Posted by michele from kitchen on 11/26 at 09:01 AMHAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BEAUTIFUL LADY IN THE GYM WHO STOLE MICKEY’S HEART
Hi Mickey and all ... I voted.
About the March of the Toy Soldiers. We have come a long way. Many years ago when I was teaching in NJ, during a Holiday pageant, I had all of the kids dressed as wooden soldiers as they marched to the music. Now I know better. (My socialist friends never use the word ‘march’. They say ‘walk’.) I continue to learn.
Time to say THANK YOU to all who visit here at Mickey’s. Often you make me think. Sometimes I don’t completely agree. Mostly you inspire and elate me. THANK YOU to all of you.
Posted by RMJ from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 11/26 at 11:14 AMA huge thank you right back at both Michele and RMJ.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 11/26 at 11:26 AMAll good wishes for Michele on her birthday. All good wishes for all on Michele’s birthday.
RMJ sez “I continue to learn.” You are a huge inspiration.
I weighed in on thanksgiving in a rare blog post: Thanksgiving Questions. In a lot of ways I wouldn’t have put that text together without the inspiration found in the conversations here. Greetings to all from Budapest!
Posted by Keir from here and there on 11/26 at 11:41 AMHappy birthday, Michele! Hello to Mick, RMJ, Keir and the Expendables.
I am thankful for this site and everyone on it.
Talk to you later…
Posted by JOS from Oak Park on 11/26 at 11:46 AMLoved your questions, Keir...thanks. This one stood out: “What if the culture was not so apocalyptic?”
Hey JOS, make sure you click on the Bronx link in today’s post. I gave your friend’s group a little plug.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 11/26 at 12:08 PMLoved your posting, Keir. Great stuff. A guy I know who works for Food For Life posted this recently on his blog, and it echoes a lot of the comments made here:
The origins of the Thanksgiving celebration are not as blessed as most people think. Thanksgiving is a quintessentially American holiday, so much so that it is not just a holiday, but really is one of our Holy Days, almost universally celebrated by Americans. In its sacredness, families get together to celebrate one genocide (against Native Americans) by committing another (against turkeys). Can we celebrate in good faith and conscience?
On Thanksgiving Day, we give thanks. We give thanks for being the invader, the exploiter, the greedy, the colonizer, the thief, indeed the genocidaire. As Mark Twain points out in his War Prayer, wishing and being thankful for one’s own success and victory is, at the very same time, wishing and being thankful for another’s defeat and destruction. Do we want to make these kinds of wishes and give these kinds of thanks?

Forget about Big Boch, Keir’s Thanksgiving post is a one-man wrecking crew. MZ already posted Burroughs, so I’ll only add the inscription on a statue of a Native American woman: “She gave of her life so the new nation could live.” Chomsky and Loewen have referenced that...I think it’s in New England.
Love the t-shirt link. I used to have the Native American Dept of Homeland Security t-shirt http://tinyurl.com/y87oeas
I saw The Road last night. Very strong, but couldn’t eclipse the novel. One of the better lines was Robert Duvall’s Old Man on the apocalypse: “There were warning signs, but no one listened.”
Bad Taste Dept: happy bird-day, Michele.
Posted by Zen Prole from Pac NW on 11/26 at 05:46 PMKeir, knock-out commentary.
Mickey, I LOVE the shirt! Pass on a Happy Birthday to your wife. Pretty amazing connection in light of Charles’ recent sick day comment.
Our Canadian Thanksgiving comes earlier in the year. My wife and I prefer celebrating the fall harvest and Winter Solstice (our daughter’s birthday!). Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter… have zero significance to me. What I really hate is Earth Day. Live like North American savage beasts for 364 days, and redeem yourself on Earth Day. Can you imagine ancient indigenous cultures celebrating ‘Earth Day’???
Have a great evening everyone.
Posted by Mike from Cariboo on 11/26 at 08:00 PMThanks, Zen and Mike.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 11/26 at 09:36 PMHappy Birthday, Michelle.
Hi everyone.
I’m down with the sniffles as the flu is ripping through Shanghai at the moment and I’m always around bunches of school kids and teens at work.
Still lurking, just a bit muddy up top right now
Andy
Posted by Andy from shanghai on 11/27 at 05:52 AMFeel better, Andy.
A new post is up and, as always, if more of my Planet Green articles go live, I’ll add those links. See you there.
