  2. Simple but it bares repeating ...

All modern societies have the knowledge, be it wisdom or back up by hard science, that trees are the lungs of the planet and a key part of our life system ...

... and yet they are allowed to be cut down with abandon by the national powers and political bodies.

Jensen is right, the culture is insane.

  3. Also, I mailed the PETA China peeps with a proposal for a benefit show and shoot today. So lets see what happens.

  6. Thanks, all. I certainly didn’t mean to overshadow an important topic like trees with Yankee talk but as I well know, we’ll hash it all out here as the day progresses.

Andy: Please keep me posted. This could be a future article, if you and the others are interested.

  7. I loved that Tarzan link.  It occurred to me that I’ve never seen that movie.

Even if corporations replaced every tree they cut down, James Lovelock pointed out that it’s a wasted effort because you’ve destroyed that ecosystem and that takes forever to re-establish.  We need to keep the trees we already have.

And go Yankees.  Anyone going to the parade tomorrow?  I used to work in the Wall Street area during the last Yankees parade.  My buddy and I would sneak out of the office and walk up and down the parade route drinking liquor in brown paper bags.  Man, times have changed.

  8. Oh, and happy Guy Fawkes day.

  9. The sky will be red with all the blasts and explosions! Kapow! Kablamo! I don’t know why they celebrate Guy Fawkes on the Af-Pak border, but I’m sure the show’ll be amazing.

  10. Hello again. With 80% of the world’s forests gone and replanting not the answer...it’s a bit of an uphill battle, huh?

As for the Yanks, I’m not much a parade person. I can recall getting out of high school to go to the 1978 parade: Reggie, Munson, Guidry, etc. It was a zoo back then. Now, it’s high security like Times Square on New Year’s Eve. (No brown bag drinkers invited.) Not sure if I wanna deal with any of it. Might just savor the win in a more mellow way.

    You going, Charles?

Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria  on  11/05  at  01:19 PM
  11. Oh, I’m going.  The only question is whether I camp out for the night.  That’s what my brother wants to do.

  12. If you take photos, send some to me, okay? Maybe I could post a couple here?

Also, check out Tarzan and His Mate. Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane is worth the price of admission.

  13. Interesting Yankee history:

  14. Save the Fish, Save the Trees Dept: in a recent talk, David Suzuki noted that to grow to heroic heights, northwest fir trees required a sort of nitrogen not locally available. It used to come from the ocean via the salmon that came back to spawn. So, that about wraps it for huge trees, y’all. Maybe we can do better with the other sorts.

Latest in a Series Dept: this year’s World Series was fun to watch, with the teams mostly matched (including the weak middle relievers). #13 is a good link, and I agree with 2009 being a good but not great or historic Yankee team. Matsui was a shoo-in for MVP, even before his first AB last night. His swing is a work of art.

Field of In Your Dreams Dept: So now they pay the city back for that stadium, yes?

  15. Good Times article.  The video on your front page has been removed by MLB.  But here is a video of last night’s final play as called by Harold Mosokowitz, aka John Sterling.  Did you know that was his real name?

  16. Hey Zen.

Just switched the video. Thanks, Charles.

  17. Ha, now that video is down as well.  Good to know MLB is on top of this.  If only people were as proactive with cutting down trees.

That was my way of tying the discussion together.

  18. Nice, Charles. Smooth.

I’ll try to find another video.

  19. Charles that’s a telling comment.

If powerful companies and political bodies were as quick, thorough and ruthless in protecting the environment as when they protect their ‘interests’ then we’d all be fine.

Question: How is an environment that supports your life not an ‘interest.’?

  20. Thanks, all. A new post is up: 2 new articles I hope you’ll read and vote for.
