Ichiro's in town

  1. I like this guy too, as long as the Yanks keep winning as they (finally) have been lately.

Hideki’s got a pretty good outlook as well.

I wonder if Japanese baseball has a similar steroid problem as we do here?

  2. As a student of Zen meditation, it bugs me when people say “the Zen of. . .,” but Ichiro truly practices the Zen of hitting. People forget, too, he may have the fastest home plate-to-first base speed of anyone who ever played the game.

Regarding your Mother’s Day article and mothers and rock and roll, my mother used to say, “Rock and roll was a religion to you and your brothers.” To this day, it’s hard to get out of a conversation with her about the ills of the world without the name of would-be rocker Brittany Spears mentioned as a root cause. Keep up the good work, Mickey.

  3. Ichiro is a wonderful player to behold. I’m so happy that my hometown team acquired him, and it wasn’t the damn yanks or bosox. He was the only thing that made watching the Mariners bearable last year. Did you see that catch he made last week? Obscene. He may be the most exciting player in baseball, how many other slap-singles hitters lead the league in intentional walks? I truly think that nothing is beyond Ichiro’s scope as a player, that he can accomplish anything in baseball. And yes, his outlook is great, same routine every at-bat, cool, calm, collected.
Of course, baseball is just part of the spectacular society which alienates our relations and commodifies everything.

  4. I’m really glad to hear all the Ichiro talk. While I agree with Jake, in general, about baseball...it does not take away from my ability to appreciate athletic excellence.
