Posted by Richie on from st cloud / n ft myers, FL 03/11 at 10:07 AMHello Expendables. Thanks, Richie. I do hope our two Moms are getting acquainted.
As for last night, it was a nice turnout, a receptive crowd, and our discussions revealed differences without rancor. All good. I just wish I could do this every night to a new audience.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/11 at 11:11 AMI just voted for Lucy, and I’ve refrained from entering photos of my cats, out of respect for all concerned here. Because if I did, well… pardon my narcissism.
And now about last night-- yes, it was as Mickey wrote in his comment at the end of the last post. The Astorians are a great group, glad I was introduced to them and I might venture across the river for another of their events sometime. Even if not all of them completely agreed with Mickey’s point of view about the elections and things, I didn’t get the sense of there being a single mindless Dem drone in the bunch. Those who commented from more of an ABB mindset at least did so with genuine thought and desire for progressive active change.
That said I also think the evening was successful in encouraging people to take a closer look at the Democrats that they put so much hope into for whatever reasons, and to examine the dichotomy of being against the war-- this war or any war, yet declaring “I support the troops.” And I’d say that everyone at least had the chance to walk away with the understanding that “not supporting the troops” doesn’t mean that you wish them harm, but that every individual must be accountable for their actions and that we refuse to be part of the logical inconsistencies that are part of so many “activists.”
Aside from a couple people respectfully expressing their hesitancy to support 3rd parties, at least under the current electoral system, the question to stands out for me was from one guy who asked basically, so what should we do? Which Mickey gets all the time, and which honestly is a question that still plagues me to no end. And so MZ answered in 2 parts, one that not to discount how much we all already know if we think hard about things, not to underestimate what we’re capable of… then also, how much specifics can he really get into? Unfortunately, any idea for action radical enough to make a real difference would risk us being fitted enough for an orange jumpsuit, so I guess we’ll talk privately later or something… you know I guess this is what made me kinda uncomfortable with a lot of the talk here about Derrick Jensen a few months ago-- he seemed to take this real condescending tone, but unless he’s been up to shit we don’t know about, is there not an irony in how all he does is write books and articles? I dont know, should he be writing from jail like Mumia?
In any case, Mickey did a great job of answering that question as best as any can, and hopefully-- probably-- emails could still be coming in from some people that were affected by his words last night and curious to learn and discuss more.
So yes, I too wish MZ would do this more often and believe he could given some more time and persistence. I mean, at least a night at Bluestockings or some other small venue some time? Like James Todd Smith said, don’t call it a comeback. You’ve been here for years.
There you go, hope that next time it can be recorded somehow. Sorry I didn’t record anything-- my digital camera does do kinda actually crappy video, and I just figured not to bother disrupting the night with taking photos, Michele probably got plenty.
And to any Astorians reading the comments here today-- thanks again so much for hosting and good luck with everything!
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 03/11 at 01:11 PMThanks, James...I like that. “Mama said knock you out” is indeed fitting. And thanks for filling in the details. I appreciate you being there and spreading the word.
Maybe I’ll e-mail Bluestockings today and see if they’d schedule me to talk without having a new political book out (they’ve already agreed to book me this summer for my novel). I could do essentially the same talk and perhaps the Manhattan location would make it more likely to find someone to tape and/or video it.
Anyone else have connections to book me for a talk?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/11 at 01:48 PMSomehow I knew the LLCool J line would work. It’d be too bad if Bluestockings won’t go for you w/o a new book, but I’d hope there’d be *someplace* in NYC to go in the meantime, and man how hard can it be to procure a decent tape recorder of some sort?
And here’s some fun videos regarding the mess with the NYS governor--

I voted!
Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 03/11 at 05:14 PMHi Richie, JOS, James, and all
Thanks for the update, Mickey. I’m sure you were a big hit.
I voted.
Somehow I feel sorry for Gov Spitzer, also his family. BUT, the Press is doing its slimy thing and I wonder why the lack of loyalty in today’s world among his friends. I also wonder about the story behind the story. What are they not telling us. Cheating on a spouse is never OK, but it is a private family matter. They talk about Impeachment for sexual errors, but not for slaughtering many thousands. I also remember that Spitzer was one of the lonely few who stood up for immigrants and wanted them to be allowed to have drivers licenses. I live only 40 miles from Albany so get most of my news from there.
Posted by RMJ on from Ward Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 03/11 at 05:50 PMI know the rush to impeach itelf had roots in corruption, but part of why I have trouble feeling sorry for him-- his last two press conferences:
About Multiple Sclerosis Awareness week:
http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/0310081.htmlAnd the nonsense that has overshadowed it:
http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/0310082.htmlHis arrogance and carelessness not to mention lack of respect for his wife has resulted in it becoming the dominant story out there. The budget dilemma here might be a mess regardless, and things like MS Awareness week might just be a gimmick in any case, but they’d still have a better chance of having the attention they deserve if he’d acted more professionally.
It’s kind of a personal thing for me, hard to get into now.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 03/11 at 06:24 PMSuper great campaign sign, RMJ. As for Eliot Spitzer, he’s fashioned himself a fine crusader’s noose...it’s curtains for him.
It sounded like a fine time in Astoria last night. You’re right, James, that almost anything causing substantive change is Gitmo-bait at this point.
I can’t find Lucy Sunshine on the pet site, MZ. Is there is a link to her photo? She’s a hoot. Some friends have a border collie, and “Throw the ball” gets old after 35 reps.
Can’t We All Just Get Nominated? Dept: Gerry Ferraro race-lashes Obama, says “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position.” He should have come back with “That’s a bunch of Bull Connor” or “The National Guard is still available to prevent me from entering the Convention.” They’re both hacks, and party politics is a joke, but my hatred for the Clintons is overpowering. (no, wait, that sounds wishy-washy...)
