Will the real Dr. King please stand up?
Very good article, Mickey. I share your thoughts. Most of those speaking at the ceremony were millionaires. I think that Dr. King would have been a bit saddened by the way things went there. I have also been thinking about the whole idea of monuments in general. Seems like a misuse of money when there are so many who are hungry and homeless, BUT I am glad that a campaign to end all building of monuments did not start with this one. Maybe this is one of the few that is justified.
Is this the week end for the protests at The School of Assassins in Georgia?
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 11/16 at 09:05 AMA US marine has been sentenced to 18 months’ jail in a Californian military court over his role in the kidnapping and murder of an Iraqi man in April......In contrast to another news report this morning about a member of the Black Panthers who has been in prison in solitary confinement for 30 YEARS for some alleged offense.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 11/16 at 09:31 AMGood morning Mickey, RMJ and all.
MLK’s remarks are just as relevant today as the day he spoke them, which doesn’t say much for any progress we’ve made, if any.
Excellent article, Mickey, as always.
Posted by Canadian Observer on from 11/16 at 09:33 AMOne of your finest today MZ.
I cannot imagine what King would say today, because that kind of person is impossible today. If he were still alive, he would already be dead.
Posted by Keir on from The Hague (Jackowski election hdqts) 11/16 at 11:03 AMyesterday I heard a Woody Guthrie song saying something like that but with Jesus.
p.s. apropos of not much, yesterday I happened upon a copy of a film from the 50s called Salt of the Earth, about Mexican zinc miners. I haven´t seen it yet but was wondering of it was here I´d heard about it.
Posted by owen on from schmarcelona 11/16 at 11:14 AMp.p.s. I heard King´s relatives are pretty fierce about extracting royalties from people who use his copyrighted speeches. And one of them wants to create some sort of interactive memorial/themepark for him.
Posted by owen on from schmarcelona 11/16 at 11:17 AMEver hear that jibe “If Ghandi were here, he’d smack you in the head”? If MLK were in D.C. for that charade, I could see it.
Norm Solomon’s 1995 article about the “missing” years of King’s life (from ‘64 to ‘68) remains for me a textbook example of well-informed and -written dissent.
It is way too warm in Massachusetts for this time of year. It’s like frickin’ May.
Thhhpppt!
Zen ProlePosted by Zenprole on from Urth 11/16 at 11:19 AMHello Expendables. It’s humid today with heavy rain on the way. That sound right for you, too, Zen?
Thanks for the kind words about this article. It’s the result of an e-mail. A regular reader asked me to write about the MLK ceremony...and I’m glad I did.
Owen: You might have heard about that movie here...but I’m not sure about King’s family except that his son is a vegan.
RMJ: I’m also not sure about the School of Assassins protests.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/16 at 11:22 AMmorning all…
RMJ, two of my cousin’s brought up the school of assassins thing to me a few weeks back...not the protest, but the fact that it exists...they were outraged by what they had found out about it. It is surprising how little is know about it by the general population.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 11/16 at 11:51 AMVery good article indeed, Mickey! And I am going to tell a friend as soon as I have finished this comment.
‘Hi’ to Rosemarie, Canadian Observer, Keir, Owen, Zenprole and JOS.
The weather is ‘going gaga’: after having had some of the coldest November days on record, we are expecting about 84F on Sunday. Try to make sense of that ..
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 11/16 at 02:16 PMHi Helga, Owen, Canadian Observer…
JOS...The School of the Assassins has been well known in other parts of the world. It is just kept secret in this country. You are right, too few here have ever heard of it. I usually refer to it as the USA School for Terrorists. A few years back there was an international outcry and call to close it down, so the Congress changed its name and thought that the whole world would be fooled into thinking that it had been discontinued.ZenProle...where in Massachusetts? I am right across the Mass Vt border. Maybe we are neighbors. If I was more ambitious I could walk to three States from where I live.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 11/16 at 02:57 PMHello again, everyone. Welcome, JOS and Helga.
Helga: I got your postcard today. Thanks...New Zealand must have been awesome.
RMJ: I guess we could say we’re all straddling three states: anxiety, denial, and arousal.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/16 at 03:07 PMMZ, I don’t know what the weather is supposed to do up here, but the grass is still growing and I half expect the trees to sprout leaves. I bought new ice skates last year, and they remain virgin (I won’t skate indoors).
RMJ, I am 15 minutes from the Rhode Island border, and haven’t been to Vermont lately. (I just tried to write something witty about that poser-hack extraordinaire Bernie Sanders. No luck.) At the scareport a few weeks ago, I met an organic farmer from VT headed to a food conference in Italy. We engaged in thoughtcrime while surrendering our constitutional rights.
Re: SOA: Some years ago I was party to a meeting at Harvard with former SOA Kommandant Glenn Widener, who was about to assume the position. He was courteous, intelligent, and a danger to the human race… sort of like Adolf Eichmann. He met with the seven of us alone. I think I was the only non-SOA protest veteran. I spoke last and said, in effect, “Short of full, televised confessions of terror training and heinous violence by SOA graduates, there is ample evidence that the school should be closed. Just what do you require before admitting this is the case?” He immediately changed tone and said “No, the School does not close on my watch.” And some wonder if Derrick Jensen has gone too far in his arguments.
Incidentally, the meeting room was across the hall from Samuel Huntinton’s office.
Ta,

“The MLK You Don’t See On TV” is by Jeff Cohen and Norm Solomon and was their Media Beat column on January 14, 1995.Hey, line of the day for moi! Thanks MZ. I’ll bet W does lines of the day, too.
Posted by Zenprole on from Urth 11/16 at 04:31 PMZenProle...Well we are not quite neighbors but we are kindred spirits. About Bernie, He actually used to be a Socialist. Many years ago my daughter ran his campaign in this part of the state. Since then the Washington elite got to him. It has been very sad to watch the transformation. My socialist friend, Peter, ran against him in the latest election. Peter was arrested for saying “sh#t” during one of the debates. I don’t mind the arrest so much but they did not have to throw him face down on the floor and hand cuff him. Peter is in his 70’s and has been a victim of police brutality a few times in the past. All of this happened at the Vermont Law School where the police should have behaved.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 11/16 at 05:06 PMThe government announces that instead of the word “hunger”, “food insecurity” will be used when referring to those without food. They say that it will be less offensive....
More bad news…
