I think I’m ready to write a memoir because…

  1. Welcome home, Mickey. How’s your Mom? I was beginning to get separation anxiety with no one here today. Now everything’s back to normal.

    I remember when we had an outhouse. I remember when there was no pizza. I remember when it cost 10 cents, plus 2 cents tax to go to the movies. I remember the 10 cent store. I remember when doctors made house calls and could be paid with barter. I remember when stores were closed on Sunday and it was considered to be a “family” day. I remember when I believed that the USA could do no wrong.  I remember when life was good. Then I grew up.

    Just a reminder...today is the anniversary of Operation Ajax.

  2. Hi RMJ. Wow...where is everyone?

  3. I’ll ‘fess up and admit I had to look up Operation Ajax. I knew it happened, just not that that was what it was called...I do have a rather fine book called Psywar On Cuba which gives all kinds of exciting names to all kinds of exciting democracy-enhancing projects…

    I’m too “young” for this, but I’ll have a go -
    I remember when I used to take glass bottles back to shops for a refund; (uncle joe remembers too grin )
    I remember when Maggie smashed the miners (and revealing, as a 4 year old that I was going to vote for her);
    I remember the temperature dropping 10 degrees C;
    I remember milk at school (uncle joe doesn’t, he went to catholic school - milk is boobs and boobs are sin);
    I remember when 16kb seemed like science fiction - and we had it in our house!;
    I remember when there weren’t any fast food joints or supermarkets on the Isle of Wight (my family’s spiritual home);
    ah, thats it. Yeah, progress is a sham to people who have shelter and food.

  4. Hey Mew. Thanks for playing along with us old timers.

  5. Hey Mew and Mickey...I remember when milk came in glass bottles and was delivered to your door, not only milk but also bread. Not only that, it was delivered house to house by horse drawn wagons. Actually that was not so long ago. That’s the way it was in Philadelphia during WW 2.
    I actually remember when General Electric set up its first computer for practical application. I really remember that because I was working there at the time. That’s when we all sat at our desks using slide rules.

  6. I can’t beat you at this game, RMJ.

  7. milk is still delivered in bottles to your door in England, but bread in glass bottles? Goodnight everyone.

  8. Uncle Joe...I was waiting for someone to catch me on that one.

    Mickey...Are you implying that I’m old? On second thought, I guess anyone who was around before pizza was invented would qualify as old. I remember when I had my first slice of pizza at a little hang-out in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. BTW, horses were used during WW2 because of the gas shortages. Actually cars were invented before I was born.

    I remember when milk not only was delivered to your door in glass bottles, but it was milk that did not contain dioxin.

  9. I don’t like to use the word “old,” RMJ, but life before pizza and bread in glass bottles sure beats Mickey Mantle’s last homer.

  10. About puka beads, Mickey...do you mean that they are out of style? I still wear mine.

    Not only life before pizza, but life before they invented beer in a can. I remember when beer only came in glass bottles. Then they invented beer in cans but that was before they invented pop tops, so on Saturday night the guy with the “church key” was very much in demand. I know that you probably had no vices in your youth, Mickey so you probably wouldn’t know about things like that. Hummm, I wonder if beer is a vegetable.

  11. If I ever write a memoir that gets published, you’ll learn plenty about my vices, RMJ.

  12. I can’t even begin to play this game.  I came of age in the ‘80s, and the Reagan years don’t offer much in the way of nostalgia.  There is only the dreadful sense that things have gone from bad to worse.

    On the bright side, I can remember when I was young enough to sit through a George Lucas or Steven Spielberg movie and actually be taken in by their facile sense of wonderment (as opposed to cringing and shaking my head, as I do now).

  13. Welcome, Church Secretary. I like your Lucas/Spielberg reference. Even I am young enough to remember to be suckered in by them. Anyway, if you came of age in the 80s, you remember life before cell phones, e-mail, etc.

  14. I have visited countries where everything is closed on Sunday and milk and bread are delivered to your door Mon-Sat….. very cool! I remember those classic school lunch boxes. It’s very difficult to find those damn things these days. The only thing you can find these days are those friggin’ insulated things. Please tell me why does a child need an insulated lunch box for their peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

    And thank you RMJ for reminding us that today is the anniversary of Operation Ajax.

  15. HI Everyone, Thought I would chime in late then never. It’s been a busy weekend for me.

    Anyone else remember the Sun being more yellow? I swear when I was a lot younger I remember it being a much more a distinctive yellow and not as white as it is now.

    Peace and Love
