"Stop killing our kids, if you want your own to be safe"
I really like that Nigerian proverb. The pictures on the link were horrifying. A good way to wake up my recently lazy activism urges though.
I hope things go well in Texas. Give your mom a hug from us Expendables.
Posted by Deb on from NoVa 03/08 at 07:48 AMBest of luck on your journey and visit, MZ.
The other sort of globalization means that all kids are our kids, doesn’t it? I’ve lived long enough to know there is no true disconnecting-this is both a blesssing and a sorrow.
Posted by 'soup on from 03/08 at 10:21 AMAbout children...who comforts a young Iraq woman who is pregnant from an American GI raping?
Posted by Joe of Maine on from 03/08 at 01:28 PMMorning all..
Hey joe, no one does, actually she is completely ostracized from her own family as you probably already know.
Here’s something else on GI rapes:

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 03/08 at 02:10 PMTodays Independent carried a story saying that 3 in 4 Liberian women had been raped. Just thought I’d cheer everyone up… Their president is apparently the first elected female head of state in Africa (racking my brains as to why she isn’t just the first female head of state - surely they don’t count Her Queenliness?)
Best wishes to your mum Mickey.Posted by mew on from london 03/08 at 02:28 PMwomen and kids really do have the worst of it in war. When ever I get disgruntled with my own personal situation here at home, I pause for a moment and reflect on what my daily life may be like in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, or any place with such suffering and injustice.
Water is the first concern...having to go out with plastic containers to the nearest well and haul water for washing cooking and drinking. Having to boil that water, making sure there is enough fuel for the generator to get the stove going. Trying to keep the kids clean, how do you wash off the DU? Then there is food to gather. Getting to the market and back in one piece. Where does the money come from if the men are dissapeared? How safe is the food to eat? Have the orchards and fields been wafted in smoke of petrochemical fires or worse? How do you keep the kids happy and active, is it safe to send them to school? Is there anywhere safe for them to play? What about getting them the medical help they may need.....
I have a teenage son who is bored silly and completely uninspired with school and the prospects of ‘work’. How much more so for a child living with daily and nightly insecurity and nightmare of war. What a tragic loss. Many of these wemon and children will grow up with crippling mental and emotional conditions and some with a legacy of cancer and birth defects to pass on to the next generation. All because of the ignorant willfull greed of a few lunatics.
yep, we have it pretty good here. Maybe the best way to help change the situation is to do all we can to make the most of what we do have and ato help those closest to us however we are able.
Maybe its time to stop complaining and get off our asses and do something for our neighbour in need. Even if that something is as small as a smile or a look in the eyes that acknowledges their existance here, in the same space as me, for a brief moment.Posted by frances on from british columbia 03/08 at 04:24 PMGreetings, Expendables, from a truly frigid New England. I just got word today that I’m even more expendable than I thought.
I hadn’t anything to add to today’s post until checking the cast for “Venus,” which I saw last night and recommend. ( http://www.imdb.com is a useful, and thus far free, tool)
When Vanessa Redgrave received her Academy Award for “Julia,” her speech was as follows: Upon accepting her Oscar for “Julia,” 1978: “My dear colleagues, I thank you very very much for this tribute to my work. I think that Jane Fonda and I have done the best work of our lives, and I salute you and I pay tribute to you, and I think you should be very proud that in the last few weeks you have stood firm and you have refused to be intimidated by the threats of a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums [interrupted by boos] whose behavior is an insult to the stature of Jews all over the world and to their great and heroic record of struggle against fascism and oppression. And I pledge to you that I will continue to fight against anti-Semitism and fascism. Thank you.”
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 03/08 at 05:22 PMHello to Deb, soup, Zen and all from a very cold north. Too many good comments here today as usual. Frances, you mention DU. Has everyone here seen the photos of the DU babies? I would like to see those photos put up on billboards all over the usa, with the caption, “Your tax dollars at work”.
Mew, JOS, and Joe...the rules of engagement seem to be to rape the little girls first and then kill them and their families.
I have been very busy with more legal stuff. Now they have lost the video of the protest that led to my arrest. It must be “lost” the same place as the protest sign.
I had a little time with Cindy Sheehan on Sunday. I will send a couple photos to Mickey. Sadly, she has been under attack - some very ugly and personal attacks by pro-war “good americans”. I witnessed a bit of a scuffle. Those pro-war people can be very violent. Sad.
Safe traveling to you, Mickey. Be safe and hug Mom for all of us.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 03/08 at 06:48 PMHello Expendables...from the Lone Star State. I can’t stay long but wanted to say hello, thanks, and welcome to the newest members of our crew.
I’ll try to stop by later…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Dubya Land 03/08 at 09:03 PMI extend hope to you Mr. Z. and family.
Hoping for strength in the face of mortality and human frailty.
Hoping for comfort in an inhuman world.
Hoping for a sparkling light of love to illuminate the darkest hours.
Hoping that the universe will pause and give the beautiful their due.
Hoping that no matter the situation one can take comfort in the often uncertain thought
that we are forever. Here is a beautiful song to extend a bit of hope in all of your Expendable worlds…
“Hold these hearts courageously as we walk into this dark place
Stand, steadfast beside me and see that love is the province of the brave.”“Province” by TV on the Radio with D. Bowie
http://tinyurl.com/2h6b5fPosted by Youngfox on from Adanac 03/08 at 09:23 PMAnd here’s the latest news on uniformed violence against women, this time from the British Police. In the video you see she’s (19 year old) already held down by three guys when about half way through the CCTV footage 4 or 5 huge nasty blows go in.
