified by train wreck spelling ambushed by non-sequiturs. “Remember Battan!” - LCpl, USMC
Know Thyself: the link to Mouth! is timely, MZ, and so is The Ragged Edge. Gotta read up on these as I prepare to step further out of the closet of disability. The up-side is that being disabled is a fast track to becoming radicalized in America; few things smarten you up as fast. I’m a cinch at passing for generic American, but boy does it make my stomach churn and mind bend.

Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 07/03 at 02:29 PMI’m just happy that I have finished working my ass off for the company that currently owns a significant amount of my time today and have three days off in a row...4th or July? Who cares...it’s a day off. I see with my paycheck this week that I paid off all of my bills and have barely enough to make it to the next one...as usual! Happy freedom and independence day everybody.
Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 07/03 at 04:00 PMHello Expendables. Here’s a little more on disability issues:
http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Jan05/MickeyZ0124.htmPosted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/03 at 05:13 PMSince you mentioned animals locked in laboratories, I thought I’d share this little gem:
“Deep down, I truly hope that oppression, torture and murder return to each uncaring human tenfold. I hope that carnivores suffer heart attacks that kill them slowly, while every man entrenched in fur should suffer an anal raping so horrific that they become disemboweled. Every rodeo cowboy and matador should be gored to death, while circus abusers are trampled by elephants and mauled by tigers. And, lastly, may irony shine its esoteric head in the form of animal researchers catching debilitating diseases and painfully withering away because research dollars that could have been used to treat them was wasted on the barbaric, unscientific practice of vivisection.” Gary Yourofsky
Posted by Charles on from Jersey City 07/03 at 07:04 PMA gem indeed, Charles. I can understand the sentiment. I don’’t always feel that way but I can relate to it.
Anyone else?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/03 at 09:11 PMwell, here’s a big surprise. Turns out Obama might not be the anti-war candidate:

Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 07/03 at 10:17 PMExcellent post, Mickey! The Australian equivalent of Independence Day is ANZAC Day btw which is celebrated on 25 April each year (ANZAC = Australia and New Zealand Corps) with lots of parades around the nation and (unfortunately) ever-growing crowds of spectators. 25 April 1915 was the date of the attempted invasion of Turkey at Gallipoli by British, Australian and New Zealand troops and the so-called ‘Anzac myth’ has been gaining momentum. My thoughts very much resemble yours, Cool Observer.
And hello, Zen Prole, JOS and Charles from a cool but dry Daylesford.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 07/04 at 12:10 AMHello Helga...and everyone else. I just added a little Coney Island fun to the main post.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/04 at 08:13 AMHi Mickey, Helga, Zen, Charles JOS, and all…
Mickey...about 75 years ago, my parents went on their one day Honeymoon to Coney Island.
JOS...Yep, Obama has been saying all along that he will increase the size of the military.
Sometimes it’s not the government that is at fault. In Burlington, Vt a group of citizens is still trying to get AlJazerra off their cable line-up. They say that that channel is ‘unpatriotic’. The cable company up there is owned and operated by the government.
Any Rod Sterling fans out there? All night and day ‘The Twilight Zone’ was on. I only caught a glimpse because I was outside most of the time. Great weather up here today.
Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/04 at 05:32 PMHi RMJ-- I’ve been trying to resist doing nothing but watch Twilight Zone all day. Awhile ago was one with Buster Keaton in one about time travel.
Okay, here’s a video about the Muppets and the 4th of July, maybe enough to warm the most cynical heart, not sure:

And I got that Howard Zinn graphic novel, fantastic, of course.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 07/04 at 08:19 PMHello Expendables...from overcast Astoria. I too watched some Twilight Zone and here’s Bill Blum to serve as our Rod Serling:
