For Whom Sean Bell Tolls
Good morning Mickey...in 1996 a cop in Brunswick, Maine unloaded 4 rounds into a wheel chaired man.
The reason stated, the man was coming [wheeling] at the cop with a knife. 4 Rounds??? Somethng’s wrong here. I’m not completely certain how the cop side of this was handled. This critter was not charged with being unfit to carry a sidearm...and what cop is since policemen represent some of the craziest people on this planet.
What is the purpose of a policeman? To protect the public from what? What are the sources for crime? How is crime profited from by the film industry, the child rearing industry, the arms industry, a society that is founded on criminal behavior. Who are the cops protecting and how inconsistent is the behavior of law enforcement?...people?
Why are the worst criminals left to commit greater crimes? These are all questions asked numerous times by all of us, sociologists and anyone who has observed america and it’s criminal heros both real and scripted.
Posted by joe of maine on from 04/25 at 12:03 PMOne thing that always strikes me about these cases, and we had the same thing over here with the De Menenzes murder, is people are aghast at the number of rounds fired.* A single head-shot and apparently everyone would be happy. Life is cheap, ammunition is expensive?
Here’s a sidesplitter from the Beeb’s report: After the verdict a spokesman for a police union, Patrick J Lynch, told reporters it proved that police officers could expect “fairness” when in court.*This is absolutely not a dig at you Joe, but you always see it in media reports.
Posted by Mew on from clophill 04/25 at 03:53 PMYou have *got* to be shyteing me. It sounds like 1808, not 2008. For Bell’s survivors, I suspend all judgment for 48 hours, just like the cops get when they gun someone down. Does that make me Jane Harman bait? I’m just funnin’, y’all. It’s just a joke until someone gets hurt. Then it becomes department policy. http://tinyurl.com/27ykxj
Then, this NYPD agility test video. I thought “This looks like 5th grade gym class, without the corpses and jail cells” and “Where’s the trigger exercises?” No sooner imagined than they appeared, snapping out imaginary rounds. Why wasn’t there an ‘overtime dash’ part of the course?
A crisp, cracking fiver for whoever guesses Obama’s response to this outrage...if he even ventures one. Captcha sez ‘leaders,’ and is going on my watch list.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 04/25 at 03:59 PMHello Expendables. All seems surprisingly calm in NYC. Perhaps we’ve reached that point where everyone is so accustomed to being oppressed and abused that nothing will provoke actionable rage. Time will tell…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/25 at 06:38 PM‘License to hunt (and kill)’ indeed, Mickey!
‘Why are the worst criminals left to commit greater crimes?’ Spot-on, Joe of Maine - I remember one of Mickey’s posts where he said that whereas one could go to jail for life for one murder, if one launched a war which ultimately cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives one was considered a ‘strong leader’ or ‘commander-in-chief’.
And hi, Mew and Zen Prole and all those who might comment after us.
Captcha ‘military’. I am soo glad that ANZAC Day is behind us - 364 days to go to the next display of militarism and ‘support for our troops’, wherever they might be, and even if we have been lied into war.

Good afternoon Mickey, joe, Mew, Helga, Zen, and all…
There have been cases like that in Vermont. The police in Brattleboro killed an emotionally disturbed man in church. It’s open season on all of us. They are already using drones and the Active Denial System is designed to put down civilian unrest.
On the brighter side, I watched the Bill Moyers interview last night with Jeremiah Wright. I was really impressed. The Reverend said exactly the same things that Malcolm X and Ward Churchill have said...”...chickens coming home to roost...” etc. If any candidate spoke the way that Wright does, I would vote for him. The interview is available and if there were any “Peace” groups left I would encourage them to show the interview as a fund raiser. Wright is one of the most impressive orators I have ever seen. Like Malcolm and Churchill, Wright has also been receiving death threats. One of his main points was that it is wrong to kill unarmed civilians, especially children. That’s why they want to kill him.

Its hard as a Britisher, brought up in a Church of England school, to comprehend that religion might actually be something significant to everyday life rather than just a bunch of stupid superstitions. As a vague lefty I can get the idea of liberation theology, but I can’t feel it. Still I’ll take a christian who talks sense over any number of, uh, nonsense, talkers…Posted by Mew on from clophill 04/26 at 06:34 PM.........Mick/Zen/Mew/Helga/Joe Joe/RMJ(arbor-beauty)—Soul on Ice .. I really enjoyed listening to Reverend Wright. I never saw the clip that caused so much media indignation (only read about it).
Isn’t it interesting how the clip ends abruptly before discussing Obama and his disavowal of Wright-- do you think that was explored?
I thoroughly endorse Wright’s logic and words. Idolatry is, perhaps, the greatest sin-- and the true root of many of the worst evils.
Posted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco 04/27 at 02:46 AMMew..2..I didn’t take your comment as a dig..I know what you’re saying. Cops existence are simply a symptom of societies without emotional and intellectual equilibrium..and would also include integrity, ethics, real morals...most of the planet I guess is lacking, certainly the u.s. and the people who want to be in control.
