Hair Metal, Big Money, and the 2008 campaign

  1. Not that I can compete with New Jersey’s finest, but he calls to mind Sartre. From Wikipedia (heh):
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_faith_(existentialism)
“Bad faith (from French, mauvaise foi) is a philosophical concept first coined by existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre to describe the phenomenon wherein one denies one’s total freedom, instead choosing to behave as an inert object. It is closely related to the concept of self-deception.”

I don’t know, the SOTU address and the electoral process (sic) bring that whole thing to mind for some reason. Anyway, is it going to be Ralph again next year? Is there really no one else?

  2. David # 30 from last night...Me too. There was no more enthusiastic a flag-waver than I was. I was in my 30s when I finally saw the light. Maybe that proves that there is hope for anyone.

James...I hear that the Socialists are planning on running a candidate but they might nominate one who has so little name recognition that it won’t do any good. I think that support of Ralph would be a good thing, if only to have him included in the debates...and if he is again excluded it would again show the hypocrisy of it all.

Yes, the SOTU was as irrelevant as usual. He first gave a big gift to the insurance companies, followed that with a big handout to the arms dealers by saying the the military should be increased, not only in Iraq. Then followed that with the handout to the oil companies---actually that was announced even before the speech and it caused the stock prices to increase. One interesting thing that he said was that we should increase the number of non-uniformed personnel to go into to other countries and meddle in their affairs. None of the media seems to be picking up on that. Exactly what the world needs, more secret CIA covert types trying to disrupt the affairs of State around the world in an attempt to benefit usa corporations, or as he calls it, usa “interests”. One thing he didn’t say was that the usa slaughtered 650,000 civilians since March 20, 2003.  We need a “Let Ralph Debate Campaign” and we need it to start now.

  3. Speaking about “Big Money”. The AP is reporting about this new weapon system today.  I wrote my article in 2005.

  4. Hello Expendables. Once again, not too cold for January here...but tomorrow should change that.

I have a Sartre line in response to all of the above:
“Once you hear the details of victory, it is hard to distinguish it from a defeat.”

  5. Hey, where is everyone? We had gotten off to such a good Sarte...I mean, start.

Anyway, remember: Iraq is a “mistake”:

  6. Oops...I tripped and sent my military into Iraq and killed a million innocent people.

I am finally getting around to finishing up volume two of Jensen’s Endgame...it provokes a lot of scary thoughts about counterviolence.  Scary because after a while you run out of excuses for sitting around and doing nothing.

  7. Hey JOS…

I’ll say it again: If you only have time to read one book (albeit two volumes), Endgame is it.

  8. Mickey #5...thanks for the link. That news report was written by a friend of mine, Gail. She used to teach at Bennington College.

JOS #6...me too. Every time I think about the usa war against Iraq and how it should be reported in the history books, all I can think of is “OOPS”.

Predictions are that the wind chill will be 35 below tonight and tomorrow. I’m not liking this very much.

  9. I have never been in a Starbucks and have never tasted their coffee but this might be good news for the workers.

  10. RMJ: Tomorrow is supposed to be the coldest day in NYC in two years. As for Starbuck’s, here’s some bad news:

  11. Mickey...thanks for that link. I am glad that I happen to like cheap coffee. My favorite brand is the least expensive in the super market. I never did understand the mystique about Starbucks. Oh well, I guess that anyone who eats dinner over the kitchen sink cannot be classed as a gourmet’.

Yes, It is Hug-your-honey weather. Where’s Mudge?

  12. I feel good about buying organic, fair trade (and delicious) coffee at my local health food store.

As for Mudge, yeah...he has been missing for too long.

  13. “...The press is so powerful in its image-making role, it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. This is the press, an irresponsible press.” . . . . “If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”
“I do not care what points I made in the interview, it practically never got printed the way I said it. I was learning under fire how the press, when it wants to, can twist and slant. If I had said “Mary had a little lamb”, what probably would have appeared was “Malcolm X lampoons Mary”...”

  14. Nice, RMJ. One of my favorite media quotes come from Norman Mailer: “There is an odor to any Press Headquarters that is unmistakeable… The unavoidable smell of flesh burning quietly and slowly in the service of a machine.”

  15. Even this ‘lesser evil person’ cannot help agreeing with you these days, Mickey.  Same old, same old ..

Hi, James, Rosemarie and JOS - and where are all the other expendables?  Still - this expendable is late today.

Here is Greg Palast on the SOTU:

  16. this isnt exactly light reading but there is a lot of very useful information for activists who want to be well-informed in discussions about these matters…
