The Battle in Seattle (Looking back seven years)
Mickey, I just read your article on Jason Miller’s blog. Thanks for reminding us of the Ralph Nader $10,000 challenge to members of Congress. That explains part of the problem. Another big issue is the common practice of “loading” bills in the Congress with all sorts of irrelevant legislation. That not only sets the stage for bad legislation but it also gives those in Congress who vote for it, deniability..."I had to vote for the bad law because there was something good in the bill.” The article below yours about the death of Empathy is also an important one.
Today I am working on a reply to a Court Order from a State Supreme Court Justice. What do you do when the Court Order says that the State Constitution does NOT matter??????? Seems that there is a lot of that going around these days. Strange times that we are living in !

RMJ, I’d like to know more about the Court Order. My suspicion is that the SC says the Constitution does not matter because its a situation where contractual (admiralty/commercial jurisdiction) law applies, but I’m highly curious.
That reminds me, I highly recommend this video of Michael Badnarik’s (Libertarian presidential candidate) Constitution class. Go to the video page of my website, scroll down to near the bottom, to the “Miscellaneous” section. You’ll see it there (7 part series). Or, search for it at archive.org.

Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 11/02 at 09:17 AMJeremy...Thanks for asking. Here is Article 4 of the State Constitution. I think that it means what it says. It seems clear to me, not only the words but also the intent and spirit of Article 4. The Judge does not agree and says that those without money can be excluded from the Court. I think that if you want to exclude those without money from the Court, then you first have to amend the Constitution.
“Article 4
Every person within this state ought to find a certain remedy, by having recourse to the laws, for all injuries or wrongs which one may receive in person, property or character; every person ought to obtain right and justice, freely, and without being obliged to purchase it; completely and without any denial; promptly and without delay; conformability to the laws.”Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 11/02 at 09:29 AMHello Expendables. Thing started out wet and gloomy here today but the sun is fighting through now.
The comments above made me think of a sign in my local laundromat: “Not responsible for articles lost or damaged.”
Which reminds me...time to do the wash.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/02 at 12:03 PMRMJ, thanks for further details. I’d still like to know more. If you wouldn’t mind, please e-mail me, jrhammond001 at hotmail. I’d like to understand this situation better.
Posted by Jeremy on from Taipei 11/02 at 12:18 PMHi Mickey, just a heads up for you and others here. Norman Finkelstein is asking for support, you can read about it here

Another left prof under attack, this time from people on the left. Shameful, in my opinion.

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/02 at 01:21 PMperhaps I needed to be there but that Seattle fiasco looked like an engineered excuse to declare martial law in an American city. I heard the paramilitary-style anarchists who were breaking windows and such had occupied a local building for the week surrounding the summit which the cops went nowhere near, even when people complained and a guy who had a publishing business there almost had his concern go under because he couldn´t get into the building.
Then during the two days of violence the police were under orders to stand ground and they made not a single arrest of any of the paramilitaries, and as soon as the blackmasks were gone the police moved in an beat daylights out of the peaceful protestors. The same thing happened on a smaller scale in Barcelona last month, there was a protest about the scorched-earth tractics of housing developers in a local plaza. It was going peacefully until these guys came in wearing masks. You can tell from their physiques combined with the way they walk and hustle to organise and breathe in such a stressful, psyched manner that they’re military. Too, these fellas had riot shields and used them to make a large wall from behind which they launched fireworks through a makeshift bazooka at the police. They stirred up the chaos and left without one of them being arrested, the cops moved in to start roughing up the kids. It´s weird to see both sides, cops and protestors alike, getting played like harps.
