Screw Washington and Lincoln...today is my Mom's birthday
I always thought Mother Jones was black, fancy that. Happy Birthday to your mother Mickey, and many more for her too.
My mother is a painter/healer and lives in Dusseldorf and the Pyrenees with her boyfriend Geoff, their two cats (Petit Roux and Lulabelle) and two dogs (Lola, Thelonious).
Posted by Owen on from Barcelona 02/20 at 07:48 AMI second that, MZ - many happy returns to your mum and I wish her many more.
Posted by Chris Wood on from Manchester, England 02/20 at 07:54 AMHappy birthday to Mickey’s Mother
We love you more than any other
Have a joyful, fun-filled day
Don’t forget to laugh and playPosted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/20 at 08:07 AMhappy birthday to mickeys mother and i hope it is a good party.
my mother passed away when i was 4 so i only really have two memories of her, which i won’t go into here.
i don’t know that much about her because everyone gets too upset when she gets mentioned so i have never really had the heart to put people thru the mill in that way, until now. i recently decided to meet up with my aunt and uncle and spend the whole night talking about what made her tick and who she really was.
what i do know is sort of anecdotal, and she sounds great. there is one story when she was in the hospital and very weak but she still managed to sit up to clip my big brother round the ear because he refused to offer one of the chocolates he brought to the woman in the next bed.
also, i happen to know she is the only woman in the world ever to have spurned an advance from james bond. sort of. roger moore (when he was in a show called ‘The Saint’ - before he became james bond) came into the bank where she worked in london and noticed her. he came back the next day with a huge bunch of flowers and asked her out. she said no because she had just met my dad.
so there you have it.
captcha is ‘strength’ - now that is a weird one.
Posted by michael on from scotland 02/20 at 08:22 AMMZ, you’re a swell guy! (Hey, that’s actually a nifty adjective. Maybe it could make a comeback.)
Give your mom our best! Here’s another link about whales (my belated mystery link):
Doh!
Posted by Jeremy on from Taiwan 02/20 at 08:24 AMThank you, Owen, Chris, RMJ, Michael, and Jeremy. Trust me: If you could ever meet my Mom, you’d see what an amazing person she is. I still haven’t figured out what I did to deserve her.
Michael: Thanks for sharing your story and good for you that you reached out to learn more about your mother. The Roger Moore anecdote is priceless.
Jeremy: Based on your mystery link, I might say that Farley Mowat is the Prince of Whales.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/20 at 08:37 AMGood morning Own, RMJ, Jeremy, Michael, Mickey & a Very Happy 70th Birthday to Mrs. Z!
Wishing you a Whale of a good time! (yuk yuk)
(re aggregators...Youngfox has a World press wire aggregator on his site, if anyone wants an example of Keir’s explanation from yesterday)
Posted by Amelopsis on from CAnada 02/20 at 08:55 AMYo. My mother has been a centrist Democrat all her life, with occassional sympathy for a few Republican policies. However, if she were president the US would swing so strongly to the left we’d all get butterflies in the stomach. The end of war. The beginning of education. Tolerance. She’d take no shit from lobbyists. Everyone would find a meaningful job to do, and the environment would be lovingly protected. It’d be nice. My mother wasn’t a stay-at-home mom, but she wasn’t a careerist either. More moms in public office!
Anyway. Okay. You asked for it.
Empress, that thing on Youngfox’s site is just a RSS or Javascript news feed, not an aggregator. But to be honest, maybe that’s a better idea! I guess it would be relatively simple to make a javascript of Expednable blogs and articles with, say, the last 5 or 10 updated appearing somewhere on our sidebars.
Posted by Keir on from The Hague 02/20 at 09:25 AMoh - I’m a java ignoramus - only thing I know how to do is enable it, and drink it. Now I’m not what the visible difference would be between it, and an aggregator, but I like this general idea.
I need a cigarillo now - and a poncho.
More moms in public office! Ok - an advisory position for disabled persons could be fulfilled by mine.
Posted by Amelopsis on from CAnada 02/20 at 09:34 AMHello Empress and Keir. I’m stopping by with one more quick link: http://tinyurl.com/nza85
See everyone later…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/20 at 09:34 AMHAPPY FORTY-NINTH ANNIVERSARY OF YOUR 21ST BIRTHDAY MRS. ZEZIMA! Many more and much healthier. By the way, thank you very much for giving us Mickey. It was very kind of you to do all that work and then let us reap the rewards. Regards, Mudge
Mothers...mine wasn’t the kind whose birthday we should celebrate.
Now I must go figure out what’s afoot here in Sherwood. Aggregators...RSS...? >eep<
Posted by Mudge on from Austin 02/20 at 12:43 PMHappy Birthday to your mother, Mickey - and many happy returns! Lovely post - good to see that you love her so much.
And a warm ‘hi’ to all you MZ’ers/expendables. My back is not yet 100% but a lot better, so there’s hope ..
Ciao amici.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 02/20 at 02:13 PM‘More moms in public office’ - I second that, Keir! My Mum used to say that things would be very different if she was - she is still alive but has heart problems and is losing her eyesight. She is nearly 85, though ..
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 02/20 at 02:17 PMHelga I missed it when you said your back was bad - sorry & I’m glad you’re on the mend too.
Mudge - worry not, Sherwood will not get too complicated. (I say this with the full knowledge that I’m am able to add a feed to my site when provided with finished code; and am utterly incapable of knowing how to create same.)
I’m enjoying all the whale links - Mickey those photos are really beautiful - I like the one of the mother, child & ‘escort’.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 02/20 at 03:11 PMHi Empress! I got the Mowat book. Finished it. Stackpole, his current publisher for that book, has several more of his they’ve reissued. I’d like to see a Mowat renaissance in the environmental community...his voice is sane and yet passionate and committed in all his books.
Posted by Mudge on from Austin 02/20 at 03:26 PMHello again.
Helga, I must also confess that I missed the reference to your sore back. Perhaps Mudge can send one of his patented whammies.
Empress, I’m still waiting for the Mowat book. Circumstances have no cooperated but I’m hoping to get it with time to spare for March 3.
Michele and I are heading out now...meeting friends here: http://www.caravanofdreams.net.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/20 at 03:36 PMHelga, what seems to be the back issue? Are you possessed of a strain, or is there some structural ickiness? I’ll whammy the bejabbers out of your painful malfunction, but it helps if I know what I’m doing.
The dogs want in, the dogs want out, the dogs want in, the dogs want out. I’m a puppy butler. Arf!
Posted by Mudge on from Austin 02/20 at 05:41 PMHappy Birthday to Mrs. Z! See you all tomorrow.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 02/20 at 05:57 PMHello everyone
I enjoyed the article about Mother Jones, Mickey.
I did not know that she was born in Ireland. As the saying goes you can tell an Irishman, but you can’t tell him much. My mom was born in Dublin, Ireland and believe me you can’t tell her much.Mudge: It’s funny that you mention that you are a puppy butler. It’s funny because I’m house sitting at the moment and the Kitty (that is her name) wants in, then out, then in, then out..I am a kitty butler.
And last but not least happy birthday to Mrs. Z.
Posted by Fiona on from San Diego, CA 02/20 at 06:50 PMOh - butlering for the kitties - I mean puppies...we hope for snow that the cats may better perceive the chill in the air.
Mudge I’ll have to catch up - I’ve not yet made a significant dent in my copy of a Whale for the Killing yet. Mine’s an old copy (lucky me!) but I’m curious to know if there still exists a map of the region in the newer editions, is there one in your copy?
Mickey I had to stop perusing the menu. Wish I had more similar eating out options here, or maybe not - I couldn’t afford it - but it sure looks yummy.
Good night, and good luck!
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 02/20 at 07:20 PMHello Expendables. Great to see JOS, as always. Nice to have Fiona here on a regular basis...and, of course, Mudge and the Empress (two of my favorite misfits).
Empress, we can’t really afford such gourmet vegan dining too often...but two good friends were kind enough to give us a gift certificate to Caravan of Dreams. Also, thanks to my Veg News column, we’ll be eating for free here next: http://www.candlecafe.com. Once in a blue moon, my writing actually pays off with a perk like that.
Btw, I should have some news as to where Michele and I will be living soon. Stay tuned.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/20 at 08:40 PMHey Happy Birthday to Mrs. Z (Mickey’s mom, not Michele)-- same age my dad would be now.
Keir, Josey Wales, always a favorite of mine, some of the best Clint one-liners in one movie of his. “Dying ain’t much of a livin’”, etc. And the way he avoided war with the natives at the end there… just wish I could grow a beard like Josey’s, that was a cool one.
How did you like Caravan? Do you see my point at all about it over Anjelica’s? The latter’s time has come and gone as far as I see it, prices getting higher, portions smaller, more rice less beans, etc.... I almost broke up with my fiancee over which place had the better walnut lentil pate (we found other stuff to split us up). Candle, on the other hand, just has bad feng shui. It’s just, well too crowded, but also, too much upper east side. A terminal condition.
Good luck apt. hunting; still think there could be a place open in my building here…Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 02/20 at 09:17 PMI still prefer Angelica Kitchen (http://www.angelicakitchen.com) by a large margin over Caravan. At the moment, however, I’m partial to Foodswings: http://www.foodswings.net.
Good night, everyone.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/20 at 09:29 PMEmpress, “if there still exists a map of the region in the newer editions, is there one in your copy?” this book would make no sense whatever without maps! Thanks be they left them in; Mowat also updated the whaling information in the book for the year 2004.
MZ, I your NUtI Emperor a misfit? Yeah, well, okay...it fits.
CatLady, an apartment in Hell’s Clinton would not suit El Z, don’cha think? He’d wither and fail to thrive outside Queens.
Fiona, kitty butler or puppy butler, it’s all about them them them, ain’t it? And the kitty’s not even yours! I admire your selflessness.
Nytol!
Posted by Mudge on from Austin 02/20 at 10:24 PMYeah, I know, both about an apartment here, and the restaurants; was just making conversation…
