The Cool Observer Interview: Mickey Z.
Morning all
Nice answers. i like the one for number 3 and the number 10 one seems very true. More true every day in fact.

Posted by michael from not scotland on 03/13 at 06:23 AMThanks, Michael.
I have seven sets of Expendable answers ready to run. I just don’t wanna run them one after another, so it’ll take a little time. Plus, I’m hoping others will add their voices.
Did you check out the Expendable video at the top?
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/13 at 06:31 AMdon’t have time
will be back online in about 8 hours and will look then.
and BTW, we might well all be f*cked. Except the starfish ;)

Posted by richie from st james city fl on 03/13 at 06:40 AMI like answer #4. The best work he’s done was a bit part in Jon Favreau’s “Made.” No matter how godlike, Jimmy Page still has some splainin’ to do. http://tinyurl.com/ce9z6n
Rand Illusion: Stephen Colbert’s “The Word” for March 11th is priceless http://tinyurl.com/crwjk4
P(e)arting Ways Dept: Though 2112 is great stuff, I’ve never understood Neil Peart’s attraction to Ayn Rand. It’s always been unreadable, sophomoric nonsense. (Rush just released their Retrospective 3 collection, getting some notice for remixed Vapor Trails tracks.)
Can’t wait to see the other interviews.
Posted by Zen Prole from Back To Earth on 03/13 at 09:22 AMHey Zen. I agree, re: the Jimmy Page vid. It’s just another reminder that hip hop and rock had one and only one good pairing: Aerosmith and Run DMC.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/13 at 10:20 AMok, watched the expendable video and have only one comment [I am a bastard!] and its friday night so i want a bit of fun…
Anyone who didn’t understand the word ‘expendable’ is also highly unlikely to understand the phrasal verb ‘show up’ also.
Phrasal verbs are one of the hardest things in the english language. If you ever meet one of these pompous pricks that talks about the glory of the english language being its precision [i have met some, you probably haven’t] then tell him from me that he is talking a fat pile of steaming shite. I know because i have taught english for a long time.
Posted by michael from not scotland on 03/13 at 01:07 PMHi Mickey, michael, Zen, and all…
richie #4...you and I are orphans in need of love and adoption.
Posted by RMJ from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 03/13 at 01:23 PMP.S. About the meeting with the Congressman. I refused to kiss his ring and he refused to do anything to support Single Payer. Does that make us even?
There are plans underway in Vermont (maybe nationally) to have a big sickout on May 1st. Everyone is encouraged to stay home from work and rally for Single Payer on that day.
Posted by RMJ from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 03/13 at 01:28 PMWhat means: I’m with michael, except I thought ‘party’ wouldn’t translate so well.
Revolution #9: Rep. Welch is on record as supporting universal health care. He needs to know medical treatment isn’t car insurance. Someone should read him his rights, then take them away.
Posted by Zen Prole from Grammar Zone on 03/13 at 02:29 PMWhat mean Expendable = great find MZ. Your food answer was a cop-out though. Give us an answer!
Zen (#5) I loved watching Colbert trash Atlas Shrugged. Almost as much as I enjoyed Jon Stewart sucking the blood out of Jim Cramer last night. But I wish he’d smack around some of the people he fawns over too.
RMJ, you got it: political types are as irrelevant to us as we are to them. Thing is, if we work as hard to make things good as they do to make them bad, we can’t be ignored. But they can.

Warm greetings to Michael, richie, Zen Prole, Rosemarie, keir and, last but as always not least, the Cool Observer himself. All best for the upcoming weekend,

Posted by richie from ST JAMES CITY FLORIDA .. dockin' on 03/13 at 03:36 PMI wanted to slide in a question but came back too late to do it.
You know, that good old time travel hypothetical. If you were granted a time travel device and were able to change one thing about the “time line” we are currently trapped in what would it be?
K#11 is correct your food answer is a cop out.
I also wanted to ask you (list aside) what are your top 3 sources of protein?
Posted by Y? from terrortown on 03/13 at 04:17 PMQuestion for Ritchie!
You seem like a nice enough cat but why all the disjointed shouting in caps man?
It makes you seem earnestly psychotic.Posted by Y? from on 03/13 at 04:21 PMI second Keir and Youngfox-- why would you give such a cop-out answer? Do you never make any fancy vegan recipes at all? Living simply is one thing, but blandly is another and that’s not how I think of you…
Posted by James from Hell's Kitchen on 03/13 at 04:21 PMHi Helga...News is reporting a big oil spill in your part of the world.
Brother richie...I am proud to be your sister.
Keir...too bad that the politicians control the purse strings.
Zen...You do good work. Your research about the Congressman is correct. I wish you could have been here today. The Congressman was very anxious to ‘silence’ me, after I reminded him of the 18,000 who die. His dem idea of universal care is such a scam. I also reminded him that he should follow the money on the switch to electronic medical records.
Posted by RMJ from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 03/13 at 04:26 PMWow...what an aggressive bunch. Suddenly, an honest answer is a “cop-out” and simple meals are “bland.” We eat salads, stir-fry dishes, pasta with tomato sauce, and the occasional veggie burger. Mostly, I graze all day: a piece of rye toast, fruit, etc. None of it is bland and none of it qualifies as an answer to a question about time-consuming recipes. The most advanced dish I’ve tried somewhat recently was a vegan “corned beef and cabbage” on last St. Patty’s Day. I did it to mark the first St. Pat’s Day without my Mom...but not this year.
As for protein, any balanced, plant-based diet has more than enough protein so I don’t really know how to differentiate enough to answer Youngfox’s question.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/13 at 04:33 PMSorry MZ,
I did not mean to come off as aggressive with questions/statements.
All were asked with the intent of kind regard.
I figured you would come back with something acerbically good-natured.Same goes for the Ritchie question. No need to answer man, my expendability is always mottled with brevity, froth and that stuff that paves the road to “hell”.
Posted by Y? from on 03/13 at 04:49 PMAw c’mon, YF. You know me better than that. You guys ribbed me and I ribbed back. My original answer is 100% sincere. I simply don’t make any meals that take a lot of time to prepare. After all, I need as much time as I can get to reply to all the comments here, right?
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/13 at 04:53 PMyou mean someone isn’t behaving seriously here?
Posted by michael from not scotland on 03/13 at 05:42 PMWe may have to call for Rambo.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/13 at 05:49 PMok then
Why don’t we all jump in with ‘I am sorrys’
I am sorry I can be a bit bizarre at sometimes but if what mickey said in his recent interview about enjoying each others company is here then surely we can all put up with it.
my problem [or one of] for example is the same reason i am making all these starfish references.
When i find out a fact like the one i did today [see previous mickey post for link] i am just OBSESSED with it for a few days. I was so obsessed by this one i made a stupid picture to go with it.
I don’t know if you use the same expression in the USA. It essentially means ‘if you think you are strong enough then come and fight me asshole”
Posted by michael from not scotland on 03/13 at 05:58 PMI hear you, Michael. It’s a daily navigation here. I sometimes take time to craft what I consider to be a masterpiece of a blog post and then no one comments or those that do simply create a great conversation that has nothing to do with my post. So, if anyone makes a brilliant comment and no one specifically replies, take heart. We’re all in the same boat.
That said, I propose a death match: Rambo vs. the Starfish.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/13 at 06:02 PMwell its great you have on ongoing and ever-developing conversation at your place.
something to cherish. really. but i know you know that.

Glad you wrote that comment, I have the same problem. I have taught English for about ten years, on and off, now.
Here in China, I’m always hearing people (other teachers and ex-pats) banging on about how English is ‘the beautiful language’ or how Chinese is limited and hence limits the thought of the locals or whatever. It’s like they’ve been brought forward in time from 1890 and dumped here.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 03/13 at 06:37 PMandy - yup
to add to it
the americans are simplifying the english language [not by spelling so much as eliminating the present perfect tense and irregular verbs] which you may consider a good or bad thing according to your wont.
personally i am have been studying long and hard for a book about ‘scots’ which is NOT a dialect of english.
basically old anglo-saxon english and scots arrived in britain at the same time. they were two diverse languages at the origin.
people in scotland now speak 75% english with an accent and 25% old scots.
however they are taught in school that scots is vulgar and a bastardisation of english which simply isn’t true.
i have so much more to say about this but i hop andy you can read the article with the link below here and give me your opinion…
“Language is memory and metaphor”
Posted by michael from not scotland on 03/13 at 06:44 PMWhat the hell is Run DMC ?
I like simple meals also Mickey. Pulling a carrot out of the ground, rinsing and eating it. Great fun and very pretty to look at.
Posted by joe of maine from Astoria on 03/13 at 06:46 PMi wrote two versions of last post and didn’t integrate properly
“I am have been” was a change in sentence that wasn’t properly deleted.
and i didn’t mean anglo-saxon, i meant saxon.
Posted by michael from not scotland on 03/13 at 06:57 PMI love that Expendable clip. It’s one of my few favorites I have saved on youtube. There’s a set of interviews on the DVD of Rambo II. One of them is with the Asian actress who plays Rambo’s girlfriend in the movie. She said that, to this day, she’ll be walking down the street or pumping gas in her car and someone will shout out to her, “You’re not expendable.”
Posted by Charles from Jersey City on 03/13 at 07:10 PMthat Bert & Ernie video is dope.
Barney freaks me out...I always try to convince myself that I would not have liked it as a kid.
I think that keeping things simple is the best way to live. great comments today. great answers to The Cool Observer Interview, Mick. michael took the words right out of my keyboard in #26. RMJ, “I also reminded him that he should follow the money on the switch to electronic medical records,” you kick ass. There is nothing worse than a politican...even Maxine Waters is in on the schemes.

Read your language post. Yeah, I see Keir’s point about the evolution of languages and their rise and fall. I reckon in the age of competing nations it’s important sometimes for marginalized peoples to clarify and keep to traditional languages as a way of staying alive.
Ngugi Wa Thiongo swore off English right after ‘Decolonising the mind’. To prove the point.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 03/14 at 12:11 PMThanks, JOS
richie...eccentric is good. On my wall I have a sign that says, “They all laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at them because they are all the same.”
The spirit of Gordon Gecco lives on.
In case you missed it - Our friend Larry Summers sez - “...In remarks to a private dinner at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Summers was even blunter, according to an attendee: “Before, we had too much greed and too little fear. Now, we have too much fear and too little greed.”
Posted by RMJ from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 03/14 at 12:42 PMThanks everyone, for a great thread. I just put up a new post filled with factoids to cheer you up. By Sunday night or Monday morning, we’ll see the next set of interview answers.
