New York Times Scoop: People before profits
“The trouble with modernity is how efficiently it obliterates the troves of age-old knowledge otherwise known as wisdom”
From what I understand much of ‘tribal’ wisdom is recieved directly from the plants and animals themselves. Theres a clue right there.
Seems like us modern folks choose instead to get our wisdom from each other.
Whats that Vonnegut said about the one-eyed leading the blind?
Good morning Mickey.
Its another soft rainy spring day here...beautiful really.
Dennis Kucinich submits to the senate articles of impeachment against Cheney...I am standing with him...of course I cant find mention of this in the Times....I guess it isnt news worthy yet.Posted by Frances on from bc, canada 04/25 at 09:14 AMHey everyone, its a horrible muggy day in London. We need some rain!
“Kucinich - A Senator You’d Give Tuppence For” (courtesy of the FaintPraise Advertising agency).Posted by Mew on from London 04/25 at 09:53 AMIt’s quite warm in Eastern Appalachia where I’m visiting, and the pollen is suddenly out in force.
Glad you included the multiple choice instructions, MZ. I choose ‘c’, four times.
Re: yesterday’s entry: I’m reading “The Blog Of War” and heroically advise my comrade Expendables not to do the same. The uncensored dispatches homeward from those at the front bear suspicious resemblance to the war song of chickenhawks in the rear area. I’d like to patent a way of convincing total strangers that risking life and limb for one’s increased prosperity is honorable and appropriate. Then I could retire the concept, like others have done with the electric car.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489037/MZ, it looks like the AL East could have a wild first half. The Sox swept the Yankees, then got thrashed by the Jays, who were previously trashed by the Orioles. Even Tampa Bay shows signs of life.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 04/25 at 11:20 AMThis article from the Wash. Post is hilarious, in a sad kind of way:
Posted by James on from work 04/25 at 11:29 AMThe WP article is truely funny, James #4. The following, taken fron it, is very telling:
..."Until the vice president’s condition is clarified, I am placing any action on hold.”
Cheers.
Posted by Ehtesham on from Canada 04/25 at 12:41 PMHello Expendables. Nice day here but no where near as warm as the past few.
It seems a right wing website has found my Tillman article and posted a link to show how “the left” thinks (insert laugh track here). Then, a left (sic) site posted the same link in order to explain that my article is not representative of the left. You can say that again.
Zen: If you have a decent fastball, the Yanks are ready to sign you.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/25 at 12:42 PMHow bout that A-rod, though?
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 04/25 at 12:48 PMSorry, MZ. I throw curveballs, and only in print. I would, however, coach third base for the mid-six figures and a decent dental plan.
Sharon Smith’s commentaries are as hard as orders to the combat zone: http://tinyurl.com/34zxjx If the US had a real press, she’d be on the tube twice a week.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 04/25 at 01:19 PMThat WP piece really does make Kucinich look like a pathetic loser. I’ve been called worse tho and I still stand by what hes trying to do.
Rosie has bumped Denis off the headlines anyway.
There is something really wierd going on...the press and prez candidates seem more desperate than usual to do anything but not talk about the real issues. Hyper-excellerated circus acting...and its nasty.
Maybe its always been this way and I am only noticing it now.Posted by Frances on from bc 04/25 at 02:37 PMHi Frances, Mew, Zen, James, JOS, Mickey, Ehtesham, and all yet to come…
I just received an unverified e-mail saying that the Vermont House, under the leadership of the Democratic Speaker just defeated the Impeachment Bill. There were many protesters there. I was not one of them. I wonder how many events like this it will take to show the Party faithfuls what the Democratic Party is really about. My position has always been that Impeachment trivializes the crimes.
Zen...there has been some news coverage of the crisis with the bee population. Maybe the planet will die when the buzzing stops, but then again no one cares because corporations do not own the bees. Maybe soon Monsanto will get on that project with one of their diabolical schemes.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/25 at 04:24 PMMy question: Would anything change if Cheney were impeached?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/25 at 05:07 PMMy answer: NO, nothing important would change. It is really the Congress that should be tried for war crimes. That might bring about some meaningful change. Right?
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/25 at 05:57 PM“The trouble with modernity is how efficiently it obliterates the troves of age-old knowledge otherwise known as wisdom”. Typical NYT-speak, Mickey - smooth talk but no real content. And whoever came up with the term ‘paper of record’? A very good book dissecting this paper’s Iraq reporting was published a few years ago - can’t remember the title but it was written by two people.
And ‘hi’ to Frances (saw a feature the other night about American deserters who cross the border into Canada), Mew, Zen Prole, James, Ehtesham, JOS and Rosemarie.
We had our ANZAC day yesterday - remembering the failed military adventure at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April 1915 and more and more used to score political points and glorify the military. Thank God that is over.
I’ll be off to Melbourne later today, so have a good weekend, all of you. Will be back here on Monday.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 04/25 at 05:58 PMMickey Z, I saw that thing at Maholog or whatever and left a comment there. I think you’re a great writer and thought her nyah-nyah line was not only childish but spoke to why many sites contribute very little: They think it’s a popularity contest. Keep writing like you do, it is appreciated.
Posted by Dave on from 04/25 at 06:14 PMcoincidentally Thomas Pain’s corner is reviewing Ward Churchills ‘Pacifism as Pathology’.
I’ve got a lot of reading to do. I think I have been bamboozled into believing a myth: about how we all have Choices and Votes and can Direct the course of government in peacable ways. (Ive been disneyized!) ha.
This Jason Miller quote really stood out:
“Fact is, there is not a single case in history where a deeply entrenched system of colonial, class or racial exploitation was overthrown by moral suasion and symbolic protests alone...If real change came about it was because force, serious disturbances, were being applied somewhere else alongside the nonviolent tracks...”
I am echoing Dave....Mickey keep writing like you do, its appreciated.Posted by Frances on from bc, canada 04/25 at 06:28 PMThanks, Dave (and Frances). Much appreciated...but that comment about the low traffic at my blog is the reality. I’ve been writing for more years than I care to admit and typically, the only reason this blog gets a spike in hits is when a right wing site like Red State rips me and this attack gets picked up by lefties like Mahablog and Crooks & Liars...desperately trying to distance themselves from me as quickly as possible.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/25 at 06:36 PMquality not quantity.....if that helps
correction:#15 quote is from Patrice Greanville
Posted by Frances on from bc 04/25 at 07:03 PMYou’re right, Frances. I’ve said this many times before: I must be doing something right to have attracted such an amazing group of regulars here. When it comes to comments and conversation, I’m thrilled. But, as I’m sure you understand, I’d love to have a bigger readership.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/25 at 07:25 PM“But, as I’m sure you understand, I’d love to have a bigger readership.”
Mickey, here’s a friendly tip:
I believe there is too much of “Rudy Giuliani,” “Bruce Lee,” “Mickey Spillane,” and “Lev Bronstein” in you and NOT enough “Mickey Z.”
I don’t mean to hurt your feeling, but you’ll have to reinvent yourself!
Posted by bismark on from 04/25 at 08:02 PMThanks, Bismark. I’ll consult my lawyer about your suggestion. If he advises me to follow it, I’ll get a new lawyer.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/25 at 08:09 PMHey MZ! I’m proud to be with you in the club of folks who’ve been “ripped” on at Red State:
My response:
And my article at OpEdNews that started it all:
Posted by Jeremy on from Taipei, Taiwan 04/25 at 10:08 PM“I’ll consult my lawyer about your suggestion. If he advises me to follow it, I’ll get a new lawyer.”
Classic Mickey Z.
Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 04/25 at 10:26 PMUR Welcome!
“I’ll consult my lawyer about your suggestion. If he advises me to follow it, I’ll get a new lawyer.”
That’s one of Groucho’s classics in his Quincy Adams Wagstaff role in Horse Feathers, if I remember correctly. Still a hilarious ‘one-liner’ after so many years.
