Aliens, vegans, Paul Harvey, and some words from a King
As promised, I saw a bargain matinee of “War of the Worlds” yesterday. The cliches were groan-inducing, Tom Cruise was Tom Cruise, and the sappy ending could cause cavities...but this was the “Saving Private Ryan"/"Jaws"/"Duel" Spielberg in action and that made for a violent, often sadistic, two-hour escape from reality.
The fingerprints of 9/11 were everywhere...but I found it perversely fascinating to watch arrogant humans in a complete panic. Humanity had no answers. In fact, the nightmare ends with zero help from mankind.
My favorite line came when Tim Robbins (as a basement-dwelling survivalist) roared something like this: “They’re occupiers. Occupations never work.”
(Side note: The first coming attraction was for a yet another remake of “King Kong.” As sacrilegious as this may sound to film nuts, it looked really good. It’s due out in December.)
Anyone else see “War of the Worlds”?

Life-changing book recommendation:
Pamela Rice has turned her infamous “101 Reason Why I’m a Vegetarian” in a book and the result is THE great convincer. You want animal rights? Environmentalism? Health issues? Endnotes? Pamela delivers the goods.
I’ll review the book at length soon. For now, please visit:

Stephen King says:
“The trust of the innocent is the liar’s most useful tool.”
(and that explains today’s Live 8 shows, I guess)
