Tick-tick-tick-tick-tick...
“the cancer of time is eating us away. our heroes have killed themselves, or are killing themselves. the hero then, is not time, but timelessness....” - henry miller.
Posted by Kirbie on from NewMexico 08/18 at 09:14 AMMickey, you and I must be on the same wave length today. I was just at a Bukowski site before I came back here.
Hi, Kirbie.
“Time” is an interesting topic. I have often said that there is nothing more valuable than time. A billion dollars and all of the armies on the planet cannot create one second of time.

Lou ReedI’ve got better ones but I have to look them Up later when I have the...time
Posted by Youngfox on from Canaduh 08/18 at 10:12 AMHey, Youngfox...if there is no “time” does that also mean that there is no “space”?
Hi, Luna
Who said, “Life is an unpleasant interruption to an otherwise peaceful nonexistence”?
My captcha word is “answer”. Are there really any answers? Maybe there are only questions that are not really important, if there are no answers.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 08/18 at 10:25 AMSorry to bore you all with another “Mom” story but here goes. When Christine was about 5 years old, she came up to me one day and said that if you had a slow clock you could die. I asked her to explain. She had developed a theory of “time”. She went on to explain that if you had a slow clock, you would be late for work. If you were late for work, you would be fired. If you were fired, you would not have food or shelter. And then you would die.
Like I said, I’m sorry, but I could not resist telling that story at a time when “time” is the topic here.

Always good to see Pink Floyd mentions. It was great to see loads of old Syd features in the English music press, but of course a shame the madcat handed in his dinner plate.
Posted by Chris Wood on from Manchester, which is delightfully wet and indoors 08/18 at 11:39 AMJust read about the movie with Matt Dillon based on Bukowski’s Factotum:

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 08/18 at 12:00 PMThere’s something I’m surprised at there. My neighbour Rick was in America last year & saw Factotum then (he borrowed my DVD of it which I’d just pounced on earlier this year), but now it’s like it’s just getting released. Is this a case of late buzz (or late Buk? Ho ho) & the movie is just getting kudos now?
Posted by Chris Wood on from Manchester, which is delightfully wet and indoors 08/18 at 12:05 PMI noticed that too Chris...I just read about it in the NYT’s yesterday as coming out the in theaters. Weird…
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 08/18 at 12:17 PMIt is much better to be having “time”, than doing “time”.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 08/18 at 12:33 PMi am sure you all have already, but if you manage to tune in to the force of this statement about time then your perspective on things will change
space is not an absolute but depends on the observer’s movement in time, and time is not an absolute - it depends on the observer’s movement in space
its a rough translation of einstein
Posted by michael on from exile 08/18 at 12:50 PMmistake - its not a statement about time, its a statement about life, the universe and everything, but luna beat me to it (see comment number 3)
Posted by michael on from exile 08/18 at 12:52 PMmichael # 13...I believe that you are expressing the Minkowski theory. This is a lot of fun here today for Jackowski...from Bukowski, to Minkowski. Next thing you know, we all will be discussing the String Theory.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 08/18 at 01:00 PMQuotations by Hermann Minkowski
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From henceforth, space by itself, and time by itself, have vanished into the merest shadows and only a kind of blend of the two exists in its own righ The mathematical education of the young physicist [Albert Einstein] was not very solid, which I am in a good position to evaluate since he obtained it from me in Zurich some time ago.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 08/18 at 01:20 PMHello Expendables. Groucho Marx sez: “Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.”
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Dubya Land 08/18 at 01:25 PMnothing wrong with discussing string theory.
hadnt heard of mikowski but just been looking him up. interesting.
the thing i posted was actually someone elses explanation of einstien (with appropiate changes of tenses)

Changes by Phil Ochs
Sit by my side, come as close as the air,
Share in a memory of gray;
And wander in my words, dream about the pictures
That I play of changes.Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall
To brown and to yellow they fade.
And then they have to die, trapped within
the circle time parade of changes.Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind,
Visions of shadows that shine.
‘Til one day I returned and found they were the
Victims of the vines of changes. The world’s spinning madly, it drifts in the dark
Swings through a hollow of haze,
A race around the stars, a journey through
The universe ablaze with changes.Moments of magic will glow in the night
All fears of the forest are gone
But when the morning breaks they’re swept away by
Golden drops of dawn, of changes.Passions will part to a strange melody.
As fires will sometimes burn cold.
Like petals in the wind, we’re puppets to the silver
strings of souls, of changes.Your tears will be trembling, now we’re somewhere else,
One last cup of wine we will pour
And I’ll kiss you one more time, and leave you on
the rolling river shores of changes.Clips from F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise!!!

Have to go now, so I say ‘bye’.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 08/18 at 04:57 PMTime Waits for No One by the Stones has always been a favorite… now how frustrating, to be blocked from commenting while at work, and now off to a Cool-Observer-free weekend as I visit a friend in Philadelphia. Have a great weekend everyone and best wishes to Mickey’s mom again!
