"Back" to the Future
Mickey poses a good question—as he quite often does—about when “we” supposedly had control of the media. From a totally American perspective Mickey’s question is very pertinent. As I understand it the US media has since its inception been primarily private. Outside of the US it used to be, and still is in some countries, that the media was largely owned and controlled by governments. To the extent that the government is a servant of the people then the media belongs to the people. This supposition is obviously quite untrue though and steamrolling neoliberalism and privatization has seen the media being consolidated into fewer and fewer hands in many countries.
This process needs to be not reversed but revolutionized. A new mode of thinking, as Mickey suggests, is required.
