Henry Kissinger assumes the missionary position
(Sorry, can’t show you that)
(Last week, I told you why I hate America. You can add Dr. Kissinger to that list.)
With a total population of 26 million, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without their own country and have often been used as geo-political pawns. For example, in the midst of a 1975 border dispute between Iraq and Iran, Henry Kissinger secretly channeled $16 million in military aid to Iraqi Kurds.
The Kurds believed that Washington was finally supporting their right to self-determination when, in reality, the U.S. was using them to sap the resources of the Iraqi regime and coerce them into a settlement with Washington ally, the Shah. That settlement came at the 1975 OPEC summit, at which time the U.S. promised Iraq that its support for the Kurds would be immediately withdrawn. As Iraq ruthlessly wiped out the now-unprotected Kurd rebels, Kurdish leader Mustafa Barzani sent a message to Kissinger: “Our movement and people are being destroyed in an unbelievable way, with silence from everyone. We feel, your Excellency, that the United States has a moral and political responsibility towards our people, who have committed themselves to your country’s policy.” Kissinger did not reply to Barzani but told a staff member: “Promise them anything, give them what they get, and #### them if they can’t take a joke.”
Henry later explained: “Covert action should not be confused with missionary work.”
More classic lines from Henry the K:
*"With proper tactics, nuclear war need not be as destructive as it appears.”
*"Oil is much too important a commodity to be left in the hands of the Arabs.”
*"I hope they kill each other… too bad they both can’t lose.” (commenting on the Iran-Iraq war)
*"The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves…I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist because of the irresponsibility of its own people.”
P.S. Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.
