I saw a rhino on the uptown #5 train
Hi Mickey...The man goes to prison for stealing 2 dollars...the World Court website does not even give 1 sentence to the crimes committed in the middle east, none of the other international ‘legal bodies’ gives 1 sentence to the slaughter in the middle east...and it’s okay the nice men in boring suits passed a bill on ‘Thought Crimes’, apparently to keep me from typing these words…
Posted by joe of maine on from 11/18 at 10:48 AMI’ll go out on a limb and suppose that race is an allowable topic today.
Jim Crow McCarthyism: What is about to be done to Barry Bonds will actually be the ‘legal lynching’ that the ridiculous Clarence Thomas once complained about. Watching Rich White Guys line up for a piece of Bonds is a few light-years beyond hypocritical. I doubt that in the coming media typhoon anyone will ask why the owners (including George W. Bush) looked the other way for years, sans any penalties that I am aware of. The mea culpa of Jason Giambi also comes to mind: white guy = “What’s done is done. Let’s move on.” black guy with a clue and an independent streak = “Read him his rights.” Of course, we can expect the highest in probing analysis from the Sportswriters of America. As this circus unfolds, baseball just might overtake the IOC and NCAA as ‘most corrupt sports body.’
Other Notes: Does anyone else see the grim zeal in Bud Selig’s eyes? Could we imagine the Giants had an idea about what was coming as they released Bonds? (I realize collusion among owners sounds farfetched...) How strenuous will the otherwise useless Congress’ reaction be? ‘Impeach Bonds’ will definitely be on the table.
This post wouldn’t be complete without noting that elite sports aren’t an appropriate topic for political discussion, except when the Tampa Bay Rays want $450 mil for a new stadium development.
Thanks to Dave Zirin for his priceless sports commentary and witticisms: “Whatever keeps that smile glued to Laura Bush’s face is a performance enhancer.” http://tinyurl.com/2pcftz
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 11/18 at 10:58 AMGood morning joe, Zen, and Mickey.
Jason Miller has an interesting article up on Counterbias. I have been a critic of the book “The Secret” ever since it was published because I believe that it harms many - victims of illness, poverty, etc. Imagine having a horrible disease, and being told that it was your fault because you did not “think” the correct thoughts! Here is a bit of Miller’s article.
“...James Arthur Ray, whose “credentials” include, “…almost going bankrupt, [which] forced him to focus on the life he truly wanted. Now he runs a multimillion-dollar corporation dedicated to teaching people how to create wealth in all areas of their lives,” joined forces with Winfrey to plug The Secret, a book rife with inane mythologies the ruling class loves to perpetuate and the ruled class just eats up.Again, from Oprah’s website:
[According to James, there is scientific evidence to back up the spiritual practices and laws defined in The Secret. “Science tells us that everything is energy, and so your thoughts are energy. Your body, your cash, your car—everything you think is solid, if you put it under a high-powered microscope, it’s just a field of energy and a RATE OF VIBRATION,” he says. “And so are we. So if you think you’re this meat suit running around, you have to think again.”
Posted by RMJ on from Mickey Z 4 Prez Hdqts 11/18 at 11:19 AMLast night I was having dinner with some family members. My 14 year old nephew was in attendance. Good kid, suburban, white and immersed in the Hip Hop culture.
I have absolutely NO problem with this, unlike some of the other people at the table.
I actually enjoy our conversations, wherein I tell him about some of the old school acts.
He even thought Rap originated in Harlem until I set him straight.
Feel free to give the Bronx a shout out.
Any way, he was wearing a tee that I enquired about. Turns out it represents the Barber Shop he frequents.
Imagine that, representing with a tee from your Barber. Gotta love the kids!
Anyway, after telling me that the barbers in the Hip Hop inspired shop are Dominicans, he blurts out that “ Blacks give the worst haircuts.”
HUH?
I told him to “ hold on a sec..... be careful.”
He’s pretty cool and fairly intelligent and sensed where I was going. Thus the conversation ended.
This morning I regaled him about Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s The Message.I thought it fascinating that a white kid would discover HIP HOP, but choose Dominican barbers because he thinks “Blacks” give shitty haircuts.
P.S.
Zen Prole:
You are so right with your take on Bonds.
I agree with you that Zirin is a wondeful alternative to the mainstream Sports Media.
I also believe that Baseball makes a fine bedfellow to Politics.
Income inequality, immigration, labor and racism are all issues that are bubbling beneath the surface in Baseball.Happy Sunday!
Posted by Tommy on from I live by the River 11/18 at 11:41 AMRMJ...3...I agree and it pisses me off when salivating, greedy authors go into an area they don’t undestand or even attempt to...any one writing about laws that govern things in the universe and on this planet, the physics, I doubt, would appear on Ophrah, even if they understood the urgency of it all...there is an ethical understanding among REAL teachers that information is not thrown around as casual chit-chat or is used to sell books...this crap pisses me off as some study groups have disgraced certain information that is worthy of mention to lure the vulnerable...man-made religions have always done this with very minimal receiprocity to those supporting the preaching charlatans!
Posted by joe of maine on from 11/18 at 12:10 PMHello Expendables...from damp, drizzly Astoria. Love the comments above. Instead of trying to join in, as Springsteen once suggested, I’m just gonna stand back and let it all be (for now, at least).
Be back later, my friends.

Posted by joe of maine on from 11/18 at 03:10 PMYes joe, I have known many compassionate people. I wouldn’t still be here if it was not for a little help from my friends. As a culture though, I think we are deficient. I envy some of the cultures that are looked down upon here. As I always say, I would gladly wear a burka, if only…
Posted by RMJ on from Mickey Z 4 Prez Hdqts 11/18 at 03:21 PMI have been receiving more than my fair share of e-mails that say, SUPPORT THE TROOPS. Below is my answer to one of them.
“Some people don’t believe that ANY part of the war machine should be supported. Whose side are you on - the victims of the occupation in a war of aggression, OR those who make war possible by actually doing the fighting? You can’t be anti-war while supporting any part of the war machine. You can’t have it both ways. Either you support the victims of war OR you support those who wage war. You can support one side or neither side, but you can’t support two opposing sides.”

Today the Telegraph UK is reporting on this new weapon system. A couple of years ago I wrote about it. It is only a matter of time before it is used on us.

1809 Sweden surrenders Finland to Russia. The Czar declares Finland an autonomous Grand Duchy with himself as constitutional monarch represented by a governor general
