Take a Brooklyn staycation
Why avoid the sentience angle in your celebration of turkeys article? This is the most important reason to not eat turkeys. They have nervous systems, brains, and feel just like any animal does, and our Golden Rule says that we should treat them with respect, and avoid any unecessary suffering, because they are just like us.
None of those 12 reasons really make me want to not eat them, and I’m a vegan!
I think sentience and moral impact, environmental impact, and health impact, would top that list (in that order).Posted by Evan from new paltz on 11/06 at 12:17 PMI didn’t “avoid” it, Evan. It’s an angle I’ve written about plenty of times so I took a lighter approach. In fact, a teacher just e-mailed me to say she’s using this article to teach grade schoolers.

I don’t disagree with you, but about the sentience point. PETA point out that you don’t need to go there, regardless of it’s validity.
It’s especially useful to distill it like this for those insane people who like to argue on the side of the right to cruelty…
... can they suffer ... yes ..case closed, they shouldn’t.
Now for Mickey’s article ... I think he makes a great point about school children. Mickey often takes the blunt truth approach but in the younger learner situation you may want to capture the imagination rather than try stuff that is clear to us but unclear to developing minds.
Posted by Andy from shanghai on 11/06 at 02:32 PMI have another thanksgiving alternative too, nearly forgot ...
F*ck thanksgiving as it’s clearly immoral, free your mind from it and you needn’t have any sort of special meal, in that sense, on the day.
Instead, take one of those staycations and eat out for the day at a nice Vegan Cafe.
Posted by Andy from shanghai on 11/06 at 02:35 PMJust so you know, the Rooftop Farm in Greenpoint closed for the season. I was there a couple of weeks ago. It was really amazing, seeing all that produce being grown amidst the view of the Manhattan skyline.
Went to the Yankees parade today. Brutal. Couldn’t see a thing. I guess I should have camped out overnight. There were so many people, it was suffocating.
Posted by Charles from Jersey City on 11/06 at 05:14 PMI don’t eat birds. And I don’t do thanksgiving. I’ve been off it as long as I’ve been off 4th of july celebrations, and almost as long as I’ve been off mcdonald’s and coca-cola.
I have plenty to be grateful for, and I celebrate it all, and I cook vegetarian meals for friends and family with pleasure...but on my own schedule.
Posted by Keir from here and there on 11/06 at 05:15 PMMarchin’ Up and Down the Square Dept: for a decent view, Charles, you needed the $2,500 tickets.
Staycations are cool. Taking a train or bus somewhere local is also a plus; 3-5 hours on public transport can get you many awesome places.
I’ve renewed my love affair with this local gem: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/
Posted by Zen Prole from Pac NW on 11/06 at 05:20 PMHello again. Well, there’s always unThanksgiving:
http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/mickeyz191105.htmlCharles: A friend of mine sent me photos taken from a high window overlooking the parade and it looked insane. Suffocating indeed.

Posted by Charles from Jersey City on 11/06 at 05:44 PMHi everyone, I could write my entire knowledge of baseball without repeating a letter.
I guess we’ve all heard the reasoning of animals only being alive so we can eat them (they’re bred to live a nice life...for a bit...before we kill and eat them). If you ever hear this line I recommend saying that you agree!!!...and that’s why you bought a male and female labrador..so you could eat the puppies. That isn’t sick or disturbing...because they were only ever bred to be eaten.I’ve also said to people that if I look at a cow’s arse I think..."Why am I looking at a cow’s arse?”...I don’t think “Yum!”
Posted by Rick (the Cartoonist) from England on 11/06 at 06:28 PMUltimately, you have to somewhat know your audience. Some folks respond to moral arguments. Others demand science. Most are motivated by self-interest. And so on.
It’s tricky...but I try.
