Gotta get more sleep, later…
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 05/18 at 06:04 AMNice post. Animals rule.
Question for all you Expendables on a similar topic: I’m looking for a list of animals and plants brought to extinction (or endangered) by human activity, especially recently. Haven’t had much luck doing standard internet searches. The text will be used in a film I’m a-makin’.
Mudge, from yesterday: KRS-1 (aka KRS-ONE, aka Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone) is a hip hop pioneer most popular in the late 80’s/early 90’s. His work is a phenomenal blend of socially conscious lyrics and minimalist beats. He was largely responsible for bringing reggae influences into hip hop and albums like Criminal Minded, By All Means Necessary, Ghetto Music and Edutainment are worth listening to even for people who think they don’t like hip hop music. The historical and social relevance is enormous.
Posted by Keir on from The Hague 05/18 at 06:22 AMhe´s playing here on Sunday though I´ll be in France.
Posted by owen on from barcelona 05/18 at 06:56 AMMudge, Keir explained KRS-1 better than I ever could…
He and Public Enemy used to actually rap about shit that mattered.
Some highlights of KRS-One’s “Black Cop”:
Thirty years, there were no black cops
You couldn’t even run, drive round the block
Recently police trained black cop
To stand on the corner, and take gunshot
This type of warfare isn’t new or a shock
It’s black on black crime again nonSTOP
Here’s what the West and the East have in common
Both have black cops in cars profilin
Hardcore kids in the West got stress
In the East we are chased by the same black beast
The black cop is the only real obstacle
Black slave turned black cop is not logical
But very psychological, haven’t you heard?
It’s the BLACK COP killin black kids in Johannesburg
Whassup black cop, yo, whassup?!
Your authorization says shoot your nation
You wanna uphold the law, what could you do to me?
The same law dissed the whole black community
You can’t play both sides of the fence
1993 mad kids are gettin tenseBlack cop!! Black cop black cop black cop
Stop shootin black people we all gonna drop
You don’t even get, paid a whole lot
Take your four-five and you put it ‘pon lock!
Take your M-60 and put it ‘pon lock!
Take your uzi, put it ‘pon lock!
Black cop black cop black cop
Black cop black cop black copPosted by JOS on from Chicago 05/18 at 08:34 AMMONKEYS’ RULE! Mickey he’s not one of your early Wednesday clients, is he? Gawd help them if that chimp ever decides to put his skills to use.
Petition signed, of course. Kill shelters and the like where animals are doomed despite any efforts by responsible owners to retrieve their companions are among those most reprehensible of entities.
Strange: I saw a NYC electric hybrid bus on the road today.
WTF’s it doing here?
I hope we have electric public transit soon too - good for NYC.Rap music.....the good stuff didn’t last quite long enough to get me hooked. I want to like it, but so much of it is so spectacularly shitty that I’d want to hear it as much as I want to hear Britney her ilk that I tend to be out of touch with it. Thankfully Youngfox is keener on it than I am so I still run across some relevant rap music now and then.
Captcha says “through”; as in the Looking Glass.

Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 05/18 at 09:24 AMGreat interview of Chavez confronting media with their own hypocrisy:

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 05/18 at 11:13 AMCoutesy of http://lefti.blogspot.com/, Fidel Castro is the greatest money maker the world has ever seen according to Forbes:
- In 2003, Forbes estimated Castro’s “wealth” at $110 million
- In 2005, $550 million
- And in 2006, $900 million!!!Almost 900% growth in 3 years...I wonder if someone is making these numbers up in order to undermine him.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 05/18 at 11:19 AMSounds like Fidel has a future on Wall Street if he ever tires of the whole despot gig (even captcha sez: income).
Hello Expendables. I find it telling that you folks care more about KRS-One than rampaging hordes of black belt monkeys. Well, when it comes to hip-hop, I concur with the Empress: “the good stuff didn’t last quite long enough to get me hooked.”
And Empress, that karate primate? I’d like to take credit for his skills. My spinning kicks never looked as good.
Keir: I’ll see if I can find something, re: endangered/extinct.
I’m heading out. It’s sunny and cool and pretty awmazing in Astoria today.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/18 at 11:54 AMBtw, some good news: I got Counterpunch to run that animal shelter alert as their “website of the day.” That should guarantee thousands of hits.
Here’s to Counterpunch:
http://www.counterpunch.orgPosted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/18 at 12:02 PMI back...and I bring with me the 10 worst corporations of 2005:
http://www.sfbg.com/entry.php?entry_id=393Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/18 at 01:20 PMI can’t see any of the images on your page. :(
Posted by kim on from 05/18 at 02:09 PMI can. you´re missing so much, there´s dancing alligators and a peacock chorus line. but seriously, I don´t know enough about computers to say why you can´t.
Posted by owen on from barcelona 05/18 at 02:14 PMHi Kim: Someone else said the same thing but, as far as I know, you are the only two. Does everyone else see the images? Please inform. Thanks.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/18 at 02:25 PMHurray-- I haven’t worked as a proofreader for any of them. My employers have probably all been in the top twenty somewhere.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 05/18 at 02:50 PMHi all....thanks for the link to the Chavez i S.
Amelopsis...I agree with you about rap music. Maybe its a generational thing. My favorite music is still the cool jazz of the 40’s and 50’s. No one here has ever hear of Erroll Garner it seems. If I did listen to current music I would have to support the Dixie Chicks. They have taken a lot of flack because of their political views, even had death threats. They still are paying a big price for having criticized Bush’s war policy. I like the title to one of their latest, “Not Ready to Make Nice”. It shows their view of things that are happening now.
Looks like Tasini is picking up some support.
http://tinyurl.com/rroh7Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/18 at 02:55 PMOh my GAWD it’s hot. 92F.
I’m at the library trying to work with one of my sex-offender ex-cons on reading skills and I took a break. I’ll have time to comment more later...but Keir...you’re the first one ever anywhere to make me want to investigate anything rap-ish.
Back to the ex-con. Later days.
Posted by Mudge on from Austin 05/18 at 05:32 PMI’m more than a little astonished that no one commented on the deer-attacking-hunter video. Oh well..
Also, can everyone see the images on the site?
Hello Mudge…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/18 at 05:36 PMgood points all around indeed, Mickey!
And ‘hi’ to James, Keir, Owen, JOS, Amelopsis, Kim, Rosemarie and Mudge.
This one is for you, Amelopsis - it seems our PM John Howard got a rowdy reception in Canada. Good on you, Canadians!
http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/rowdy-welcome-for-pm/2006/05/19/1147545483291.htmlAnd the once mean streets of NYC now feel safer than those of Melbourne, Australia? Mr Franklin seems to think so:

Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 05/18 at 06:29 PMAnd happy holidaying in France, Owen! Sounds good to me.
Here’s Edmund White on his life in Paris between 1983 and 1998:
http://www.paris-expat.com/interviews/8.02_ew.htmlEnough to make one envious.
Au revoir!Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 05/18 at 06:32 PMJOS,
Judith Miller = reporter? More like a stenographer IMHO. She seems to have found a new home at the ‘Wall Street Journal’.Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 05/18 at 06:41 PMIt’s nice to see that a number of Canadians were motivated to protest, thanks for pointing it out Helga. I especially like that they bother to describe our Parliamentary edifices as “Neo Gothic”, which they most certainly are; but which I think few Canadians would even recognize. It’s too bad that our msm is preoccupied with the drama of the life of a female soldier who died in Afghanistan to keep us abreast of other issues such as public protest in the capital.
(I think I see all the pictures - now you’ve got me thinking I’m missing something!?)
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 05/18 at 06:53 PMI am not too proud to admit that I saw that moron being attacked by a deer on the idiot box. (-and I claim my due shame as well.)
He planned the damn thing and had his wife video taping it. (genius - watching him but not helping because he tells her not to)
Covered himself in some deer business and got the respectable creature feeling like he was going to make an example of the stupid human.Sport hunters really are crazy.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 05/18 at 07:27 PMAh, now I feel silly, too. I actually believed that deer video was real.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/18 at 07:44 PMRMJ #17: I know who Erroll Garner is; I have Django Reinhart albums; I own Nat King Cole recordings that pre-date Nature Boy; my second-favorite song of all time is Give Me A Kiss to Build a Dream On by Louis Armstrong; I ONLY like Ella Fitzgerald pre-1960 (Sings the Gershwin Songbook came out 1959, can’t think of any album I love more) and Billie Holiday post-1947 (after heroin “ruined” her voice); do I get the job of consort yet?
Helga #22: Judith Miller reminds me of the veracity of Truman Capote’s dismissive comment on Hemingway: “That’s not writing, that’s typing.” Preach it, Sister Tru. Likewise Gertrude Stein’s far more painful assessment of Hem: “Ernie’s remarks do not constitute literature.” This coming from a woman who wrote Four Saints in Three Acts is a widge errrm over the top, but still, truth is where ya find it.
Amelopsis #24: Faked up, yes; funny, oh my yes. How are you, NUtI Empress? My fractured elbow hurts today, so arnica isn’t on my list of pet plants just now.
MZ #19: I can see most of them most of the time, all of them some of the time, and none of them once in a way. Dial-up connections are the first suspects and sub-1 gig processor speeds are the second when diagnosing this ill. I am completely fooed today, so I sign off herewith; all have my fondest wishes for a delectable day on 5/19/06.
Posted by Mudge on from Austin 05/18 at 09:31 PMAmelopsis #23: the Australian MSM operate along the same lines as the Canadian ones most of the time - 70% of Australian dailes are owned by one Rupert Murdoch btw.
Mudge #26: Great quotes!
And there must be some gay hunk somewhere just waiting for you, Mudge. Good luck! Did you know that Edmund White’s current boyfriend is a full 26 years younger than Ed? As Mr Helga says: ‘Some people have all the luck.’
