Kid Gavilan's Grave
Two additions:
Firstly, I was wrong: The Cuban Hawk was knocked down once...by Carmen Basilio in a World Welterweight title bout at the War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse, NY on Sept. 18, 1953. He was floored in the second round but got up to score a unanimous decision.
Secondly, a friend suggested that Gavilan’s lack of support in the U.S. might have been partially due to his “blackness.” The Miami anti-Castro Cuban community is more “white” and thus did not view El Keed as a hero. Sounds feasible to me…

Gavilan was knocked down TWICE.
The first time was against Ike Williams, then world lightweight champ, in Madison Square Garden in 1948. At least one photo exists of Gavilan resting on one knee right at Williams’ feet.
