Flash (ah-AAH)...and another novel idea from Mudge
A different kind of Storytelling Saturday...
I did what amounts to some “automatic writing” below. On a whim, I banged out what is ostensibly the opener for a bit of short fiction...but it might stand on its own as a piece of flash fiction.
So, as a warm-up for NaNoWriMo, does anyone else wanna try? No rules on topics, style, fiction vs. non-fiction, or anything except word count: 200 words of less.
Here’s mine:
Dan sat on his fire escape, three floors up, listening to the Yanks on a tiny radio and staring at a young woman playing with her dog in the alley across the street. The Yanks were up by two and the woman had short hair like a boy. As far as Dan was concerned, there was no chance she actually was a boy. Not with that body.
Dan laughed to himself. When would he learn to stop with the “no chance” bullshit? He remembers when there was “no chance” Mandela was getting out of prison or the Berlin Wall was coming down or Iron Mike Tyson was getting knocked on his ass by Buster Douglas in Tokyo but all that shit happened...one right after the other some 15 years ago. Each seemed miraculous at the time but no one thinks much about any of it now, do they? The young girl with the short hair yelled at her dog just as Dan felt something warm in his left ear. He reached up to check and was astonished to find blood on his fingers. What now? he thought. What now?
