Dances with Walruses
Just got home from a wedding at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island. As a vegan, I typically avoid zoos, aquariums, and the like...but when your wife’s co-worker chooses such a nuptial venue, sometimes you have to bite the bullet.
The fall-like August weather helped and Michele and I love to dance...but seeing those marine animals in small enclosures is heartbreaking. The DJ booth was set up right near the windows to the walrus pool. With 200 guests dancing to loud music, the giant mammals were in an uproar. One particular bull would charge the glass when anyone neared...and this never failed to elicit boisterous laughter from the guests.
Outside, animal flesh was charred on BBQ grills...including salmon. Inside, salmon were on display in a small enclosure.
The happy couple set up a table to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Fund (complete with a bracelet adorned with the Nike swoosh)...to faciliate more cruel and scientifically fraudulent experiments on animals in the name of helping humans who end up with highly preventable diseases.
As we left, Michele and I apologized to an otter for humanity’s behavior...but he seemed justifiably indifferent to our meager gesture.
