Independence (from oil) Day
Good Morning...a lot going on here today already. Looks like jack, from last night needs a little help in getting accurate information. Thanks for starting that process, Mickey. My message to jack is, if you hang around this site for a while it might help. We are not as bad as you think we are. Some of us are even vets ourselves. jack, maybe you need to read “War is a Racket”. It was written by the highest ranking member of the USMC.
About coal mining. I have not had time to read all you have here but it is a good topic. I grew up in coal country and even back then in the old days strip mining was a hot topic. When I was a kid I could look out my window at the side of a mountain that had been strip mined.
Today is an interesting news day...Cindy and the others on a hunger strike...New Jersey shut down...and even Drudge has an interesting photo of a flag. I hope they keep it on the site all day.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/04 at 06:57 AMI was talking about the photo of the flag in front of the White House. In the past few minutes Drudge has added some less interesting photos.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/04 at 07:05 AMMan, I told you not to put up an interesting post so I won’t get too distracted from my writing goals, but here you go. Oh well. So here’s this silly George Washington cartoon to celebrate today:

Hi RMJ-- I hope that your positive comment makes Jack feel more welcome. No one’s trying to offend or isolate anyone here.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 07/04 at 07:18 AMJames...I know what you mean about things being toooo interesting here today. I had a lot of work planned and am having trouble leaving the computer.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/04 at 07:23 AMHello Expendables...it’s me, the one with all the interesting blog posts. I too have lots to do today but I get the feeling I might be spending a fair amount of time exchanging comments here.
As for “Jack,” I think he might be someone from an army base in Arizona who has been lurking here for some time so it just may be that someone is “trying to offend or isolate.” As RMJ and James say, I’m sure we’d be happy to converse with him but, speaking for myself, I’d need some kind of entry point that doesn’t include being called ignorant and bigoted just because we disagree.
On a lighter note, where’s RT, Keir, Owen, Mew, Cart, Chris, and so many other Expendables?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/04 at 07:33 AMAgreed, RMJ… damn you, Mickey! And thank you.
Haha, captcha says “respect”
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 07/04 at 07:33 AM@ MZ; Present (slowly raises hand at the back of room)
Hellos and howlows to everyone.
If you ask me, I think we Americans need independence from a lot of things in our profit-driven society… So to that end I’ll soberly celebrate today.
I like the Jensen quote. But its the same old broken record, playing the same old verse over and over. Unfortunately, so few of us ever seem to listen (let alone care)...
Here’s a mystery link: http://tinyurl.com/r932w
Posted by RT on from The Buyou City 07/04 at 09:09 AMWelcome, RT...and thanks for the sobering link (no pun intended). Valuable info indeed.
As for Jensen, I agree that it’s a broken record but what I like about him is that he’s not suggesting that what we need is a big enough protest or a Democrat or the repealing a particular law, etc. He’s a big picture guy.
Off-topic: I was just walking home when I passed a U-Haul truck being loaded by some folks who were obviously moving. A young woman emerged from the apartment building carrying a very large lamp and it took every ounce of restraint for me not to ask her: “Hey, you got a light?”
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/04 at 10:54 AMMZ: I appreciate anyone who sees the big picture, Jensen included. Just not sure if I can relate to his vision is all…
On-topic—Howard Zinn on Independence Day: http://tinyurl.com/mfk2e
Re: off-topic—I think I would’ve asked her if she had something heavier to carry…
Anyway, happy 4th, y’all. May the spirit of resistance be awakened from a deep, dark coma…
Posted by RT on from The Buyou City 07/04 at 02:23 PMItaly just won and Astoria is sheer madness. One more match to go.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/04 at 04:55 PMWell, Happy Independence Day, Mickey, Rosemarie, James and RT! I’m off to Melbourne for a few days - as it turns out, I might visit the Big Apple sooner than expected. Here’s hoping that I can then meet Mickey and James.
And Italy just won? That might mean that the final game of the world championship is between Italy and - Germany ..
Ciao/Auf Wiederemailen,
HelgaPosted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 07/04 at 06:59 PMHi folks, and can I wish all the American readers a happy independence day, hopefully one that will see you all freed from some interminable sourge for a while. No idea what I mean, it’s been an odd day.
Posted by Chris Wood on from Manchester, odd wet lovely Manchester 07/04 at 07:02 PMGreetings, all. Just wanted to answer roll call. I’ve been dropping by the site, but I’ve been busy parenting, watching the World Cup, and working, so I haven’t joined in the fun. Sounds like Mother Nature has decided to co-opt the 4th of July fireworks with her own around here. Big thunderstorm rolling through. I much prefer her fireworks, personally.
Nice to know there are some closet World Cup fans around here. Two nice goals in the overtime, thankfully. The penalty kick shootout is the worst.
Posted by Cart on from near Warshington DC 07/04 at 07:59 PMHello Helga, Chris, and Cart...always a pleasure.
I watched the overtime in a local pub filled with crazed Italians (like me, I guess). No one wanted penalty kicks.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/04 at 08:03 PMSo how about those N. Korean missile launches...?
Really trying to get writing done today. It’s still June, right? Mudge, is that you knocking?
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 07/04 at 09:26 PMFireworks just started off in the Bay… this year I will not see them. Manuel Garcia, Jr. is passing around a link to this article by PCR:
Mickey-- today I told someone my idea about a flag that looks like the sky… so that it blends right with the real thing; one doesn’t know where the flag begins or ends.... or where the sky starts.
The guy said, “that’s a good idea!” Yep… it’s good for everyone, and it’s Open Source-- no one person can own it. Go make one; I won’t stop you!
Posted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco, San Francisco 07/04 at 11:46 PMGet ready for the North Korea hype. A new villain is born.
We could use a sky flag, huh?
