Back from another flying visit to Melbourne - that’s all we will be able to afford for the next few years. We had a great time in Wellington, NZ, though.

I like the Huxley quote. Another quote that I heard Col David Hackworth make on C-span back in the early 90’s when we started the war was, “In war some people die, and some people get rich.” I can still picture him saying that. It seemed shocking because he was a pro-war member of the military, but one of those in the military who had a more enlightened view than so many of the others.

Comments on returning from a 2 week respite in “Old Europe.”1) Anyone who gets the chance should go to Amsterdam: many cool people, killer weed, and art museums.(A shout out to Dampkring coffeeshop and Tattoo Palace!)
2) Bus drivers, high school kids, and grocery cashiers (who have seats at their registers) on the Continent are better informed than our elected officials, from dog catcher on up.
3) In Berlin, shopping now dominates where The Wall used to. Hmmmm…
4) More than a few people still believe in the traditional American myths. I spent time explaining the decay here, from massive debt to crippling groupthink.
5) People take good food seriously over there, but there’s gastronomic rubbish, too.
6) Dozens of power-generating windmills are scattered across the German countryside. The only thing that would be better is hanging war criminals from them.
7) Liberals are just as dangerous on both sides of the pond.
8) The former East Germans I met are generous, well-educated people.

We have a lot of wind up here where I live but some of the fat cats object to wind mills “because it might ruin the view of the ridge lines”. In the meantime, we have an aging nuclear power plant with a very questionable record of safety and no one has the answer to the problem of long term storage of the radioactive waste.
Also, I agree that high school kids in other countries are better informed than most adults here are. I have seen some Canadian kids being interviewed on TV. The US does not regard it as such most of the time and everyone seems just fine with that (at least here in the US of A.). So I would imagine Principle I of the Nuremberg Tribunal wouldn’t get you very far in the courts if the law is not really the law.
