Stirring up a cyber-stew...
its an impressive feat no doubt (the guy eating the donuts) but i always think the more important question with stuff like this is not ‘how do they do that?’. its ‘why do they do that?’
Posted by michael on from scotland 10/19 at 06:58 AMGood Morning to all in Mickey’s World...I like the T shirt idea........About the definition of “love”, what about altruistic love, what about the love one feels for their child. what about love of our fellow man ? I see a big difference between “love” and “lust”. I know that it can be argued that there is no such a thing as an altruistic act, but I am not so sure. Maybe Valentine’s Day cards should say, “I Lust You”. I don’t know.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/19 at 08:06 AMmaybe valentines day cards should say “i have to express my feelings about this person thru a profit oriented and corporate fuelled holiday because i am so emotionally repressed that i can’t do it in other ways and at times of our choosing”
i am a real romantic can’t u tell!
Posted by michael on from scotland 10/19 at 08:11 AMI´ve just spent the last ten minutes surfing for pictures of Bootsy Collins so what do I know?
Posted by Owen on from Barcelona 10/19 at 08:12 AMThat was a response to Michael´s first post by the way.
Posted by Owen on from Barcelona 10/19 at 08:13 AMI thought it was great, as is the conversation with George (Orwell, not that other jackass).
Then he gets a visit from this hot indian poet on his third post...the lucky bastard.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 08:20 AMEver heard Bootsy playing in James Brown’s band during the 70’s? Now that’s music.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 08:22 AMMickey, I have a question. If you don’t support sweatshops--especially in Third World countries with lots of poor people!--how do you propose to provide them with wages at all, save for living wages? A “living” wage is just not economically feasible! I don’t know if you read Kristof’s column in the NY Times, but he had an excellent point a couple of days ago. If we don’t lower wages and increase flexibility, what kind of countries will want to invest in the over-regulated Third World? They’ve made it this far on $1/day, what’s so bad about $3/day for now? It worked in Indonesia, am I wrong?
Posted by Donald Sanskrit on from Hiroshima, Japan 10/19 at 08:26 AMMichael....I like your style. I will save your comment and use it to make my own cards this year!
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/19 at 08:28 AMcheers rosemarie.
i got round it one year by turning up one day (not valentines) with cards and flowers, chocolates, train tickets, champagne and everything.
i had got them to write on the chocolate “happy pointless day” and had that on the card and i decorated the hall and everything.
so i am not against the expression of love thing at all. just not when its a sanitised and commercialised expression.
Posted by michael on from scotland 10/19 at 08:33 AMand JOS - i was lucky to get arundhati junior eh?
Posted by michael on from scotland 10/19 at 08:35 AMYes you were...besides being pretty, she is quite a poet. I’m in love and married, but that doesn’t mean I can’t fall in lust every once in a while. There, there IS a difference between love and lust.

Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 08:41 AMUncle Donnie, why don’t you come out with a real name and less sarcasm and perhaps you’ll find constructive conversation? I think the topic you raise today deserves serious contemplation and productive discussion. How about less BS HIV/Aids and Marxist questions, numerous AKAs and childish Wikipedia nonsense (if that is you)? Yes, no? It’s up to you, but I for one am pretty tired of this shite. Those of us here enjoy ourselves, we agree with Micky and others and we disagree with Micky and others… I for one welcome disagreement. It’s all good. Give it a shot brother...it won’t hurt.

Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 08:53 AMBy the way, those who have no idea what I am talking about, just continue on with your conversations...sorry about the interruption. My apologies.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 09:26 AMHello all...just got back from eating donuts while listening to Bootsy.
Just in case she’s too modest to point it out, Rosemarie has a new article up: http://tinyurl.com/7ocmx.
Btw, just because I post someone’s words here, doesn’t mean I automatically agree. My friend Warren was beyond cynical BUT there is more than a little truth to his philosophy.
Michael: I’m also not much for sanctioned holidays. The very concept of greeting cards bugs me, too. Mass-produced sentiment? Michele and I have been making our own cards for years.
JOS: I appreciate you exposing the troll. In the end, however, it’s usually best not to feed them. I do relate to this line of yours: “I’m in love and married, but that doesn’t mean I can’t fall in lust every once in a while.” Just because you have a gourmet meal on the plate in front of you doesn’t mean you can’t take a peek at the menu every now and then (as long as you don’t order anything).
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 09:28 AMNo Michael, the real question is if the donuts were vegan or not! I don’t think he had the benefit of this: http://www.nutrilicious.com/ back then. Mmm… lunch is too far away.
And I’ve been wondering about Mickey’s Wikipedia entry too. Starts out okay, then kinda veers off…
James (and that’s my real name, I swear!)
(captcha: them, as in us vs...)Posted by James on from 10/19 at 09:29 AMHey James. We must have been typing at the same time. Damn, I didn’t know about those vegan donuts. Count me in.
As for Wikipedia, as I said, best not to feed the trolls.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 09:32 AMjust looked at the wikipedia entry. what the #### is all that about?
Posted by michael on from scotland 10/19 at 09:41 AMI had one of those mad as hell moments, Mick. Sorry about that…
“Just because you have a gourmet meal on the plate in front of you doesn’t mean you can’t take a peek at the menu every now and then (as long as you don’t order anything).”
exactly…
now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Anyone interested in “The Flame Game” updates, my new cyber-bro, Mike is doing a hell of a job here:
and I am surprised no one is talking about Saddam going on trial today for killing 143 Iraqis? Oh, it must be because our military killed more Iraqis than that last week and the doublestandard is too much to handle:
http://wdthu.blogspot.com/2005/10/saddam-saddam-was-pussycat-compared-to.html
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 09:48 AMoops...I opened a whole can of worms here.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 09:50 AMYeah, we just missed each other before. It was weird, I was excited at first to see you listed in wiki one day I was websurfing at work-- kinda like today, so I’m happy that mickeyz.net isn’t firewalled out of corporate america-- But then it went the way it did. I’m not really sure how wiki works exactly, but couldn’t someone cool go and rewrite it?
Yeah, you can order those donuts in bulk directly from the company, or find them in some health food stores around town. Cost triple what the ones at the coffee carts do, though.
For some reason when I type at this location, I have to type in the captcha over a few times before it accepts it.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 10/19 at 09:52 AM“I’m not really sure how wiki works exactly, but couldn’t someone cool go and rewrite it?”
I guess anybody can write a page in Wiki, I am not sure how anyone can verify the accuracy of these pages. Some morons with a lot of time on their hands and a extremely strange infatuation with Mickey wrote one.
They come on here with names like Infanta, Mr. Dong or Uncle Donnie.
I wlecomed them to my page once, but true to their high school crush, they stayed here at Mickey’s.
Anyway, I messed up in bringing it up. But I think people should know about it.
And yes, someone cool should rewrite it...let’s work on that.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/19 at 10:02 AMJOS, maybe the solution to our name conflict could have been for you to be ‘Uncle James’... hey, the real conflict with RATM was eventually btn Morello and the rest of the band, right? What’s he been up to since they broke up?
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 10/19 at 10:08 AMWorms officially no longer in can, JOS.
Wiki pages can be edited by anyone. I’m not sure how one creates an actual page but they do have rules. Coincidentally, the person who created “my” page had his own vanity page deleted by the Wiki staff. As for me, thanks to an unexplained grudge, I have Wiki page...a melange of fact, accusation, and fabrication. The page’s author even included a “discussion” comment bemoaning the existence of this page. He thought of everything, huh?
For now, if you don’t see it as the equivalent of eating donuts on your head, feel free to go edit my (sic) page. You can rest assured that the original author (or his cohort) will respond.
Since I am loathe to respond to trolls, I’d rather drop the topic.
James: Tom Morello is in Audioslave now. I don’t know what happened to Zack, but I liked his style.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 10:18 AMOh, I was mixing up Zack with Tom. It was Zack that left… This site seems to be a combo of wikipedia and a Zack site, with how you can update pages on it: http://www.zdlr.net/
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 10/19 at 10:28 AMEnglehardt interviews Cole II:
Is this where Juan goes wrong? I haven’t read it yet, but it has an interesting intro that explains the evolution on Juan Cole’s thoughts on US military withdrawal.
One important thing to notice is the fact that Juan had an opinion that had many citics, he posted his critics opinions on his blog, he posted his reponses, had a constructive argument and in the end developed a new opinion. What a concept!

Posted by michael on from scotland 10/19 at 11:34 AMHello, Peripheral Persons -
It’s me, “The Fudd.”
Democracy Now is doing a piece on the spread of Avian Flu. According to an expert type guy - it’s real, it,s deadly, and it’s comming this way.
In other news, some pharma company has developed a vaccine or meds which can treat it, but they refuse to license the stuff for inexpensive reproduction and distribution to us wee-wons.
In still other news, Hurricane Wilma (That’s a hurricane with a prominent “W” - just like the Fuhrer) is off the coast of Florida, very near Cuba, it’s a category 5, and they’ve measured barometric pressures at extraordinary lows.Let’s all get together, maybe in Colombia, later this week, for an end of the fucking world party.
PS-
Where do people think 3rd world poverty comes from, in the first place?
As if it just happens to spring up from the earth, like weeds, in places filled with black and brown and yellow and red people…If I was a drug addict, this would be a 3 shot day.
- The Fudd ReportPosted by joe on from Oregon 10/19 at 11:44 AMJOS, you have been on point here lately. Thanks for the wide variety of links.
Michael: Loved the video and will post something in my main post tomorrow. Thanks.
Senor Fudd: How tempted are you to bellow “Willllmaaaaah,” Fred Flinstone-style?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 12:57 PMThanks, Mick.
Joe, that’s exactly where the 3rd world comes from...it just appears, like a rabbit in a magic trick.
and Joe, speaking of Fuhers, say what you want about neo-facism, but at least it’s an ethos.

A store-bought card that pleases me.
Hallmark shall not get another thin dime,
I will give my loved ones home-made rhyme.
I will lock myself in my humble home,
Till I come up with the perfect poem.

Sorry everybody, I could not resist the opportunity.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/19 at 01:29 PM79,000 dead? Talk about “Meanwhile, in Pakistan.”
South Asia and Southeast Asia have lost what? 350,000 to the tsunami and earthquake?
There’s a Pakistani guy in my neighborhood who owns a store and is collecting money, etc. for victims. I’ll try to get more info and post it here.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 01:30 PMAbout the Saddam trial. It is interesting that so little of it will be shown here. The only thing that I can think of when I do see anything about it is, as Jos says, they are ignoring the bigger crimes. It is also interesting that Ramsey Clark is on the Defense Team.////////About Wikipedia, The person who developed it was interviewed on C-span recently.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/19 at 01:34 PMHere’s a small step in the right direction, re: “bigger crimes”:

(more on this tomorrow)Funny poem, RMJ.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 01:36 PMHas the U.S. invaded Syria?
http://tinyurl.com/cfj7cPosted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 02:03 PMThis Commission has great intentions, and lots of big names. Such things will have true power, however, only when there are millions of signatures similar to this:
Fred Smith, plumber, East Orange
Sally Snoid, writer, Soap Opera Digest, Bayonne
Mark Marks, electrician, Schenectady
Billy Ray, dry-wall taper, Atlanta
Lavon Roosevelt, shoeshiner, 34th St....
When ordinary people finally know what’s going on, the whole house of cards will cave in. Till then, we’ll have “nice” elites chasing “evil” elites round and round… Dammit.
Mickey, I’ve been bellowing into the wind, all morning. My calls were recently answered by a sea gull. I’m all cleaned up, though, and back at the computer…
JOS - very agile, great line.
About the disaster in Pakistan. The US government, a compassionate, generous bunch, has dropped a few bucks into their begging bowl, no?
Jesus, we can’t save the whole world. We’ve got Aircraft Carriers to build, and Space-Based Nukes to fund…
Rosemarie, don’t ever apologize, here. Here, you’re home…Posted by joe on from Oregon 10/19 at 02:15 PMMickey, I heard something, yesterday, about some “border skirmishes” within Syria… it sounds like they may be expanding things even beyond that, tho.
What a shock, they’re even more insane than we thought!Posted by joe on from Oregon 10/19 at 02:18 PMHoly shit, Joe, you know Sally Snoid, too?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 02:21 PMDid you know that Saddam is a lot like GWB in that he can’t remember his lines? The differences are that he doesn’t have all of that fancy electronic equipment and he writes his own stuff.:
Posted by JOS on from wdthu.blogspot.com 10/19 at 02:34 PMYeah, Sally Snoid writes all of that great stuff about what happened on General Hospital this week...she’s awesome.
Posted by JOS on from wdthu.blogspot.com 10/19 at 02:37 PMGood morning/afternoon Mickey and all my fellow commenters. Thanks for making me laugh and think Mickey - again! LOVE the T shirt idea and can’t help marvelling at the guy who ate so many donuts while standing on his head high above Manhattan. And the ‘moving picture’ re the ‘love/lust’ quip is priceless!

Posted by JOS on from wdthu.blogspot.com 10/19 at 04:09 PMhomemade cards? that is a great idea i’ll have to try it. purchasing a card is nothing more than selecting the lesser lie. so what do you do, buy a blank card and write the sentiment on the inside or start from scratch? sans felling the trees of course.
the only hitchcock film i’ve seen was
a rope, homosexual murderers, nietzsche’s philosophy, and a dinner party in a cyclorama. it’s based on a play that was inspired by the leopold and loeb murder.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0040746/Posted by tm on from cyclorama 10/19 at 05:39 PMTM: Over the years, we’ve accumulated a batch of thin cardboard folders...so we cut them into a small size, paste an image or quote on the cover, and write something inside. On the back, we paste a little notice explaining why we make our own cards. then we try to re-use an old envelope.
As for Hitchcock, I’d suggest you check out a batch of his flicks: Rear Window, The Birds, North by Northwest, Suspicion, Lifeboat, Psycho… and so on.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 06:35 PMMickey, that’s approximately the Hitchcock list I would have posted - and beginning with Rear Window, as well.
Rear Window really unnerved me, and it was interesting to see “Perry Mason” as the bad guy, as he was in a couple of “Tarzan” movies, some years earlier.
The Birds, though with some fairly lame special effects, was good stuff in its day, and is still a hell of a story.
Hitchcock is usually a solid bet for an interesting film.Posted by joe on from Oregon 10/19 at 08:45 PMPlus, it’s always fun to watch for his cameo, right Joe?
Michele and I saw “Rear Window” at NY’s Film Forum a few years ago. Packed theater. It was amazing.
For those in the NY area, the Film Forum is doing a Hitch retrospective soon:
http://www.filmforum.org/films/hitchcock.html#39Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/19 at 08:48 PMthere’s something I miss about NYC...the Film Forum.
I once skipped out on work for the afternoon to watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for the first time on the silver screen there.
Posted by JOS on from Puerto Rico 10/19 at 09:28 PMAs for Noam on the bookstore issue, yes and no. Here’s a parallel on that, and why I would not be quick to agree.
I won’t support mainstream fast-food joints simply because now and then they make a big deal about having a veggie burger or a new garden salad. Not when my Buddhist friends are running a great little buffet and they aren’t taking a salary half the year just so they can keep offering healthful and delicious food to our region. They have to compete with KFC and McD on each corner. People say, “Why don’t you just offer a few non-vegetarian things, like desserts, so you can get a wider range of customers?” They’ve never given in, and now they’ve been open six years, and they are just getting by. Not in the position to open a second restaurant.
And so I’m supposed to go to BK because it’s the hip thing to support, and it’s better for me to be with the mainstream? I just don’t believe that. I’m more interested in learning how to pull a few people out of that toxic stream.
Perhaps there’s a distinction to be made with a book, for a book is the product of your mind.
