Who's afraid of Friday the 13th?
The thought of Hillary and Newt collaborating on policy leaves me feeling disgusted and disturbed. There are some kinds of obscenity that are intolerable. I know it when I see it, as the judge said.
Posted by Harry on from 05/13 at 06:11 AMHarry...In my view, nothing that Hillary does would surprise me. She is a mainstream Democrat, which makes her views very similar to mainstream Republicans. I gave up on Hillary when she voiced her support of the war. I agree that it is an obsenity...both Parties are intolerable.
Posted by rosemarie jackowski on from 05/13 at 08:51 AMI was a while coming to see the futility of parsing meaning from the dog and pony show, Rosemarie. I eventually became really disturbed when I found myself splitting hairs the same way the “vote for the lesser evil” people do. The managerial style of liberalism Hillary Clinton favors leads to and complements the sadistic security state policies of Gingrich. It’s no wonder they found things in common. I don’t think either of them sees us as really human.
Posted by Harry on from 05/13 at 09:39 AMHarry...I agree completely. The big tragedy is that we, some of us, don’t see us as human either. The proof is all around us...lack of medical care, poverty, homelessness and the big one...the acceptance of the killing that we do in other countries. Maybe when we become truly human, we will loose the ability to kill one another.

I like that.

I was reminded of a documentary scene by your comment about Hilary’s inability to see “us as really human”. It’s called ‘Feed’ and it’s a memorable look at the ‘92 elections. Check out Hilary’s reaction when she runs into a homeless man on the street as she heads for her limo…Posted by sk on from 05/13 at 12:25 PMThis is a great conversatin, guyz…
Rosemarie, I hope it’s NOT that we don’t see each other as human: I hope it’s that we’re just too damned busy and anxious to understand what we’re doing. Even in a very small place, like here in Grants Pass, everyone is hustling and rushing about throughout the day, as if they’re always two days behind schedule. And we ARE always two days behind. We’ve got to see to the almost infinite number of tasks and responsibilities required by the Corporate Reich. I recall reading something by Alexander Berkman, about living in our Western culture. He said, (essentially) that we don’t need twenty types of shampoo, thirty types of toothpaste, hundreds of types of cars and trucks, thousands of fashionable outfits. We don’t need most of what we’ve been taught that we need; therefore, we don’t need to produce most of what we produce. Therefore, we don’t need to work forty hour weeks and 48-week years, for the rest of our lives. We could create all we really need in far less time, with far less effort. And, with such a mindset, we’d be able to more clearly see what we DO need, or ought to try to invent and create, to help human beings live better, healthier, happier lives…
And, I would add here - we’d have time to notice that the guy we just passed on the street appears to be dirt poor and miserable and that we could help. We’d have time to notice that the past few blocks we’ve driven past are filled with sub-standard houses, surrounded by vacant lots filled with garbage and rubble and children who appear malnourished…
Corporate Capitalism creates horrors which, strangely enough, support and nourish the very system that creates the horrors - If we all just work harder and faster, we’ll be able to afford the *whatever it is* that will finally make our lives simpler and easier… Our lives are like a “Loop of Nightmares.”Posted by joe on from grants pass 05/13 at 04:25 PMHappy Friday 13 May to you, Mickey! Keep up the good fight,
HelgaPosted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 05/13 at 05:26 PM“... Therefore, we don’t need to work forty hour weeks and 48-week years, for the rest of our lives....” Joe, you have been hanging out with the wrong people. I know people who work 80 hours a week, 52 weeks a year just to keep food on the table. I do like your “Loop of Nightmares” comment.
Posted by rosemarie jackowski on from in the loop 05/13 at 07:00 PMDidn’t Da Vinchi once say that one day man would realise what a crime it is to kill the other animals with whom we share this planet, what a horror it is to be eating them (I’m extrapolating here as I heard this second hand), Ahead of your time Mickey. Like that piece of Vonnegut, Sitting here in Kathleens Cradle listening to Bob’s indictment of the Masters of War I feel very strongly the power of the word and as spring burgeons into summer my faith and belief is restored and all things are again possible. Renewal is nigh, Peace and love to all my brothers with awakened souls. D
