"Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Writers"
Yoda of course sez “Do or not do. There is no try.”
I’m gently pushing Endgame at ZNet blogs every so often (here, for example), trying not only to persuade some people to read it (I think there’s a big Mike Albert/John Zerzan divide for some reason), but to guage response to the threat of violence issue, among others.
If some big publisher asked me to write a non-fiction book (and I could choose the subject matter)...or put another way: if I could articulate a vision worthwhile of a large audience, I think I would try to bring together what I’ve read from Jensen, Michael Albert, William McDonough, and Vandana Shiva. But I have to go phocopy some fliers for a gig next week, so someone please steal my idea.
Posted by Keir on from the hague 06/01 at 05:35 AMGood morning, Keir and all yet to arrive.
Mickey...Wow, I am sorry to hear that you have been jerked around like that. I think that there is a “need” for a book like that. I guess its all about money. A while back the government got on my case because they said that I was hiding income from my writing. I told them that I don’t get paid. They didn’t believe me. Then I told them that some of the very best writers are not getting paid either. They really did not believe me then. I congratulate you for your efforts and hope that you don’t give up.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 07:54 AMMan, this post really depresses the hell out of me, but then, I guess it’s supposed to, and it doesn’t take much anyway with me. Well this one seemed pretty relevant like it often does:
Posted by James on from work 06/01 at 08:41 AMHi James… Thanks. Nice graphic there. The sign on my desk says, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” I’m glad that you are paying attention.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 08:51 AMI guess I’m hoping that when the activity mentioned in that comic becomes less fun for me and most of the world, things’ll get a lot better around here.
by the way, is it just my browser/ version of Firefox, or is there now spell check in these comment boxes? Oh man life is good.
Posted by James on from work 06/01 at 08:57 AMI don’t have Firefox, but have had spellcheck for a long time. Life is good, sometimes.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 08:59 AMMy mother would not have cared if I was a writer or better yet, a blacksmith would have really pleased her. RMJ #2...you said, “I guess its all about money”...I think thats very cute...(-:...you have my hug.

Posted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco, California 06/01 at 10:24 AMMZ, I’m not in your shoes, but have tasted bitter reversal enough to have total solidarity. Writing anything other than that would make me a hypocrite.

Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 06/01 at 10:34 AMWell Mickey, perhaps if you approach this publishing critter and offer to write a book explaining how Abraham Lincoln’s hemrhoid condition effected the outcome of the civil war, which is something we all would like to know about...he would probably sign you for a $million up front, funded by the Aeriel Sheron Publishing CO.
Posted by joe of maine on from 06/01 at 12:17 PMMickey, Thomas #8 says it all. You are too far out of the mainstream, and that’s exactly why they should publish you.
Robert #9...I agree with ward churchill. Protesting, marching, voting, etc. will never change things. A protest will only work if there is SOMEONE TO PROTEST TO. There is no one. That window of opportunity closed when they passed the National Security Act of 1947 and created the CIA and the Black Budget. Things are now so bad that Blackwater is claiming sovereign immunity.
HUGS to you, joe and Zen.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 12:27 PMThis is what I did last night. Mickey, I have mentioned this blog in my last few articles.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 12:33 PMMZ and Blogeroos:
Perhaps Mickey you have seen your Blog mentioned in today’s on-line edition of MWC News. The commentary was by Rosemarie Jackowski, a self-proclaimed (and proven ?) anti-war protester and advocacy journalist. Rosemarie states: “.....In addition, a blogger posted that message on the Mickey Z blog site. Comments on Mickey’s blog are generally much different. They are usually in the category of irreverent - edgy. It was shocking to see a prayer there.” I believe she was referring to the 12 steps reference that several of us mentioned the other day.
Edgy - Irreverent ?? “.......The time for singing protest songs is over.” Rosemarie finished the commentary with these words.
Maybe your faux-editors were double-bubble wrong, Mickey. Remember the Camus’ quote from the other day? Opressor or heretic was Camus’ reference to the fate of The Revolutionary.
I imagine you as a Prophet of sorts, much like John the Baptist ! Prophets are rarely welcome in their own land. Where have I heard that reference before? The MZ Blog is an exchange of ideas, humor, satirical reference, deep thoughts and much more. It reminds me of stopping by “Cheers” of tv fame, saying hello to Coach and ordering up the topic or historical point of the day.
If this is irreverent and edgy then let me be am Irreverent Edgehog!! Show me to the wild honey and locust and baptize me daily in the river of enlightenment.
Time for me to fly. My ride to the promised land is overdue.
Posted by RICHIE on from st cloud/n ft myers 06/01 at 12:42 PMThanks Richie...that just went up on MWC and the graphic is very relevant to Mickey’s situation here today. Richie you make a point. I wonder what would happen if Mickey contacted publishers out of the usa. He probably already has done that. Just a thought. BTW, my article is getting some harsh criticism from the anti-war people. They say I am advocating violence. I can’t win......

Posted by RICHIE on from st cloud/n ft myers 06/01 at 01:04 PMHugs to you, Richie. Some of my old articles are on the PressAction site. Please read the one about the usa ongoing crime against humanity, titled “The Secret that the Government Kept for 30 Years”, also my favorite article which was written in the middle of the night, the night before my Sentencing. That one is titled “A Sentencing Speech”.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 01:06 PMRMJ #19...I like your article a lot...I thought while reading...after 17 years of war against the middle east, it’s starting to sound like 1969
Posted by joe of maine on from 06/01 at 01:17 PMThanks, joe… yep, sometimes it seems like we are on one big historical loop that just keeps repeating. When I visit your area, I always smile and shake my head when I see the “Remember the Maine” signs.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 03:34 PMRMJ #24...Yes, RMJ, the one sign that always pissed me of is, Maine the way life should be...are they referring to the beautiful coastline or the l.l.bean sweatshops? Is this like Philadelphia, city of brotherly love and corruption and murder? Who thinks of these erroneous, silly slogans? As you know, Maine politicians are proud of bath iron works for making floating war vessels that are WMD’s!
Posted by joe of maine on from 06/01 at 03:56 PMjoe...I know what you mean about silly slogans. I have lived much of my adult life in tourist/commercial type places, like the Jersey shore. But, you live in a beautiful place and have the ocean. In my Maine travels, I have purposely avoided the Bath area. The thought of it gave me a bad vibe. Some of my favorite memories are of Maine, the ocean, the saltaire, the seagulls, the rocky coastline...someday, I will get back there.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/01 at 05:30 PMRMJ #26...I feel lucky I live between 2 beautiful bodies of water. The Androscoggin River minutes away and Middle Bay, a few more minutes away, a gorgeous bay filled with islands. Recently the man-made environment has filled my thoughts and they’re not pleasant thoughts, as they apply in Maine or anywhere. I have lost balance! Bath is a very nice place with the exception of gozilla occupying the town. The message of 1969 was of people, and some who I personally knew, who DID NOT want Gandhi’s approach to change...and they were angry......I hope you visit, you’re not far away...maybe I could meet the RMJ who I thought was a male until I saw one of your articles...(-:

I will be visiting your site as soon as I return here. I have to go out for a little while and am late.
Andy #29...Yes, I read it. It was part of the inspiration for my last article. In my view, Cindy was abused by the liberals, democrats, and anti-war groups. She seemed to be deeply hurt by some comments on “a left-wing blog”. I wonder

Posted by Joe of Maine on from 06/02 at 09:12 AMHi Mickey
Heres my story of hopes and dreams dashed.
Two years ago I sold my house, a real fixer-upper that was going to cost more than I had to keep standing. I was renting it out and starting to feel like a slum lord anyway.
The house sold. And rather than buy another house I thought I would invest the capital in creating a mobile gourmet bakery/juice bar. I would be creating a fantastic little job for myself and 1 or 2 other people and providing a high quality product/service for the public. With a couple of years of hard work I would be able to purchase/finance another modest home...or so I thought.
Long story short. I went bankrupt. 65,000 down the drain. And now I have nothing.
yes I made a few mistakes in the research. The main problems were with city permits...turns out these mobile businesses are not as desirable as they once were. lack of municiple tax dollars being collected being the root of it I believe. Whatever! After several months of scrambling to get back on my feet financially, kicking myself in the keester(didnt help much but seemed so irresistable at the time!) and aquiring massive amounts debt just feeding the kids while I tried to find a job , I realized where i went wrong. It was an “old idea” of mine. it was a dream goal vision from the late 70’s. It would have worked splendidly back then, but times have changed. It was an old idea. I am not sure which was more devastating: losing the money or failing to attain the vision of a dream. Or waking up to see how I had sucked myself in yet again.
Live and learn and be here now.
Thats my philosophy and I’m sticking to it.Posted by frances on from bc 06/02 at 09:40 AMFrances 33...feeling my own ‘stuff’ and reading your tragic experience...I can cry for you...at the same time, I feel a strength of yours, whether the capitalists appreciate you or not, I do...I have always felt I don’t fit in any damn where, the mainstream or the underground, there is no place, there is no sanity in trying to conform to that which is not human or fit for any life...and yet I, we, are trying. I don’t have clarity for an alternative, I agree with we must start working, living, planning, thinking, together as a family, a REAL community, whether it’s 3,4,11, members, whatever! The ecozoic era is upon us...I agree with this and especially if we make this happen...and we can.
Posted by joe of maine on from 06/02 at 10:11 AMTragedy? More like divine comedy.
Idries Shah says:
there is indeed a great division between what people think they need and what they actually need....
We are living at the moment in a realm of distortion. This means that, in acting as one really should, one has to adapt, almost, the sense of direction to make use of what materials there are here and now. In other words, it is not true to say that there is a consistent, continuous line of progress between how the ordinary man thinks and how he could think. He has to refine this thought, and he has to do it without throwing overboard the present way of thinking, to which most of his life is geared. The result is that he must develop what seems to him to be new organs of preception.
You may call this life a parody of the ‘life’ towards which man should be aiming. The parody must be played out, like a play. And also, the ‘other life’ or field of correct alignment or orientation, must be made a goal of endeavour.
There has never been any other true objective available to planetary man.

Posted by joe of maine on from 06/02 at 01:47 PMjoe #32...It is amazing how saturated with the military we are. When you see the large tanks and military convoys in small towns are over this country, it really makes you wonder.
Frances...that is a very sad story. I would not consider it a failure though. Failing to try is a failure. You did what most of us have done. At some point in our lives most of us believed that if you just worked hard enough, you could be economically successful. That’s the big lie. Many of the most hard working and really smart people I have known in my life, had to struggle financially and never really “made” it.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/02 at 02:43 PMYour story doesn’t surprise me at all, Mickey - unfortunately! The ‘Soft Skull’ Press also publishes Bill Blum, I think, so you are in very good company.
A warm hello from a still wet and cool Daylesford to Keir, Rosemarie, Maine Joe, Thomas McCullock, Zen Prole, RICHIE, Andy and frances. Thanks not only to Mickey for all his posts, links and quotes but also to all you expendables for your comments.
I hope your weekend(s) are good.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 06/02 at 04:49 PMwell it is kind of sad yes ...but on the other hand its also hilarious in that money only ever became a problem for me once I decided to go get some. I have always made due with the bare minimum and mostly that was plenty enough. Wanting “more” seems to have resulted in having less, if you know what I mean. Life is full of weird little paradoxs.
Posted by frances on from bc 06/02 at 06:44 PMFrances..40..wanting more money means, more involvement with ‘the sytem’, also allowing more nothingness, of various types into one’s consciousness, enabling one to lose themselves......

Yeah, but the main point is not the feelings being hurt or that ‘left’ writers criticise. I feel it’s the realisation that 90% of the ‘left’ or ‘liberals’ are simply caught up in the partisan game designed to supress any true action or independence.
It works.
So many people believe they are progressive simply because they have an opposing opinion on an issue to the ‘right’ side of this great game.
Most people I know back home (UK) who are progressive still have a lot of trouble letting go of a lot of stuff. They cling to colonial era writers like Conrad and Tolkien refusing to discuss the ideology in the writing, cling to an idea that our broadsheet media is not propaganda filled, cling to an idea that our societies are in someway ‘tolerant’ or culturally advanced ... and so on.
Like in the USA, every year goes by that the Washington Redskins is not made to change it’s name is another boot in the face of the victims of the largest holocaust the world has seen, with no recognition or sovereignty in sight.
Of course, I’m preaching to the converted here.
Had two months of my herniated disc in my neck and getting a bit down lately.
Samuel Beckett says: “I can’t go on, I’ll go on.”
Posted by andy on from shanghai 06/03 at 06:59 AMMornin’ all...Andy, I agree with you. My comment about Cindy was just a recognition of how difficult it is to be on the receiving end of some of the attacks. I saw her crying one day and feel compassion for her. It is the left/liberal blogs that were the last straw. I hope that your neck gets better soon.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/03 at 07:37 AMAfter 7 years of not being able to see the surface of my dining room table or floor, I finally packed up all of the legal documents a few days ago. Then, yesterday I was notified that it’s not all over yet. I am being sued by my lawyer. I think I have become the “trophy defendant”. Those who have been hanging around Mickey’s for a while already know the story but if any newcomers are interested here’s a link. It shows what can happen to anybody when they are just minding their own business and going about daily life in America the Beautiful.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/03 at 08:44 AMRMJ 45...Good Morning RMJ and everyone...RMJ, I read your commentary and felt my blood pressure go up...I have no patience for beaurocratic anything, at any level...I have little patience for anything, anymore...I do have a problem! My most serious legal hassles was with the military way of life and their justice system...it was simply change that my experience was brief and not too severe. I’m really sorry you’ve had this crap to deal with...know...I could easily go off the deep end here and say too much that would fit on this website. I responded to an activist, organizer type last evening. The question was, how do we regroup? My question is, do you know thy self? That is not how I responded, it is what I was trying to convey. The man who said to his 20 year friend, “I know you better than you know yourself”! What does this mean? How can we act on anything if we don’t even know what, why we want to act. Do we simply want the end to the bombing of Iraq, yet continue to ignore the war against americans, right here in the u.s., the planning grounds for expansionist wars elsewhere...how the hell can this make any sense? Do we ignore the classist, corrupt, discriminatory, violent, inequitable system defined by the wealthy right here at home? If the war under our feet, in our heads, in our towns and states continues...we might as well start making signs with every other countries names on them. We might start by trying to find out who we are as individuals and stop playing the role, we think the STATE has given us...and the illusion of freedom, perceived by how many pictures of dead presidents are in your pockets. Your quite a Lady RMJ.
Posted by joe of maine on from 06/03 at 09:30 AMHello Expendables. I love the fact that the conversations continue unabated whether or not I join in or make a daily post. That’s how it’s gonna be...for a while, at least. I’m sure general traffic will plummet but I’m hoping the regulars will remain.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 06/03 at 11:21 AMThanks, joe. I agree that just concentrating all efforts on stopping this war does not attack the root of the problem. As I see it, the root of the problem is Capitalism. Also there is the human component that you talk about. We do need to change our culture - we need to change the way we relate to each other - we need to change the way that we think about “government”. Also, another problem at the top of the list is to expose the Repugnantcrats. You talk about regrouping. Finally, Cindy gave up on the Democratic Party. She is regrouping, a little late but better than never.
I was working outside and had the radio on just now. I was listening to WGY, a talk station in Albany, NY. One caller said that the solution to our problems is to place land mines along the US/Mexican border. That is how a lot of people in this country think. I don’t think that we can put all of the blame for that kind of thinking on the government. Sometimes people have to be held responsible for what they say and what they do. I still believe that war crimes trials would be a wonderful way to teach some of the misinformed.
I sometimes think that “change” will have to be imported into this country from outside. Those around the world seem to be so much better informed. Eventually, when enough of them feel sufficiently threatened by U.S. policies and the U.S. military and mercenaries like Blackwater, then THEY will act to protect their interests. Blackwater = Blowback.
Freedom under Capitalism is just an illusion.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/03 at 11:47 AMRMJ 48...I would think it’s time to leap beyond politics altogether...small, self-sufficient communities can use general consensus to make decisions. This whole thing in america about leaders followers, heros, heroines, the jock, the hollywood idol, all this freak show insanity we normalize in, I guess most of western cultures...ugh! A leader, even though they might not know what they are doing, might think they are expected to lead, a follower thinks he should follow this leader who knows nothing! And so on a very large scale, population, geography...simply too large. The accumulation of 300 million people’s varying neurosis...oh brother...! We really must come out of our ‘trained’ state of doing things......

As far as preaching to the converted is concerned
William Blake:

I thought that if we were on the outside we would fall off.
Thomas #51...I agree
Frances...good quote
joe #49...Are you saying that we should secede? I agree that life would be better without any political influences but, they control the food supply, farming, zoning, decide who should be vaccinated and with what, etc. Has anyone been following the controversy between the government and Creekstone Farms? Most here are not meat eaters but that legal case is interesting. The government will NOT allow the company to test its own cows, at its own expense, in its own laboratories. Seems to me that the government is trying to hide the fact that the usa meat supply could be contaminated with prions. (Just my opinion. No law suits, please.) Sometimes I think that we should set up a commune in Cuba. Is that what you are advocating, joe?
Mickey...your voice here is missed. Hope all is OK.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/03 at 02:08 PMRMJ..55 I have seen articles about the govn’t and Monsanto bulldozing, terrorizing farmers, etc…
The government controls the food for 300 million people in 53 states, are we up to by now...I just ate a wonderful salad 2 hours ago and didn’t need permission from the cia or any other group of parasites to eat it. Secession is a nice idea...many or most of us on the site have seceded to some extent...on the way to work this morning, I thought of Words. The dictionary is generally viewed as the common reference for definitions and word useage. Frequently, I think, is forgotten the individuals experiences that help enable an intuitive attraction to a specific word to describe and communicate. Others might not know the individuals specific nuance of their word/preference/speech...so, no, we don’t need politicians...what gave anyone the idea we need politicians. Who tells you lungs to work? you eyes? your ears?...who chews your tofu for you? and swallows your apple cider? How did you, we grow from being 14 inches long and weighing 7 lbs. to being much taller and heavier as adults? The problem is...politicians are just as programmed as citizens are? They don’t know it. Politicians enjoy only their physical freedom and any sadistic joy of knowing they have power over others. Their sadistic tendencies come from being absolutely fucking nuts by any analysis!...Humans in general, it is thought by some, have been asleep, so to speak since the beginings of patriarchal systems...some have carried out certain roles and others another role...why would we want to continue this for one damn more minute...well, there are head bashing authorities, but they cannot control how we feel or think!Posted by joe of maine on from 06/03 at 02:35 PMMZ
Glad you checked in this morning...Hope you’re doing well. RMJ points out another hassle. Our bretheren and fraulein combined seem to find the scratch of daily trevails unscratchable. My ears itch. Something is up! My internal barometer is out of kilter. I remember feeling this way in the fall of 62’, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Putin is shanking his former commrade Bush. The “Gang” of 8 are meeting in the Hague (ckeck Meir’s invite to his site). Pelosi is looking at icemelt… Chavez is bootin’ his enemies off VZ tv.....US Warships steamin’ and firing on Somalia’s mountainous regions.......Fidel is well again! We’re supposedly relieved at “stable” $3 + gas prices..... Paris and Lindsey go to jail? It’s like a revised board-game of Monopoly Redux… But most disturbing to me, is Mickey’s retrenchment..... MZ seems to be heading for the fallout shelter. Texas can do that to a feller’.
Sometimes ... you just gotta’ rest .. and leave the rest .. to another to figure out… Where’s Al Franken when we need him? Oh that’s right, redefining his MN residency to take an 08’ swing at former New Yorker, Senator Norm Coleman...... Next thing you know, Michael Savage, the PhD of Nutrition and psycho-babble will join with Limbaugh to run for President… All in a daze headlines I guess..... So .. Buck Up! and Let the F* Up’s take their best shot of re-righting the Globe! RichiePosted by Richie on from st cloud / n ft myers 06/03 at 02:43 PMjoe...you were reading my mind. I was thinking about Monsanto. Your point is a good one - many here have already seceded, to some degree. There has been a real secession movement in Vermont for a couple of years now. I think you might say that it is a bit bogus because it is basically asking permission from the government to secede. That is the paradox - if you request permission, you acknowledge government authority.
One of my friends thinks that the Socialist Party is the answer. I tell him that that is still politics, still a political party, and implies that voting does some good. He says that I belong in the Anarchist wing of the SP.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/03 at 02:58 PMGreat comments there, Richie...you missed one. The airport “terrorists” are not associated with any of the other groups. The hatred against the usa is growing by leaps and bounds. The end of the Empire may be sooner than expected. As we all head for the fallout shelters, we can swear allegiance to Blackwater.
I agree that Mickey’s absence is a little disturbing.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 06/03 at 03:09 PMRMJ-58...one of the other problems with letters is...people can hear the other’s voice or see their body language...so...according to a few people at the Vermont Secession movement...I don’t know if they are waiting for permission for anything...things are happening...a progress...as things are happening elsewhere...I like many become extemely impatient and want noticeable change to happen quickly...so we forget about change in flux...we look to others, perhaps in the wrong place and wonder where change is, perhaps we look in the wrong places...for people to consider if they want to be part of a self-sustaining community...much, much apart from mainstream...u.s., and initially it will only be somewhat separate to varying degrees, the individual needs to have an understanding of themselves in order to co-exist in a completely different way...no tyrant is going to tell them what to do...many people are so busy wrestling with basic neurosis, their level of distrust and fear is such, they continue to lean toward the worst source of fear...the traditional authorities, fore they don’t know how to liberate themselves from their lifelong bondage to the words and habits of the traditional authorities, the state, the churches, the schools, their gurus, the bicycle mechanic who does very sloppy work and cannot read a 6 inch mechanics scale!
Posted by joe of maine on from 06/03 at 03:09 PMHi Mickey and people,
Ive been listening to Immortal Technique. Man hes got so much good stuff to share.
Heres a couple that I think fit in here very well. The Poverty of Philosophy:
You cannot change the past but you can make the future, and anyone who tells you different is a Fucking lethargic devil. I don’t look at a few token Latinos and black people in the public eye as some type of achievement for my people as a whole. Most of those successful individuals are sell-outs and house Negros.
