A good one-liner in Provincetown...and Happy Birthday to Michele

Storytelling Saturday never fails to attract the tourists

Once upon a time...

About three years ago, Michele and I were in P-Town visiting friends when we came across a traffic cop…white male, slight beer belly: at least 70 years old. Inhaling exhaust fumes all day in his uniform, he chose to spice up his dull routine with some snazzy dance steps: Shuffling feet, a spin, a pirouette into a stop signal...all executed with dazzling aplomb.

(Real name: Donald Thomas)

The tourists ate it up...but a gay male couple was watching with practiced indifference. Finally, one turned to the other and said:

“You’d think with all that moving, he’d lose some weight.”

Who else has a story for us?

Another story of sorts…

Despite the big bash at The Quays two weeks ago…

...today is Michele’s actual birthday.

I can still remember that day (October 25, 1989) when Michele walked into the Vertical Club to apply for a job. I was floor manager of the gym at the time and one of the assistant managers, Carl, brought her up to the gym floor desk to meet me. I smiled as I reached across the desk to shake her hand. In that moment—as we touched for the first time—I could never have imagined how significant this fellow human being would become...in every single aspect of my life. While we later admitted there was an instant electricity, what poet could have dreamed where that simple handshake would lead us?

Happy #40, mon cher…

And remember, as Keir said on Thursday:
"We have to meet. We have to talk."
