The word on East End Avenue

Posted by Mickey Z on 07/23 at 04:31 AM
  1. Good Morning Mickey...I didn’t see the documentary...Born into this...you and I were born into this, Michael Vick was born into this...like bad yeast rising.

Born into this...rejection of ‘this’ can only be expected.

  2. I rented Born Into This when it first hit the DVD circut and then I bought a used copy (probably the one I rented) from the same video store. Quite simply an excellent documentary on a great poet/thinker… There’s also one called The Bukowski Tapes (or something like that) which is filled with interviews, readings and opinions by Bukowski… Definitely worth finding…

  4. Dinosauria, We
    by Charles Bukowski

    Born like this
    Into this
    As the chalk faces smile
    As Mrs. Death laughs
    As the elevators break
    As political landscapes dissolve
As the supermarket bag boy holds a college degree
As the oily fish spit out their oily prey
    As the sun is masked
    We are
    Born like this
    Into this
    Into these carefully mad wars
Into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness
Into bars where people no longer speak to each other
Into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings
    Born into this
Into hospitals which are so expensive that it’s cheaper to die
Into lawyers who charge so much it’s cheaper to plead guilty
Into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed
Into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes
    Born into this
    Walking and living through this
    Dying because of this
    Muted because of this
    Castrated
    Debauched
    Disinherited
    Because of this
    Fooled by this
    Used by this
    Pissed on by this
Made crazy and sick by this
    Made violent
    Made inhuman
    By this
    The heart is blackened
The fingers reach for the throat
    The gun
    The knife
    The bomb
The fingers reach toward an unresponsive god
The fingers reach for the bottle
    The pill
    The powder
We are born into this sorrowful deadliness
We are born into a government 60 years in debt
That soon will be unable to even pay the interest on that debt
    And the banks will burn
    Money will be useless
There will be open and unpunished murder in the streets
It will be guns and roving mobs
    Land will be useless
Food will become a diminishing return
Nuclear power will be taken over by the many
Explosions will continually shake the earth
Radiated robot men will stalk each other
The rich and the chosen will watch from space platforms
Dante’s Inferno will be made to look like a children’s playground
The sun will not be seen and it will always be night
    Trees will die
    All vegetation will die
Radiated men will eat the flesh of radiated men
    The sea will be poisoned
The lakes and rivers will vanish
Rain will be the new gold
The rotting bodies of men and animals will stink in the dark wind
The last few survivors will be overtaken by new and hideous diseases
And the space platforms will be destroyed by attrition
    The petering out of supplies
The natural effect of general decay
And there will be the most beautiful silence never heard
    Born out of that.
    The sun still hidden there
    Awaiting the next chapter.

  5. Small true story. My kid sister, who is significantly younger than I, is probably going to the Olympics in one of the aquatic events. She has a boyfriend...no big deal. Well,a minor big deal as he is about 14 years her senior. My biggest issue with him is his politics: he’s very, very conservative as befits his occupation, another big issue. He works for Homeland Security as a field agent. His condo is decorated with a fine eye. He’s a superb cook. And his house is spotless.

So I was over at their new condo a couple of months ago and what do I see on the bookcase...an entire shelf of Bukowski...go figure. This, from a guy who thinks Fox News is telling the truth.

  6. I’ve also found that Buk can cross bounaries, Ghost. Years ago, I worked at a corporate gym (cue the shame and self-loathing) and I’d often read at the desk while “monitoring” the facility. At least twice, when I was reading Buk, someone commented favorably. Still, I’m afraid, these instances appear to be exceptions to the rule.

  7. Hi everyone. I’m just catching up from last night and want to reply to Alison’s suggestion that Mickey should contact Cockburn. I have not followed the discussion but it seems to me that no one can effectively advocate for himself - no matter what the situation is. Anytime somone argues on his own behalf, his arguement is automatically suspect. That is just the way the world of human relations works. Of course, there are exceptions, but it has been my experience, that an outsider or a third party, or a thousand third parties are more effective than anyone advocating for himself. So therefore, I ask Alison why SHE doesn’t contact others, especially high profile others, and have them join this blog? I have made this suggestion here before. I continue to say that Mickey should be on C-Span, DN, etc. Imagine Mickey on “The Colbert Report”. I don’t see it as Mickey’s job to make that happen. I see it as OUR job to advocate for that by contacting C-span etc.

  8. Who am I to argue? As the saying goes: That lady from Vermont is right.

  9. RMJ 7, Mickey 8, an internet radio talk show could be interesting...it could be a pain in the ass...getting the correct supporters could be a lot of work...computers, mics., etc.

  10. joe...you make a good point. One problem is that there are many people who do not have computers. The digital divide is very noticeable when conversing with those who have and those who have-not. But, I agree that talk radio would be a good venue for Mickey. Hannity would be the ideal opponent. Mickey might be one of the very few who could take him on and get his point made. Until some of us break through the main-stream-barrier, we are pretty much just talking to ourselves.

We saw this coming....Does this mean that the USA is now under martial law? It looks like the government can confiscate the property of anyone who dissents.

  11. I’ll bet my prize pot of blue cascading lobelia that 99% of the so-called anti-war groups, remain silent and fail to give any support to Churchill. The drama is about to begin. Last week David Lane, Attorney for Ward Churchill said, “The real drama starts possibly on Wednesday of next week when we file our First Amendment retaliation lawsuit. We’re no longer in kangaroo court. And the real drama will start in a real court”.

  12. Just in...Update 3:43 EST: Capitol Police arrested Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern,
Rev. Yearwood, David Swanson, and 20 other activists and put them on a
police bus. But all is not grim - Cindy is calling it her “campaign bus.”

  13. Hello everyone, guys and girls and anyone in between. Alison, my friend is impressed with your efforts. She promises to let me know IF she gets paid by C/Punch. She said she’s got a pile of bills and shoes to buy for her daughter. If anyone is listening, send out that payment fast, and I’ll say when it arrives. RMJ- Hi darling. I think A. Cockburn is capable of defending himself. Didn’t he call C.Hitchens a “sack of shit”? Not lost for words there. My bet is he will deny reading this site even if he does read it (and he should be reading a writer who has written for his site). If he says he reads Mickey’s site then he’ll have to answer the issues and questions about writer burn out and pay for book essay writers. I bet he will avoid the whole issue. Easy to act dumb than answer hot issues. I would love to see Mickey on TV. My wife says she’d watch just for the great body and beautiful face. I’m jealous but I can see where I am lacking and Mickey wins. Not hard to see when I look in the mirror. Maybe Mickey can add daily exercise advice. A mind and body site! Stay safe, Bob.

  14. RMJ...8...only the host needs the computer...you can dial into the host or vice versa by telephone, go live on air through host computer. I’m not sure of the details, not hard to find them, probably not too expensive...3 hours an evening, or every other evening. I personally have no inclination toward this, cheaper than buying a radio station. I don’t know where the FCC comes into this if they do...or pirate the whole damn operation.

  15. Hi, all. It’s been a cool stretch in Eastern MA - about 15 degrees cooler than normal (quick, call the global warming police!) but still pleasant.

What’s Wrong With This Picture Dept:
    Charles Bukowski, d. March 9, 1994
    Bill Hicks, d. February 26, 1994
    Bill O’Reilly b. 1949
    Carrot Top b. 1965

I’ve got a short story: I took an evening walk around the duck pond at my apartment complex, and saw a police car stopped on the ring road, talking to someone. As I continue my stroll, the cop departs, pulls up next to me and says “Who are you?”, then seems hurt when I gracefully and gradually tell him where to get off. He retaliates by driving slowly behind me for several minutes, then beeps his horn before departing the scene. The punch line is how some of the Freest Citizens In The World respond to this true story: “He didn’t need to hear that from you.” “Don’t wise off to a cop.” I didn’t bother repeating that I WAS WALKING AROUND A DUCK POND! WHERE I LIVE! I can’t wait to tell them what I say if/when a SWAT team breaks down the door...odds are it won’t be “Can I offer you officers some coffee or fruit juice?” Thhhpppt!

The new Patton Oswalt CD is out (’Werewolves and Lollipops’) and he’s got his act together. The highest compliment that I can pay a comedian is “Bill Hicks would approve.” Oswalt qualifies.

  16. Dinosauria, We
by Charles Bukowski. Hey, thanks for the poetry, prose.  I like Bukowski’s way of communicating.  Sour and acserbic counterpoint to the sickly sweet fluff and puff.
Be happy with your reflection(poem) is right on too.

my reflection would have a ‘vacancy’ sign flashing(like the kind you see outside of motels) only this empty vacant space is sky blue clear cool and inside my head. A big nothingness that makes thinking about and talking about seem pointless in an enjoyable sort of way. Maybe I have (finally!)found the off switch?  Or maybe its the Traumeel..my new homeopathic friend.  Whatever it is it will surely pass, so I might as well enjoy it while it lasts.
questions and answers keep getting swallowed up and disappearing...enjoying the mystery.
