The Demons of Falluja

  1. I loved your reference to, and observation about, the reluctant parent, MZ.  It is so right on. It is also a good example of my overarching personal belief that propaganda-susceptable adults are often the natural by-products of their upbringing.  An upbringing that often includes shaping the child to believe in the primacy of an external authority (the parent, the teacher, etc.) over the child’s inner one.  Adults that don’t question the legitimacy of the external authority figures in their lives (i.e. the governement) have often been conditioned to think/act that way by parents who enforce the primacy of their authority over the child’s inner one.  “My parent must be right, even if I may not feel he/she is” becomes “my government must be right, even if I may not feel that it is.”

  2. Dead on, NR. Stopping a child from crossing a busy street? Well, that’s a form of authority that’s tough to argue with. But, as you articulate, many other ways that parents, etc. exploit their power simply perpetuate the cycles we are struggling to end.
