Kicking ash

(The return of Storytelling Saturday?)

Once upon a time...

My Mom asked to be cremated and have her ashes spread in various locations in NYC (her hometown). Well, the urn arrived last Monday and it really shook me. I walked up the stairs carrying a box that contained all that remains of the body from which I sprang. All that remains of my best friend. All that remains of the person who provided unconditional love and support for nearly 48 years. How can anyone—outside of Keith Richards, perhaps—ever fully comprehend/accept such a reality?

As she always dreamed of doing, my Mom is finally sitting in our living room with us (she never got to see our “new” apartment). My heart feels like it’s been shattered in a million pieces but somehow, I find a tiny bit of comfort in having her here beside me.

This is an experience I’ll never forget…

Shunryu Suzuki sez: “You will always exist in the universe in one form or another.”

February 20 would’ve been her 72nd birthday. I’m thinking that might be a good day to spread the ashes.

The End
