None of these will prevent the U.S. from bombing Iran:

Posted by Mickey Z on 02/23 at 06:23 AM
  1. Morning!

You’re right of course, Mickey. Remember those public service announcements with Smokey the Bear saying “only you can prevent forest fires”...? I used to feel terribly guilty about forest fires I hadn’t caused until I realized Smokey was a liar.

Chomsky’s not totally convinced an attack on Iran is inevitable. That’s nice.

Maybe these fellers can save us from all the violence.

Michael, re: your mention yesterday of the BBC calling Harry a “brave young man [who] wants to do his job properly” . . . interesting blog post by Paul Street on the role of media in defending (worshipping) power.

  2. Morning all! Mickey, there were some reasonable reactions to your smirking chimp post. More than you’d have gotten from DK anyway!

This one in particular: “I read Mickey Z a lot on other sites, and I’m guessing that he IS saying that these things won’t change a policy once it’s already been implemented--like invading Iraq, for example--but I think he would also suggest (as I am) that when you elect pro-military, centrist, interventionist Democrats for the sake of electoral “victory,” you’ve already cut the legs out from under what success grassroots organizing might have had in influencing policy.”

Keir, I recently read “Rattling the Cage” which talks a great deal about language and tool usage (among other things) in chimps and bonobos. Tool usage among non-human primates is a lot more common than we’ve given them credit for!

I’m not sure if it is me, but the chomsky article isn’t coming up with the url you linked in. The blog post you linked was really interesting though. I am going to have a few more books to add to my list, I think!

  3. Good morning Keir, Deb, and Mickey. One comment on the SC site got it right. Arrest the perps, all of them including Congress.  Try them for war crimes. The military should do it. It is their duty under the Constitution. They won’t, so it is up to the civilian population. Then after that, all assets of Halliburton, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, GE, et al should be liquidated and transferred to the Iraqi people to compensate them for the destruction that they suffered under the criminal invaders.

  5. Hello Expendables. It’s getting chiller by the minute here today.

Great comments, as always. Indeed, Smirking Chimp is light years ahead of Daily Kos...but that’s not exactly a compliment.

RMJ: I agree that those soldiers must be held accountable but, as usual, the ringleaders walk free.

Keir: I also cannot see the ZNet link.

  6. rmj, that article...geez. the defense attorney saying the trial was difficult on his client! The family that took in one of the men saying they were troubled he had to go through this (this being the trial) at all! Reading that made me sick to my stomach.

mickey, that was an interesting article. I missed the nytimes editorial as well as those provisions in general. I’ll start bugging my politicians. I don’t know if it will do any good, but I can’t help but to try.

I just read “secrets, lies, and democracy” by noam chomsky this weekend. The interview was done before the current regime, but it was almost more remarkable for that, because he was so accurate with his predictions of what would happen.

  7. Mickey, the thought of “putridnation” chanting during his candlelit hunger strike to stop you blogging warms my heart.

Rosemary, it may be the friday evening beer but I’m a little confused. “He’s vindicated, in a sense,” Cassara said. “He didn’t do what they claimed he did.” Thats OK then.
He only raped this girl, failed to prevent her murder or the murder of her family and - worst of all - broke military rules on alcohol.

And am I a terrible person for hoping that inbred little anachronism we’ve just sent to Basra gets an RPG up his royal buttocks? Apparently he’s got his own SAS team of bodyguards, same as all the other men in his unit. I’m sure theres a word beginning with B that sums up how I’m feeling right now.

  8. Chomsky article? I’m not sure he says anything much about the likelihood of an attack on Iran (except to note the resistance to it in the US military command.) Its more about why such an attack would occur.

  17. Mew #7...I have been following some of those cases. There are a lot of them. The Sentence in this one was 100 years but he will be eligible for parole in 10.  Last week-end Chalmers Johnson was speaking on C-span. He made the point that in the areas around the 737 usa bases in other countries, rapes of the young, local girls by usa military are common.

My captcha word is “nuclear”. Makes me think about Iran.  Why is no one calling for the usa carrier groups to be taken out of the area near Iran? Now is the time to protest the build up there, not after the bombs fall. I keep thinking about how those people must feel knowing that our bombs are ready to fall on them.

  18. No problem, Thomas. Feel free to re-post my stuff any time.

Hey, does everyone remember the article I recently did about Kid Rock? Well, it got posted on a Kid Rock forum and his fans are so in love with him (and the military), they didn’t even notice what my article was saying until one person pointed it out:
    http://tinyurl.com/2g8jrx

You can’t make this shit up.

  19. Off topic and on the lighter side...At the time of my arrest, my protest sign was confiscated by the police. It was held in the evidence lock-up. At the trial it had to be subpoenaed because the government refused to produce it. Then the judge refused to allow the jury to take a good look at it. Part of the Appeal before the State Supreme Court was based on the fact that the jury was prevented from reading what was on the sign. The Supreme Court Judges considered the sign in the rendering of their decision. Now that there will not be a second trial, I have gone to the police station to retrieve the sign. My plan was to see how much it could bring on E-bay because of its unique history. I just learned that the police have “lost” the evidence. The protest sign will never be returned to me. It was my personal property. I have a receipt signed by the police department that proves that they had possession of it.

  20. keir, will read that tomorrow. its bookmarked.

as for the general discussion, i am not a socialist but i do believe (going by the first comment on the liberal reaction) that a general strike would stop it.

the problem is that the possibility of such a thing has been so diluted by in the UK the weakening of the unions (which used to be rather strong) or in the US the criminilisation of the unions before they got to be strong (despite many heroic acts).

in the uk the unions who were never perfect are now just parodies of their former selves.

people arent quite aware of the force of what a general strike is.

    EVERYBODY STOPS

that WOULD stop it. but i just don’t see how it can be organised succesfully at the moment.

maybe that should be something we should try to work on???????????

    opinions please

  21. RMJ: Those bastards (cops) must have a field day destroying your poster.

Michael: I agree. As you notice, I did not include “geneal strike” on the list of ways to stop this:
    http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article17154.htm

I’d love to see it. Not some weekend parade...but a sustained strike that paralyzes the country in the name of peace. Trouble is, how many in America would participate? 3%? If anyone has ideas on this, I’d love to hear them.

  26. That sucks, Michael. I’m always surprised such accidents aren’t more common. Well, here’s hoping you lots of niceness anyway.
