  5. Cool haiku there, Joe… what do you want Brad Pitt to do time for though-- general overexposure?

  7. Hello Expendables. It’s another steamy, muggy day in paradise

    Welcome back, Michael.

JOS: I’m sorry to hear of your loss. How old was Jackie?

Posted by Mickey Z.  on  from Astoria 08/03  at  10:40 AM
  8. Thanks, Mick.  It was her time...she was 13 and couldn’t even get up to go to the bathroom anymore due to serious back hip problems.  I’m going to miss her a lot.

  9. It sure is hard to lose a friend you’ve had for 13 years.

  10. JOS...Sorry to hear about Jackie. I like her name. That was my nick name a long time ago.

    michael...I was missin’ you.

Mickey...there was a letter to the editor in our paper recently talking about the abuses caused by horse racing. I was happy to see that someone up here was willing to speak up during the Saratoga racing season.

joe..."Running in place in quick sand”. I really like that one. That says it very well. You really know how to work your way around the language.

  11. She was my mom’s dog originally and she named her after Jackie O...a hint as to what I had to overcome growing up.  The name fit her well, I have to say...she was quite the diva.

yeah michael...I had been wondering where you were.  good to see you back…

  12. Hi RMJ.

JOS: If I remember correctly, JackieO died about 13 years ago. I’ll bet more than a few children and animals inherited here name then.

  13. JOS...When I lost my little guy...Wings...I lost a big part of myself.

  14. Thanks for the song Mickey!

Hey Bulldog happened to be the first song that turned me on to rock ‘n roll.

I lost much of my enthusiasm in the baroque seventies, and was grateful when the Ramones turned up. Still, they were in comparison, clicks at the end of a disc.

Beatle songs never fail to bring back loads of good memories-- or give me the idea that a collaboration of imaginative and talented people can literally produce magic.

And of course, all we really ever need is Love.

  15. Hey Mick...you’re right about that.  Makes a lot of sense.  That and the fact that my Irish Catholic family is obsessed with the Kennedys.

I hear you, Joe.  I don’t know what people will think about this: we had her put to sleep due to the fact that she literally could not get up anymore and we had exhausted every medical option.  We had the vet come to the house to do it, because Jackie hated going to the Vet.  I held her as he put her out and then injected her with an overdose of anesthesia.

Joe, I’m telling you I felt it when the life left her body.  The experience was very “spiritual.” I know, it’s a dog, but I also know the Expendables understand where I am coming from.

  16. JOS..15...we had the same experience...I cried, literally for months...he wasn’t simply a pet, I felt him as my son…

  17. The punishment for Michael Vick has to fit the crime: no prison or fines, but he can never own another pet of any kind, not even a pet rock. He gets the best training and nutrition that his team (owner) can afford. He plays football the best he can for as long as possible. If his career ends with an on-field injury, he is dispatched where he lands. If he gets cut, someone goes to his house to finish him off. <gavel smacks on wood> Next case.

JOS, so sorry about your dog. When my cat of 15 years (half my life at that point) passed on, I was a wreck. The photo is great: composition, colors, and personality… and what dog doesn’t like to go exploring at lakeside?

Eating contests have always made me sick, but televising them takes that a step further. They’re are on a par with staging a nose-picking contest, or a Filthy Home Competition. Bad as ESPN has become, I don’t think they would show up for that. Unless you paid them a lot of money.

Am reading a book on Roberto Clemente by David Maraniss. The writing is good, but the author is painfully conventional ("Yes, there was racism...") but I hadn’t read much about Clemente’s life or career. He was an amazing human being. As MLB turns to a plantation strategy to harvest talent (what is this new system but a form of gladiator academy?), one hopes some emerging Latin American players can make some large waves, on and off the field. http://tinyurl.com/2h3tqp

  18. I also say there should be stiff penalties for ALL animal abuse, but this is a nation that does not even place a value on human suffering.

  19. RMJ..18..while living upside down and inside out...against natural laws...so many things are wrong and can only get exponentially worst. The 81 year old lady just told me things are crazy...they can only be crazy...if they are crazy.

  20. Hello again everyone. Good to see you here, Robert.

JOS: It’s a tough issue dealing with sick “pets.” I hate the idea of deciding when an animal companion should die but we’ve so profoundly altered the lives of animals on this planet that we often play that role. That said, none of this makes it easier to deal with the loss. Again, I’m sorry to hear about Jackie.

    Zen: Nose-picking contest? I coulda been a contendah…

Btw, has anyone already posted this report?</a>

  21. I reckon that B2 article can be summed up with the words “Pork barrel”.
Our dog Pete had been with us from when I was 5 to when I was 21, his dying was an incredible wrench. Most of the last of the many many vet visits included Pete emptying his bladder on my lap - he wasn’t a small dog but it didn’t seem right for him to be on the floor.
A book I’ve just started, The Man Who Talks To Whales by a Jim Nollman, might be of Expendable interest. Slightly concerned it might be a bit hokey, but it follows the musician/zoologist Nollmman in exploring the possiblity of communicating with other species.

  22. Hey Mew. Great to see you here, too. If you look at the photos of me that rotate on the main page, you’ll see me with my parents’ cat, Mr. Lucky. He was put to sleep earlier this year at age 13.

Keep us apprised on that book, okay?

  23. Mickey-- whether I ring in or not-- I never miss reading your blog and the comments of all the good expendables.

I wish I had a dog-- or a cat!  But an animal deserves so much attention, and I barely can look after myself often.

Dogs really are devoted and nonjudgemental-- ready to please.  And what honor is more rewarding-- or mysterious-- than being favored by a cat?

I knew a cat that could recognize the sound of my car blocks away-- and would run after it-- fast as lightening on twinkle toes, tail straight up like a flagpole.  What a sight!

If I had a dog, I would teach it arithmetic.  Did you know a dog can hear you when you scape your nails?  I will never understand why too many people shout at their dogs when a whisper would easily do.

I love watching people walk their dogs.

There is a Chinese man who has a beautiful golden labrador who is his pride and joy-- a real prince of a dog.  The dog once had the opportunity to ride a cable car and never forgot the experience. At one particular corner on the top of a high hill the dog will sit and can’t be budged… until a cable car finally passes by and the drivers ring the bell.

  24. Thanks, Robert. I always enjoy your posts here...and I too once had a cat that recognized my car.
